Hell Alternate: The Brimstone Underworld

Fire and Brimstone; the Biblical symbols of the wrath of God upon the damned. This is what inspired me to make an Underworld alternate that focuses around sulfur and acid, darkness and torment, versus the existing Underworld which is themed almost exclusively around fire. You are about to delve into a horrific and twisted alternate to the infernal pits of Hell. Brace yourself, and enjoy the ride.

Environment

This Underworld would be composed much like Hell is know: an ashy wasteland occupied by structures and dotted with special ore-like stone. Hell towers will still spawn as they ordinarily do, populating the inner circles of the Underworld. However, you will not find lava in these caustic depths. Instead, you will encounter vast amounts of Acidic Water, which you'll need to become familiar with before proceeding. It is a nasty green substance which behaves exactly like Water, except dealing damage on contact and inflicting the Acid Debuff.
The Acid Debuff would be a middle ground between Ichor and Cursed Flames Debuffs, which means (using the the existing mechanics) it would deal 2 damage per second and reduce defense by 10. However, I don't like either of those effects for one reason or another. If my proposed Change to Ichor and Changes for DoT Debuffs were added into the game, it would increase damage taken by 5%, do 5 DPS to enemies, and do 3 DPS to players.
Acidic Water as a part of liquid merging it would simply behave like this:
- Any Water that dribbles down from above will be converted instantly into Acid. (Water becomes Acidic while in this area.)
- Acid coming into contact with Lava forms Obsidian.
- Acid coming into contact with Honey eliminates the Honey.
It is important to note that Lava will still be present deep underground on worlds with this Underworld alternate. Just not in the Hell layer.

And now for the second part of this suggestion...

Gateway Boss: The Wall of Death
All sprites brought to you be the magnificent Zoomo. (Please click here and like his post!)

The Wall of Flesh is a terrifying creature, no one will deny that, but this caustic wasteland is no place for it. It is at home in Hell, which is alive with burning flames, monstrous demons, and a ghastly red atmosphere which it can blend into comfortably. In contrast, the dark, ominous, and sickly green of this nightmarish Underworld are more suited to a new, ghastlier creature.

Enter the Wall of Death. This is the monstrosity which would guard worlds with this Underworld alternate. Instead of eyes and a mouth which are reminiscent of the EoC, it has a skull and arms like a convoluted Skeletron. It would also rival the WoF in that it would be themed around the Corruption's rotten flesh over the Crimson's living flesh.

Wall of Death
"You have made a grave mistake."

index.php

Summoned by throwing a guide voodoo doll into acid in the Underworld.

The Wall of Death is infested by many smaller creatures. These 'Infestoids' stand in the place of the WoF's hungry and Leaches and are knocked off of the wall by hitting them. Unlike the hungry however, Infestoids are not easily removed from the wall. Upon killing one, it's head will fall off and form into its own monster, as either a digger or a fighter. The bad part though is that while the heads can be chopped off, the buds of the hives cannot be killed, instead sharing the health of the wall. after a while, a severed bud will form a new Infestoid, and the player will once again have to kill it.

If those are not enough to deal with on their own, there is the skull and hands as well, and they are not to be underestimated.

The Skull will stay facing forward, inactive for periods of time. But don't forget about it, because it will occasionally extend out on a long neck to head butt the player before returning to it's standard position. The Skull's other attack consists of it opening it's mouth, revealing another Infestoid in it's gaping maw, which would proceed to barf a spray of acid projectiles at the player, dealing damage and occasionally applying the acid debuff. The spray would consist of a large amount of projectiles of various sized (similar to Monstro's spit from 'the Binding of Isaac' for those familiar).

Now for the arms.
The Wall of Death has two arms which function as a combination of Skeletron's arms and Plantera's hooks. They will reach out and grab onto blocks, as if they are pulling the wall forward. Unlike Plantera's hooks however, they are made up from four sections -base, upper arm, forearm, and hand) rather than a chain and hook.

