Introduction & Special Thank You
divider.png
"A culmination of departed spirits create a flow beneath the earth where they are ferried into the beyond. The stillness and quiet of the current hides it's fury for the living. Life isn't welcome here, and there is a price to pay for your intrusion."
Welcome to the River!

The River was my 2nd ever suggestion and alternate. It is based on the rivers of the Underworld in Greek Mythology. At the time of creating this suggestion, I didn't really know how to sprite much at all. So to compensate, a great deal of the sprites I used were recolors, splices, or existing sprites with minor alterations. Since then, I have created many more alternates and have improved both my skill at formatting and at spriting. Because of this, however, The River fell behind in terms of quality. And there it sat...

But to my surprise, many of you did not hold this against The River. And to this day, it remains one of the most liked suggestions I have ever proposed. It was clear to me that with the advent of 1.3 and the great support you have shown for the alternate; The River was due for an update to bring it in line. That day is here! Much of the sprites have been updated to better reflect my original vision for The River and it has been further brought in line with Greek Mythology. I hope everyone enjoys the changes, I tried to keep as much as possible true to the spirit that is the suggestion so many of you have come to love.

Sincerely, thank you so much for the support! Enjoy!

Disclaimer

***** Please Read Before Posting *****
This is a suggestion. And as such does not assume anything definitively. This means...

Balance is a non-issue; the numbers are provided to elicit an idea of what values an object could have. If the not-set-in-stone-imaginary numbers upset you, you're welcome to suggest other numbers, but they have no bearing on the suggestion changed or not.

Sprites are a non-issue; sprites have been provided, like balance, to help imagine the suggestion as a concept. In no way are any of the sprites final. Just like the numbers, they too are not-set-in-stone-imaginary things. This means that recolored, spliced, and unique sprites have no ultimate bearing on the suggestion. If any particular sprite upsets you, you are welcome to provide one of your own to remedy the not-actually-an-issue so that I may reject it.

This is an alternate. This means that The River can spawn in a world instead of The Underworld. It does not replace The Underworld. As an alternate, The River additionally does not mirror the values or gameplay of The Underworld in a 1:1 ratio. It is it's own biome, not a recolor or reskin. The River is also NOT an expansion. There is no additional content. Content included in The River is a counterpart or replacement of existing content given to The Underworld.

Lastly; as an alternate (and not an expansion or replacement), The River does not assume to redefine class balance. I'm sorry if your favorite class isn't represented well in the suggestion. If The Underworld represented all classes equally, so too would The River.

Addendum:
1. I am currently not interested in converting my suggestions into mods. Thank you for the consideration, but I'll have to pass.
2. If you wish to use my unique sprites, you MUST ask for permission first.

The Three-Eyed Ravens of the River are exceptionally intelligent. It is rumored that not only are all the ravens' vision linked, but that their third eyes serve another master.

Three-Eyed Ravens cause Blackout with their attacks and are very fast.
ABe6KGo.png

So many souls flow through the River that sometimes even the Aether comes to life in the form of a slime. The River Slimes are an adhesion of multiple souls all vying to be free of their otherworldly prison.

When a River Slime is killed, it splits into 2 smaller slimes. When those slimes are killed, they again split into 2 more slimes each.
gEofF56.png

At night, if you can even tell in the depths of the River, Funeral Pyres appear. The pyres are enchanted to ward off the living, but who constructs the pyres that guide and honor the dead?

Funeral Pyres will launch a drifting flame at the player. The flame can go through blocks and inflict Mortality.
BcTB2dY.png

One of the major horrors of the River are the River Basilisks. They are vicious serpents that feed on bone, dust, and rock. Making matters worse, the River Basilisks seem utterly immune to the affects of the River.

River Basilisks can swim quickly through Aether, but move slowly on land. They will attempt to bite the player, but will periodically cast a petrifying gaze that inflicts Stoned just like Medusa. River Basilisks can not use the gaze while swimming
z3X0IyB.png
xeJX1lA.png

The River is full of the dead. Some are cursed to wander about for eternity... unable to afford passage into the next stage of death. While others wait to pay for the journey. Regardless of their situation in death, the dead's envy of the living will cause them to attempt to snatch it from anything with a pulse.

