Here's the idea: When the player is in possession of a Flamethrower-type weapon (including the Elf Melter) the Arms Dealer will sell Empty Fuel Canisters for 5 copper apiece. These can be used to craft a variety of different Flamethrower ammunition types to break the monotony of just using Gel to shoot burny stuff. (Speaking of which, Scarecrow has made a suggestion for newer and stronger Flamethrowers. I strongly suggest you check it out.)

Unless otherwise noted, Flamethrower ammo does not work underwater.

Does the Canister gets used up after using this or is it Obtainable after using it?
 
I think that if the Flamethrower was to be given this much attention with ammunition, the weapons themselves should be more useful and spread out in the game. As of right now, the Flamethrower is inferior to the Megashark. And the Elf melter is just...bad.

What could be done is we could add in a flamethrower in Pre-Hardmode, similar to how the Boomstick (of the Shotgun bunch) came into the game. At the same time, we could buff the Flamethrower and Elf Melter a bit, enough to make their Area-of-Effect devastating but still be lacking in single-target DPS (which is what the Megashark + Crystal Bullet combo conquers).

But if that were to happen, some of these ammunition recipes (including the empty canister) would have to be available pre-HM too.

I'm not sure about the ones that aren't flames, just clouds of stuff. But I definitely support more ammo types for the flame thrower.

Crafting: 25 canisters and 1 Lihzahrd Power Cell. Gives 25.
Damage: 7
Range: very long
Inflicts Electrified debuff.
Range doubles underwater.

As a player who uses Flamethrower/Elf Melter as my number 1 weapon, I highly support this.
Also, I think my suggestion item Rainbow Gel can work with this. Perhaps it shoots a rainbow?
 
I have a suggestion for another canister which is :

compressed air
Damage:0
* 4 block range
* can reflect any projectiles except bullets and lasers
*adds a TF2 reference
Bought from steampunker for 1 g - 10 g

EDIT* can not auto fire with this, and can only stack to 10-99
 
It's a great suggestion, like all of yours, but Party Canisters should do at least as much damage as Nanite Canisters, because it's like that for Bullets as well.

Confetti Canisters have longer range than the Nanite Canister, and 1 point is a pretty minimal difference. :p