The Wall of Death will be a challenge, though it will be well worth the effort. With some cool new weapons as well. But before that, here are the stats.

The Skull
index.php

Max Life: 8200 (shared)
Defence: 0
Melee: 60
Ranged: 20-40 (depending on health)
Stays attached to the wall, ever facing dead ahead without waver. A picture is worth a thousand words, so both attacks have been illustrated here:

index.php

It's first attack consists of ramming forward at the player on a long chainlike neck, once it reaches the end of it's neck it will then retract back into it's position in the wall.

index.php

The Skull will also spit a spray of acidic projectiles when the player gets too close, similarly to Binding of Isaac's Monstro (example).

index.php

The Tongue
New sprite when snared by the Wall of Death instead of the Wall of Flesh.

The Arms
index.php

Max Life: 8200 (Shared)
Defense: 18
Contact Damage: 30
* The two arms will simply reach forward, grab onto terrain, and pull the wall forward. They will tend to grab blocks near the player, so watch out.

Infestoid Hive
index.php
index.php

Health: 200
Defense: 10-40
Contact Damage: 25-80
* The Infestoid hives act differently from a hungry. Instead of extending and retracting on their vine, the Infestoids will instead be attached to their base by their chain as if it is a tether, they will float freely of it unless they pull too tightly. (For anyone who has seen a chain chomp, Infestoids would act much like that.) Their stats vary based on the Wall of Death's remaining health at the time they were spawned.
index.php

* Upon dying, their severed heads will drop and transform into one of two secondary forms. See details below.

Horrified.png

Horrified
New tip when caused by the Wall of Death instead of the Wall of Flesh.
"You have made a grave mistake. There is no escape."

Monsters:

Infestoid (Digger)
index.php

Health: 85
Defense: 4
Damage: 22
* Spawns and expands to its full length after a severed head makes contact with the ground.
Drops:
Heart.png
Heart - 50% (1/2) when the player is damaged.

Infestoid (Spitter)
index.php
index.php
index.php

Health: 75
Defense: 6
Contact Damage: 28
Spit Damage: 22
* After materializing, it will follow a behavior similar to the Caster AI, except leaping in an arc to each new location instead of teleporting.
Drops:
Heart.png
Heart - 50% (1/2) when the player is damaged.

Drops:
index.php
The Bulwark
index.php
Elvish Strongbow
index.php
Sunder Sword
These three weapons would replace the Breaker Blade, Clockwork Assault Rifle, and Laser Rifle, respectively.
(Emblems and item drop rates are not mentioned here because of a supposed change to the WoF loot table in 1.3)

index.php
Altar Crusher - 100% (Always)
Replacement to the Pwnhammer. See Milt69466's linked thread for details.

index.php
Healing Potions (5-15) - 100% (Always)
index.php
Wall of Death Trophy - 10% (1/10)
index.php
Wall of Death Mask - 14.3% (1/7)

Weapons:

index.php

Elvish Strongbow
* Ranged bow weapon. Uses arrows for ammo.
* Hold attack to increase power and greatly increase critical strike chance.
"Remnant of an ancient race."
Damage: 24-60
Use Time: 15+ (Up to 4 uses/second)
Knockback: 2-5
Velocity: 8-12
Critical Strike Chance: Up to +45%
* Takes one second to charge up to full power.

index.php
index.php

The Bulwark
* Melee flail-type ball and chain.
* A big-as-hell flail to take the place of a big-as-hell sword.
Damage: 42
Use Time: 44 (Very Slow)
Knockback: 7
* Obviously a lot more cumbersome than your ordinary flail. Bigger, and a bit more sluggish as well.

index.php
index.php

Sunder Sword
* Unique Magic weapon.
* Summons blade shards which orbit the player once before being flung towards the cursor.
"A blade fractured by strange magic."
Damage: 20
Use Time: 12 (5 uses/second)
Knockback: 1
* Hold attack to use, release attack to send all orbiting blades outward in a wide spread.
- Blades take two seconds to orbit, so the maximum number orbiting at once is 10 without modifiers.

