Terraria: Otherworld This is the End: Otherworld Development Cancelled

Shame to see this go, I was hyped for it ever since it was revealed way back in February 2015. I also remember watching the OST preview. I swear, those songs were breathtaking and haunting. The least you guys could do is at least release the soundtrack. That would make up for it 100%.

Thanks for letting us know guys. I still really enjoy the original game and can't wait to see what you have in store for us in 1.3.6!
Good luck with any future projects, you guys are the best!

It wasn't early. It looked awesome. My main complaint has been lack of transparency and communication. Long periods of silence.

But I love getting excited about games. I love Terraria and enjoy following announcements. I'm ok that they canceled it because they didn't like it. What I don't like is that we had to wait so long with no word for it to be canceled. Their fix is just to keep everything secret from now on it seems.
I used to. But honestly, I’ve been burned by hype so many times now that it’s safer to assume everything is going to suck and/or fail.

That way, when it doesn’t, I get to be pleasantly surprised.

Could we at least get the awesome amazing art that we've seen in the Otherworld videos/screenshots/etc eventually implemented as an optional texture pack for Terraria (since @Loki specified that they still own the art)?

Terraria is awesome, I'm not sure we needed another Terraria... but what WOULD be beyond awesome, is an updated texture pack. It would give the whole game a fresh coat of paint and would make it so much better.

The news of OW not panning out is kinda sad, but yet I kinda figured this would happen. What I REALLY wanted to see were those art assets. Not so much the game itself, but more just the art assets. I would love it if we could get that for good ole Terraria that we've been playing for years.

Now don't get me wrong: the current assets for Terraria aren't bad or anything, but yet, the OW stuff looked amazing. But yet, that's just my opinion and that's why it should be an optional official texture pack.

I am very sad about what happened with the game I am surprised as well, but ya know what they say.

You know what would be great? If for the texture pack they also added the music from OW to replace the normal terraria ones. Or atleast release the soundtrack as standalone.

If it were made optional, sure. More options are always awesome.

Good Day, Terrarians-

We wanted to take a few moments to share some important news with you all in regards to the status of Terraria: Otherworld.

As you all know from when we first announced the game a long while ago – and as we repeated in our subsequent posts - Re-Logic’s focus has and always will be on delivering complete and quality game experiences to our fanbase. Just to underscore it once more, this means that we will not compromise game quality for speed to market or for any other reasons within our control. Our team has a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, in spite of all of our efforts, the current state of the game remains equal parts far from that vision and beyond behind schedule from our initial planning when we shared Otherworld with all of you three years ago. Progress has absolutely been made during that time – but unfortunately, a very thorough status review of the game versus its intended design showed both the Re-Logic and 505/Pipeworks teams that things were quite a bit further away from the finish line than we had imagined. Taking the massive amount of work that would be remaining to complete along with the extensive time it would take to get that done, and how that would greatly interfere with the pursuit of other projects on behalf of Re-Logic – it becomes clear that this leaves things in a very undesirable state.

As a result, we have made the decision to terminate development of Terraria: Otherworld.

We sincerely thank both of our external development teams for their hard work on the game, but at some point, we have to be honest with ourselves and realize that Otherworld simply is never going to reach its potential in any sort of reasonable time or fashion.

We know that the cancellation of Terraria: Otherworld will not be happy news to anyone. It is FAR from a happy moment for us either, when we look at all the time/effort/resources that we poured into the project. However, we feel strongly that we owe it to our community and loyal customers to uphold the standards that both you and we expect and to focus on delivering the best possible games that we can for you all to play. Come whatever may, quality is simply not something we are willing to compromise on to make a quick buck. It may be painful in the short term, but our sincere hope is that it will pay off for everyone in the long term in regard to our future games. T:OW will never come to pass, but its lessons learned and ideas generated will absolutely yield dividends for everyone.

So, what now? Next Steps for Re-Logic & Lessons Learned

  • In hindsight, it goes without saying that we never should have spoken publicly about this game as early-on as we did. We will fully own that error in judgement. Moving forward, we will be far more judicious about only sharing information on projects in which we are fully confident in regards to timing, etc. We can only apologize for all of the emotional rollercoaster this caused.