The dead hover about and attempt to make contact with the player. They can inflict Darkness with their attacks.
CPG4syE.png

The ghastly Orb Weavers are thread spinners of the greatest caliber. They are exclusively seen in the River where they construct massive nests of threaded web. They can live for centuries and are notorious for knowing when anything living has entered their domain

Orb Weavers fire a strand of webbing at the player; if hit, the player becomes Webbed while the Orb Weaver is drawn to the player via the strand. When the Orb Weaver arrives, the player is slowed and at the mercy of the Orb Weaver's melee attacks. The webbing inflicts damage and can pass through blocks. The Orb Weaver can pass through blocks while it is drawing itself to the player.
2RulftA.png

The mysterious Fates are a rare sight in the River. They never directly engage anything, but they thrum with power. They wear cloaks over their bodies and never show themselves; but their shape clearly denotes that the Fates are not human.

Fates are rare. When they appear, enemy spawn rate is increased, and enemy stats are doubled; including movement and attack speeds. The Fate's mere presence inflicts Blackout on the player regardless of immunity. The Fate has the Temporal Field buff, which creates a time distortion bubble around it -- which will inflict Mortality on players who enter the bubble.

Bullets fired by the Cerberus explode on impact, dealing their damage in a small area. The explosions can harm the player. Cerberus has a 1% chance to cause triple damage.
GSUR0Je.png

The Eurytus turns Wooden Arrows into homing souls. Kills made by the souls will restore a tiny amount of health to the player or allies.
NLaJafd.png

The Obol is a chakram weapon who's damage increases based on the amount of money the player has on them. So long as the player has 10 copper, the Obol deals 20 damage. 10 silver, 30 damage. 2 gold, 40 damage. 1 platinum, 45 damage.

The Memento Mori fires a small flame in the direction of the cursor. The flame will inflict damage and cause Mortality to enemies it hits.

The Akujiki is a manually swinging sword that grows in power as kills are accumulated. When 5 enemies are killed, the sword turns blue, it's damage increases to 50, and the player receives the Yin buff. The Yin buff lasts 5 seconds, but every kill refreshes the timer. If the player kills another 5 enemies, the sword turns purple and it's damage increases to 60. If the player kills another 5 enemies, the sword turns red and it's damage is increased to 70. At any time if the Yin buff timer expires, the sword returns to normal (40 damage) and the process must be started over.

The Ferryman is the caretaker of the River. By his will, or for a cost, he damns or guides the dead. Coin is not the only thing the Ferryman collects though. Should he meet one of the living, it his duty to see them ferried to the current of the River -- by force if necessary.

The Ferryman is the Wall of Flesh alternate. He spans most of the screen vertically and traps the player in the River until he or the player dies while slowly advancing on them. The Ferryman has several attacks. He will fire ghostly "Guides" at the player from the Aether cloud he rides on. His lantern will fire spirit bolts at the player. And lastly, the Ferryman himself will quickly rush forward to ram the player, before resuming his regular position of advancing.

In Expert Mode, more Guides are fired and the Ferryman advances more quickly. The spirit bolts from the lantern will inflict Mortality.

Fires a wind slash that grows as it travels and pierces enemies dealing damage and heavy knockback. At the end of it's travel length, the slash explodes, dealing damage to enemies in a medium sized area. Iron Crushing Fang is not auto-swing.
rfLAGto.gif

Fires three cards that home in on the closest enemy. On impact, the cards explode causing damage to everything but the player in a small area. The cards strike and explode individually. There is a 20% chance that the Fates will cost 0 mana and launch 5 cards instead of 3.
mxb8Ipi.png

Fires 4 projectiles at the cost of 1 bullet. It has a 20% chance not to consume ammo. The Death Penalty allows bullets to explode, but the explosions can harm the player. It has a 1% chance to instantly kill non-boss, non-pillar enemies.