:sigh: That was a lot of work... hopefully it was worth it. Feedback is appreciated, so leave comments!

Didn't you already make a suggestion like this?

Looks interesting, I'll read through more carefully when I have the time and am not lazy.

I think your images broke again though.

Usually I'm not a huge fan of alternates, but I know you well enough to know that this will not disappoint. But just wondering, have you come up with a casual nickname for the biome yet? I was about to say "inb4 Post-Mech ???? Expansion" when I realized that there's no four-letter word that would obviously take the place of "hell" (besides "dong" of course). I've already decided in my mind that the Post-Mech Hell Expansion should already be a thing, so I'm a little curious on whether you'd do something similar here (though I know it's loads of work!).

Not much else to say other than bravo!

Haha, I see that Arch Ghouls have 666 HP! And Grimes drop Acid Slime banners.. (oops?)

I'd say it should have its own name but.. Underworld seems to work perfectly, hmm. Not that it matters in-game as much, but it'd be easier to refer to this biome with something else rather than "Sz's alt hell." Anyway, can't wait for your post-mech hell additions!

Oh, is there a Dark Lance alternate? Most of the content seems to be green and black, so it's a little monotone. Maybe toss in a little yellow in some items? To keep with the sulfuric theme.

I noticed your Ether potion. It seems too powerful to me, as it does what obsidianskin does plus immunity from all damage. Which means a player can drink them throughout the rest of most of the game, mining cobalt/palladium to adamantite/titanium safely, as well as chlorophyte. As boring as an obsidianskin potion clone sounds, it'd probably be the best way to go.

The images do not work. Please fix. Also, I think it is odd that Everybody can see them, but not me, Milt, and LoM2.

Will fix sprites when I can... they were transferred from a private Social Group where I was working on the WIP pre-release version before posting the final version here. Don't worry, they're worth waiting for, so just sit tight for a bit!

Yes, I will be continuing this into post-Mech Expansion territory eventually.

Anyways, I just call this "the Underworld" while I call the vanilla "Hell."

Dark Lance fits in with the Corruption/Crimson theme better than it does with Fire/Brimstone. (Rooting for Zoomo's Immortal Vengeance.)

:( You're probably right.

I'm just throwing this idea out there, but maybe during the Ethereal state, moving around and using items could result in constant loss of health. Maybe? And when the user reaches 1 health, the buff ends? It's a really cool concept and I want it to work.

Can't wait for the Post-Mech expansion. I loved the Hell one.
Good work, as usual, and it's a very fitting alt.
I take it the Acidic Water would take up the 4th liquid slot? Just wondering, because that would lead to an imbalanced amount of liquid between the alternate Underworlds.

Brimstone biome? I want a Brimstone Blaster, and it shoots a red beam (Blood laser barrage). and i hope you get the game reference. :D
but seriously, i like the idea! +1

If all else fails just make it so lava cannot be put in the world. It has been proven that different biomes lava can look different and inflict different debuffs.

I've composed a few ideas for the Cross-Class Armors thread, after the post-mech expansion has been released, since we already have Acid Armor.
  • Since Glacial Bars have been deconfirmed, Frost Armor will require Hallowed Bars for now.
  • Toxic Armor has now become a Melee/Magic armor, crafted with Brimstone, Souls of Sight, and Poison Essence, now dropped by the Infernal Dragon counterpart.
  • Infernal Armor is crafted with Souls of Sight, to make it a direct alt.
  • The new Ranged/Magic armor is Wounding Armor, crafted with evil biome bars, Souls of Fright, and Blood Droplets (dropped from Arapaima, 2%)
  • Wounding Armor has makes Ranged and Magic attacks inflict Bleeding.
