Biomes & Nature [Sprites] The Depths: An Alternate Underworld

Snickerbobble

The Painter
Hello everyone! Time for my next big biome suggestion. This took weeks of effort so I hope you enjoy it. If you find that there is too much to read, there are plenty of sprites you can glance over instead. I present to you:

EN3DjBW.png

This alternate Underworld is found in the deepest caves of certain worlds, and is themed around shadows and geology. A land of pure darkness, with crystals lining the walls, makes this cavernous wasteland of times long forgotten a beautiful, yet terrifying place. Creatures of the dark and earth roam here, eager to track down outsiders to grow their cthonic cult, lead by the sinister sorceress, Chasme.

iatsVqV.png

A brave warrior with new equipment takes on the creatures of the deep. Glistening quartz clusters form from the moist shale and dips in the terrain collect water and quicksilver. Water turns a dark blue and drips from the ceiling when it rains thousands of feet above.

XucahlP.png

This is just a preview shot, but quartz castles and arquerite apartments are found within the middle third of the map, with long century-old stalactites that hang from the ceiling. In the outer thirds, petrified trees can be found with gems spread out among all the shale.

Legend

According to legend, a little over a thousand years ago, Chasme, the Shadow Child, was born during a total solar eclipse. Those born during an eclipse were believed to be evil and full of complete darkness. Her mother, a grand sorceress, gave her an enchanted heart pendant necklace to help repel the evil energy within her daughter, but that would only last so long. With each passing year, Chasme grew more and more powerful.

When the day the heart pendant lost its effect, Chasme unleashed her shadow fury! She set half the town ablaze in her sinister shadowflame spells, giggling maniacally. Before she could destroy the whole village, she fell for a trap where she was locked up inside a small silver chest, locked with a holy key enchanted by the town's council of grand casters.

As it was a witch who couldn't be burned, it was left deep underground in its chest, leaving it to never see the light of day again, to ensure it wouldn't terrorize the surface anymore. But eventually the chest couldn't contain the Thing's wicked power any longer as it seeped within the underground, transforming the cavern into a horrifying abyss of pitch darkness.

It's said that those who wander into the Depths will face Chasme's wrath, and never be seen again...

...but that's just some miner's myth, probably to scare young children from playing within the caves.

As you place the Ruby Relic
2QXzBxF.png
within the Gemforge
vv01JQ1.png
, you feel as if something is wrong. The Cthonic Cult seizes attack and those who can chant begin to. They speak in an unknown language.

Thud... thud... thud...
Rumble rumble rumble...

You hear the earth trembling around you... (the screen begins to shake)

The building feels as it's about to crumble apart so you make your way out, standing upon it. It's suddenly quiet.

Drip.. drip.. drip..

...is all you can hear, the water dripping down from the stalactites. You look around, and are the only one seemingly present. All the creatures are hiding.

And then...

You hear the most horrific sound. The noise of tearing metal echoes through the caves with a loud boom of thunder. It becomes much darker... (the screen fades to black)

Then you turn around..

You see a spirit of a little girl. She appears to be made of purple flame, and she looks quite angry, yet has tears rolling down her cheeks. Before you can say anything, you feel a looming presence and glance up at a shadowstone giant.

Two green emerald eyes nearly blind you. It's the monster!

"GET OUT!" they both shriek as the shadowstone giant lunges forward, with the spirit being pulled into the giant's heart.

Chasme has awoken!

12.5%, Warrior Emblem 12.5%, Ranger Emblem 12.5%, Sorcerer Emblem 12.5%, Summoner Emblem 12.5%, any gem 50%, Healing Potions 5-15 100%, Shadow Chasme Mask
mREGcd0.png
7.15%, Chasme Soul Mask
6s7nn0g.png
7.15%, Chasme Trophy 10%
Info: It's Chasme! And its conjured up shadowstone giant. It will talk in a distorted voice like the Lunatic Cultist during battle, though it's equally distorted that you might not understand if not for this post's translation! It has a yellow gem instead of a purple one if facing to the right. In Expert, it'll have four arms, each able to fire Emerald Energy and Ruby Rays from the palms.

"You're not supposed to be here!"
RUN! It's going to get you!

Chasme is a multi-segmented boss with regenerating parts, but all that truly matters is the damage done to the beast's diamond heart. When it reaches 0 HP, the monster is defeated, however the player cannot attack its heart right away.