The River
an alternate underworld

kdcROYP.png

Introduction
divider.png
OK! It's here! It's finally here! I knew full biome suggestions were a lot of work, but boy did I underestimate it. I will probably stick to mini-biomes for a while after this. Please don't judge me too harshly on the sprite work. As per usual, I had to splice and alter a lot of existing sprites to get my results -- however -- a few of them were made from scratch.

The River is based on "Styx", the underworld river of Greek mythology. The current version of The Underworld is grounded in 1 conception of an underworld (Hell), so I thought I'd try my hand at another conception. The River is bleak and shares a uniform color theme. When The River spawns; ruined houses are smaller and spawn on small "islands" of Dust, though are more stocked than normal. There is more Aether in The River biome than there is Lava in The Underworld biome. Lastly, The River is darker than The Underworld, and Planctae Lamps are spawned on Dust at varying intervals.

Having The River spawn as your underworld replaces a lot of environmental features -- most notably, Obsidian and Lava, which are replaced by Planctae and Aether.

Planctae Bricks are a variation of Blue Dungeon Brick, but with lower saturation and a lean toward a mint hue. The Planctae Brick Walls share the same changes, but are derived from Green Slab Wall.

Enemies in The River are generally slower in reaction to the player -- their range of aggression is reduced. To compensate though, the enemies are tougher in most cases.

River Slime, when killed, splits into two River Slime (B). When River Slime (B) is killed, it splits into two River Slime (C). It functions similarly to Mother Slime.

Wanderer's don't seek out players until the player gets close, similar to mimics. Wanderer's cast three slow-moving soul bolts at the player every time they attack.

The Wayward behaves like a mid range attacker. It spews Aether at the player inflicting the Mortality debuff, similar to Ichor Stickers. Unlike other spiders, The Wayward cannot climb walls. To compensate, The Wayward is very fast moving.

The Strayed behave like Wanderer's, once they've spotted a player they then behave like Chaos Elementals. They have their own Temporal Field buff (though smaller than a player's would be), and will try to stay in melee range of the player -- teleporting to them if they can not reach them.

Book of Souls fires 3 spirit bolts in a spread. After being fired, the spirit bolts home in on their closest enemy NOT the closest enemy to the player. Projectiles can not pass through walls.

Book of the Dead is the improved version of Book of Souls. It fires 5 bolts instead of three and the projectiles will now bounce.

Kusanagi is a directional weapon similar to a spear (even though it appears as a sword). When swung, the weapon behaves like a spear that causes it's damage instantly to all enemies in a line. The particle effect would be a single pink energy line that appears when the sword is used and vanishes almost as quickly.

Shadow Shuriken behaves almost identically to Magic Weapon.

Funerary Memento is a boomerang weapon with two stacks. It can bounce and has a chance to restore mana on hit.

Death Penalty acts like an early game rocket launcher, allowing the bullets it uses to explode. The explosions caused by the bullets do not harm the player.

Mana: The Gathering and the Pac-Man ghosts? You've outdone yourself with the paintings. There should be a reference to Oddeysseus (I butchered the spelling, didn't I) and his journey to the underworld. Or maybe Sisphyus pushing the rock?

Edit: Scratch that, reference the band Styx.

I dropped jaw on the table, I have not seen such beauty, post made very good, and sprites too, most amazing suggestion ever, keep up a good work!
I'm going just stare at this, bloody amazing!
Sprites are amazing! Design of thread is amazing! Idea is focking AMAZING!
Thank you! It took forever to get everything together -- and took a long while to format and post too! %:sigh:

Wonderful idea! It's a super creative alternative to the Underworld!
Noticed a lovely little Binding of Isaac reference in there as well.

Aside from the sprites, which you've already stated you're still trying to get better at, I think my main criticism would be that many of your items and enemies function a little too similarly to items and enemies that already exist in Terraria. That may just be my personal preference though, so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

It's by design. I have some radically oddball ideas for the game, but suggestions within existing mechanics are not only easy to understand, but (hopefully) easy to implement should any part of the suggestion actually be picked up. So I don't try to reinvent the wheel so to speak.