  • Trying to outsource development of such a critical title for our company – even if just in part – was not the way to go. Moving ahead, our focus for the core development of new/future titles will be more inward and will seek to utilize our own people. We will share more information there just as soon as we have it.

  • Re-Logic has possession of the game (design, code, art, sounds, etc.) as it exists today, and there are still a ton of amazing ideas under the hood here – many of which have never been publicly shared. These are ideas that we have not and will not forget and that you will very likely see implemented in our future titles.

  • Active development of Terraria continues - 1.3.6 is still very much in active development. We know that we have not shared a lot in the way of spoilers there – but rest assured that the team has been working tirelessly on our next PC wave.

  • This keeps our partners at 505/Pipeworks wholly focused on Console/Mobile/Switch – and there is still a TON to get done there, so that should be good.

Thanks so much to you all for your amazing support of Terraria, Terraria: Otherworld, and our company. It is that support that drives us every day to do amazing things for you and we look forward to sharing more of what is to come very soon.

We are sure that you have a ton of questions, and we will answer what we can – but we will not delve into some areas out of either respect or confidence or the unknown. So we will ask your patience and forgiveness in advance there. Thanks!
Aw man that's real kick in the pants....

Its worth pointing out that most of the art from T:OW is not compatible with Terraria in a "direct exchange" sort of way. The character models and sprites followed an entirely different animation system. I'm not even sure you could deliberately adapt most of the art to the Terraria resolution and format.

This is now my home.....

Well... This.... Hurts...

The good point. Now they have ideas for 1.3.6
But. For now... I will relax. With a.... Idk...
That image was not appropriate for this situation or this forum, and has been removed. Please do not post anything like that again.

We understand that people may be upset about this news, but after all it's just a video game that didn't make it.

Shout-out to all the people who were saying the game is doing fine, it's not in dev hell, etc. etc. You guys nailed it.

What pisses me even more about this is not that the project got cancelled. But because they continued to neglect for 3 years that the project is fine. On twitter and everywhere they were putting hope in fans that is fine and its in development and news will come soon. Maybe you should have stopped lying to your fans in the first place, or maybe stop lying yourselves. At this point there is no way to have trust inbeetween since you straight up were telling fans that all its good for YEARS. Really dissapointed by this news. But even more dissapointed in how it was handled. I won't be ever able to say anymore that i will be hyped for anything Terraria related in the future. Because we got bamboozled for 3 years straight and now out of nowhere cancelled.

Literally 3 months ago ? "Anyone won't be able to shut us up" ? seriously ? If the game was in that kind of state why even give statements like this ?

Also Terraria is 7 Years old game, yes the updates are cool and stuff, but for how long, there is a community here mostly because of the mods, i doubt anyone gets hyped for getting 5 new items added in a new update. Also you guys shouldn't have expected to make a better game than Terraria. Because Terraria took 7 years to get to this state. You can't just replicate that in 2 years. But that's just my 2 cents.

I politely ask everyone to please don't misunderstand my following words.
I wonder what took you guys so long, Terraria 1 Has a lot of potential, i love this game, every since i bought it in 2016 i've been waiting for new content, new biomes, perhaps even new bosses.
I've been hearing about TOW for about 3 years now, you guys could've used this time to improve Terraria 1 a lot, as you said in the OP, you guys knew since the beggining that TOW was nothing more than a dream..
Just leave TOW archives somewhere safe, for a future try, and focus on Terraria 1.. Improve this upcoming 1.3.6 updated that will add only a few more minutes and then doom the game to "rot" on our desktops for 3 more years till you release some other "15 minutes update".
With this said, i feel very sad for your time wasted and your crushed dreams.. RIP T:OW.

Oh yes, 1.3.0, 1.3.1, and 1.3.4 added 5 new items, each. Definitely.

You guys realize that most of Re-Logic WAS working on Terraria "1" right? Redigit was doing most of the work on T:OW, and then 505, and then Pipeworks, but still, most of Re-Logic was working on Terraria.

Terraria 1.3.0 was released 3 years ago, almost all recent updates are not significant at all to the game. Only thing worth mentioning inbetween all this is the Tower Defense mode and the Desert update. Rest of it its either hotfixes,UI changes and stuff like that. Even the next update promises Creative, like if we didn't have that already with mods. Yes it will be cool , but that will be it. nothing more nothing less