"This is my home now!"
What does it mean? The monster needs to die!

isO0tao.png

To expose its heart, the player must first damage the head enough. With the head damaged, the emerald eyes crack, causing the Thing's attacks to lose accuracy. Its soul emerges from the heart to fling shadow spheres when it's exposed. The monster will tend to keep an arm near the soul to protect it.

"Get away!"
Hunt it down! Wait.. why is it fleeing?

After 20 seconds, or if 1,500 damage has been inflicted, it crams its wicked heart back into its vile self as the head revives back to full health. It becomes invincible for 3 seconds, and the cycle repeats.

With its head active, it'll fire Emerald Energy shots, that are bigger but slower laser shots.

"They said I had to stay here!"
Because it's evil!

Chasme's arms can be defeated, but like its head, it will revive over time. If the player would normally die from an arm, it instead latches on and swallows the player whole, sealing them within the shadowstone giant to bury the player alive just as the monster was! (We could use some special deaths.)

"Stop it.. AND JUST LET ME GO!"
It.. wants you gone? She.. it.. the Thing can't be let free!

You're so terrified, but you're not the only one. Using your magic mirror will kill you. A glowing barrier can be seen on the edge of the Cavern layer, but it won't hold you back, allowing for a safe exit to end the battle. The barrier only effects someone else.

"Stop.."
...what?

When its head's health is below 50%, her eyes turn red and begin firing more harmful Ruby Rays. When these touch blocks, it creates a Ruby Wave that starts off slow and speeds up, like a mix of a Blazing Wheel and Demon Scythe.

"I didn't mean to.."
The monster's real! ..But was the legend accurate?

Chasme's Soul will shoot shadow flamelash-like projectiles with high accuracy. Dodge at the last second!

"It was an accident.. I didn't do anything..."
It just needs to die! Why is it crying?

It sheds Quicksilver tears at 25% max diamond heart health. The beast's speed and power increase.

"I don't want to die..."
Wait! Stop! Don't kill her!

Chasme's shadowstone giant's skin cracks and blows up. Her soul gives the most horrified scream as it melts before quickly evaporating. Her heart pendant falls and shatters, unleashing the ancient powers of light and dark from within it. A circle of Shadow Bricks
YO57B4T.png
form to carry her drops.

...It's too late...

Steam Achievement
Heart Breaker: Break Chasme's heart.

Special death messages:
[Player] was devoured by Chasme.
[Player] went down the hatch.
[Player] hit the spot.

Chasme Soul

1000th post (and 1,001st)! This project took quite awhile to finish so I hope all of you enjoyed it. There are a few missing things, mostly fish and furniture items, which I may get to eventually, but if you think anything else should be different, I'm open to criticism, and appreciate the help!

Special Thanks:
@AntithesisEK for help with some names, and giving feedback pre-post

@CraftedNightmare Here!, @stormconure, and @ZemmySix for more pre-post feedback

And others for showing interest! I started this project 11 days ago.. of last year. I didn't get far with the Frozen Hell concept (and became greatly unmotivated due to there being a snow biome), but a few weeks ago this new geology and shadow theme change kept me going!

  • Shadow Chasme has two arms instead of four now. When her eyes are shattered, her attacks have less accuracy
  • In expert, she'll have four arms, with less accuracy lost when eyes are shattered
  • Her hands will fire Emerald Energy and Ruby Rays in expert
  • When her heart and soul are exposed at half health or less, she'll begin to retreat
  • At 10% or less health, she'll retreat with or without heart exposed
  • Unlike the Wall of Flesh, she'll turn around if you pass by her. Though she'll snatch onto you if you invade her personal space for too long!
  • Buffed some of Chasme's stats and attacks
  • Changed some of the narration of the Thing

Thanks for reading! I'll try to keep this thread updated, so feel free to check back later.

XucahlP.png

This is just a preview shot, but quartz castles and arquerite appartments are found within the middle third of the map, with long century-old stalagmites that hang from the ceiling. In the outer thirds, petrified trees can be found with gems spread out amongst all the shale.

Legend

According to legend, about a thousand years ago, Chasme was born from an unloving Dark Sorceress. When only a few years old, she was deserted in the deep woods. She was found by some villagers in the morning and was taken in, enjoying her knew home, until she was found using dark magic when playing with the other kids. She chased kids with four grown arms with shadows dancing around her, and set a slime farm on fire with shadow flames. It was decided she was devilspawn, but no one wanted to burn a kid, so they did the next worst thing: locked her in a small box with a magic relic, sealing her evil within. The box was taken down deep within the world and tossed into a silver pool, which instantly froze into an ore too strong for any tools of the time to break. About a thousand years later, the stone began to crack. Those who go too deep are never found again.

