Sprites Bringing the Hallow to the Forefront of Early Hardmode

652Graystripe

Plantera
As it stands, the Hallow and Corruption seem to be intended opposites to each other. That's certainly justified, given their motifs and imagery. However, one will find that the Hallow plays a much, much smaller role in Terraria's progression than its evil counterpart, be it Corruption or Crimson.

As the Hallow's entrance to the game marks the single largest change Terraria's world ever experiences, that being Hardmode's beginning, it seems that the biome itself could use a little bit of spicing up.

Currently, each of the biomes have their "claim to fame." For example, the jungle is the gateway to late-game progression, while the Corruption is the first real challenge the player faces and allows them to obtain more important loot such as Molten Armor and, indirectly, the hardmode ores. The hallow, meanwhile, provides a decent amount of loot in the earliest days of Hardmode.

Sound inadequate? It sure does to me, especially since its evil twin over there gets a whole boss devoted to it. If you're gonna add spreading biomes to your game that work as opposites, at least make them equally important.

This is a fairly large project I'm working with here, so bear with me. Before I get into the meat of the suggestion, I'd like to present my ideology and the structure of this project:

652Graystripe said:
Effectively, the Hallow is turned into the Corruption/Crimson's equal in this suggestion. This doesn't mean a new boss and it doesn't mean any drastic gating. Since the world is thrown wide open in Hardmode, with many different options open, it seems fitting that the Hallow should represent a major portion of early Hardmode while still not being a guaranteed first priority to the player.

Furthermore, it brings in the easy-to-visualize concepts about the spread of both the Hallow and its given counterpart. In effect, the Hallow is important for the player who wishes to control the two biomes rather than let them take over.

-The Jungle is now safeguarded from both Hallow and Crimson/Corruption spread. This was first brought up (I believe) by @MegaMage314 in this thread and still holds true today.

My reasoning? Though an experienced player might have worked their hands to the bone trying to protect the Jungle - and, disturbingly, may have failed - a beginning player doesn't understand Terraria's progression. To them, it's very open-ended with little direction; thus, they run the risk of having a very important biome destroyed without knowledge of the implications on any closing of their playthrough.

-One Floating Island is always chosen to become Hallowed at the beginning of Hardmode.

Corruptor

Crimslime.png

Crimslime
-Explodes into 1-2 ichorous projectiles when killed that create a tile of Crimson where they land
--Projectiles can be destroyed and move very slowly.

The reason for both of these monsters' changes is that spread will be much, much easier to block with the rest of this suggestion.

Nice work, some of this stuff looks really cool! I agree, the hallow does seem pretty empty compared to the corruption and crimson.

If they work all the way down to hell, they should be a fair bit more expensive. Maybe 3 dynamites and 30 purification powders.

I feel like this recipe could be improved. Maybe a gold or platinum bar, one star, and one crystal could be used instead? The bars should AT LEAST be held back from being craftable early on by something other than an anvil.

Anyways, I like most of these suggestions. Support.

Amended the crafting recipes - Sunsteel Bars were supposed to be at mythril anvils or greater, and I tweaked it to include souls of light to incorporate the Hallow. The recipe for the Stasis Sparkler has been changed.

Also, it's a rolled-up thing like a sroller.

I think the pastel blocks are a bit unbalanced - too expensive to build with, and they don't do anything special. Maybe 50 stone in the recipe for 50 blocks. Remember that gastropods only spawn at night, and I for one wouldn't go hunting for them at night early in HM when I don't know what to expect.
I have a few usage ideas too:
* They could be able to contain taints (purple pastel block, pink pastel block, red pastel block, and the regular ones). Taints would spread onto them, and spread through them quickly, but wouldn't spread out from them. Any monster from that biome could spawn on them (even fish if there's enough water) and they will compliment ice or sand if its close enough (giving tainted sand sharks, mummies, and maybe rainbow slimes a chance to spawn). However, they would only work on the surface layer, making it necessary to explore the underground for most items. Could be used well with the clentamination blocker. Probably lower the crafting to 30 stone for 30 blocks.
* As a more aesthetic-oriented use, maybe they could take multiple paint coats, and you would be able to get most of that paint back when the block is broken. Ex. blue+yellow paint = green block, + more blue = teal. the color would only show when the block is placed, so every color wouldn't need a name. They would meld with any other block (or maybe have a hammer setting to chose) and have straight edges and soft corners. (this sounds fun to sprite. might do it if I remember :p) and also walls.

Sorry if this seems messy. I love the Hallow ideas, and I agree that it needs more attention than it gets :)

Maybe some of the easymode bars should be taken out of the Sunsteel bars, or combine Early hardmode bars (cobalt / Mythril) with some hallow bars to really force it into hardmode.