...but that's just some miner's myth.

It starts slow, but starts picking up at about 1:04 and 1:30.

As you place the Ruby Relic
RyhkGKE.png
within the Gemforge
DX0IcLh.png
, you feel as if something is wrong. The Cthonic Cult seizes attack and those who can chant begin to. They speak in an unknown language, but all you can make out is...

"Chasme, Chasme, Chasme!"
"Chasme, Chasme, CHASME!"

Thud... thud... thud...

You hear the earth trembling around you...

The building feels as it's about to crumble apart so you make your way out, standing upon it. It's suddenly quiet.

Drip.. drip... drip..

...is all you can hear, the water dripping down from the stalagmites. You look around, and are the only one seemingly present. All the creatures are hiding.

And then...

You hear the most horrific sound. The noise of tearing metal echo through the caves with a loud boom of thunder.

Then you turn around..

You see the Guide. "...help..." he whimpers, as his skin turns a pale white, as if all life was drained from him. You feel a looming presence and glance up.

Two green emerald eyes nearly blind you. It was her!

"GET OUT!" she shrieks, and lunges forward!

Chasme has awoken!

Info: It's Chasme! She will talk in battle through purple text messages the first time, with later battles only with a second Ruby Relic
RyhkGKE.png
equipped as an accessory. She has a yellow gem instead of a purple one if facing to the right.

"You're not supposed to be here!"

Chasme is a multi-segmented boss with regenerating parts, but all that truly matters is the damage done to her diamond heart. When it reaches 0 HP, she's defeated, however the player cannot attack her heart right away.

"This is my home now!"

To expose her heart, they must first damage her head enough. With her heart exposed, her head slouches and she shifts direction, floating away from the player, using half her arms to cup it for protection as the others swing at the player.

"Get away!"

After 20 seconds, or if 1,500 damage has been inflicted, she crams her heart back into herself and her head revives back to full health. She becomes invincible for 3 seconds, and the cycle repeats.

With her head active, she'll fire Emerald Energy shots, that are bigger but slower laser shots.

"They said I could stay here!"

Chasme's four arms can be defeated, but like her head, will revive over time. If the player would normally die from being attacked by an arm, she instead latches on and swallows the player whole! (We could use some special deaths.)

"I mean it, LEAVE!"

You're so terrified, but you're not the only one. Using your magic mirror will kill you. A glowing barrier can be seen on the edge of the Cavern layer, but it won't hold you back, allowing for a safe exit to end the battle. The barrier only effects someone else.

"I'm not evil!"

xr0Va9w.png
When her head's health is below 50%, her eyes turn red and begin firing more harmful Ruby Rays. When these touch blocks, it creates a Ruby Wave that starts off slow and speeds up, like a mix of a Blazing Wheel and Demon Scythe.

"I didn't mean to.."

The possessed Guide will shoot shadow balls that bounce around like Flower of Fire.

"I didn't..."

SqEEd3Q.png
She sheds Quicksilver tears at 25% max diamond heart health. Her speed and power increase.

"...do anything..."

Chasme's skin cracks and blows up, leaving behind a circle of Shadow Bricks
tRk9nsb.png
of her drops. Shortly after her defeat, the hardmode entering text shows up. She releases the spirits of light and dark.

Steam Achievement (since we're getting these)
Heart Breaker: Break Chasme's heart.

Special death messages:
[Player] was devoured by Chasme.
[Player] went down the hatch.
[Player] hit the spot.

Due to image restrictions, the rest of the Depths suggestion is in the post below.
YASSS FINALLY :)

Head HP: 800, Arm: 200, Heart: 7,500

The Head and the Arms should have more HP; they'll be killed in a few seconds. I say raise it to 3,000 and 700 (respectively for each arm) and maybe nerf the heart HP to 4,500. AND make it so that the heart can only be damaged after the arms are dead/the head is dead? Oh, and good job.

Another snicker bobble thread? YES! I caught this baby early on! Cant wait to read it!

OFFICIAL REFLECTION : I've always loved crystals, minerals, and all that stuff. This idea really sparked that up! I love the creative weapons such as the white lightning, palladium shield. Your sprites are absolutely amazing, showing no signs of simple resprites or anything! Everything seems transcribed from some sort of creative essence, and your ideas don't seem to overlap with just about anyone else's. I stayed up late the night before finals just so I could finish reading this! Keep up the amazing work!
