Snickerbobble
The Painter
Hello everyone! Time for my next big biome suggestion. This took weeks of effort so I hope you enjoy it. If you find that there is too much to read, there are plenty of sprites you can glance over instead. I present to you:
This alternate Underworld is found in the deepest caves of certain worlds, and is themed around shadows and geology. A land of pure darkness, with crystals lining the walls, makes this cavernous wasteland of times long forgotten a beautiful, yet terrifying place. Creatures of the dark and earth roam here, eager to track down outsiders to grow their cthonic cult, lead by the sinister sorceress, Chasme.
A brave warrior with new equipment takes on the creatures of the deep. Glistening quartz clusters form from the moist shale and dips in the terrain collect water and quicksilver. Water turns a dark blue and drips from the ceiling when it rains thousands of feet above.
This is just a preview shot, but quartz castles and arquerite apartments are found within the middle third of the map, with long century-old stalactites that hang from the ceiling. In the outer thirds, petrified trees can be found with gems spread out among all the shale.
Legend
According to legend, a little over a thousand years ago, Chasme, the Shadow Child, was born during a total solar eclipse. Those born during an eclipse were believed to be evil and full of complete darkness. Her mother, a grand sorceress, gave her an enchanted heart pendant necklace to help repel the evil energy within her daughter, but that would only last so long. With each passing year, Chasme grew more and more powerful.
When the day the heart pendant lost its effect, Chasme unleashed her shadow fury! She set half the town ablaze in her sinister shadowflame spells, giggling maniacally. Before she could destroy the whole village, she fell for a trap where she was locked up inside a small silver chest, locked with a holy key enchanted by the town's council of grand casters.
As it was a witch who couldn't be burned, it was left deep underground in its chest, leaving it to never see the light of day again, to ensure it wouldn't terrorize the surface anymore. But eventually the chest couldn't contain the Thing's wicked power any longer as it seeped within the underground, transforming the cavern into a horrifying abyss of pitch darkness.
It's said that those who wander into the Depths will face Chasme's wrath, and never be seen again...
...but that's just some miner's myth, probably to scare young children from playing within the caves.
Quicksilver
Tool: Empty Bucket
Info: Liquid mercury. You can resist it for 2 seconds before taking an increasing DoT mercury poisoning debuff. The deeper you sink, the slower you become, but if you come in contact with the liquid for a brief moment, you will gain a speed buff for 30 seconds.
Collisions: If Quicksilver touches Water, it forms Quartz
. If Quicksilver touches Lava, it forms Stone. If Quicksilver touches Honey, it forms Glitter Blocks
.
Shale Block
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: Finely grained sedimentary rock that makes up most of the Depths.
Shalestone Block
Tool: Nightmare Pickaxe+
Info: Denser blocks of shale scattered throughout the Depths, which can generate with gems within. In hardmode, Onyx will generate in some Shalestone.
Petrified Tree
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: The oldest trees transformed into stone. Unlike any other tree, these require a pickaxe to break. They appear naturally in the outer two thirds of the Depths, but can be grown from a planted Acorn in Shale Blocks anywhere. Inspired by @SzGamer227's Ashwood Trees suggestion!
Petrified Wood
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: Old stone blocks for building and furniture uses, that can also be crafted into gear equivalent to Pearlwood's power.
Quartz Block
Tool: Nightmare Pickaxe+
Info: Decorative minerals that grow off of Shale Blocks. Also formed when Water comes into contact with Quicksilver, except in the Depths, where the two liquids become more Quicksilver.
Geodes
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: Uncommon items dropped by Geomancers, can be placed on shelves for a collection.
Arquerite Ore
Tool: Nightmare Pickaxe+
Info: A precious alloy of silver and mercury. It gives mercury poisoning after a couple seconds of contact, and drops half a tile of Quicksilver upon mining in the Depths.
Shale Brick
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: A pebbly block for decoration. It's made of 2 Shale Blocks, or a Shale Block and a Stone Block.
Quartz Pillar
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+

Geo Torch
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+, or Right Click
Info: Torches found within the ruined buildings in the Depths, emitting a faint purple glow.
Glitter Block
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: A pretty but messy block! Forms when Quicksilver touches Honey.

to unleash Chasme.
HARDMODE
Shadow Brick
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: A dark block. A circle of Shadow Bricks are generated when Chasme is defeated, holding her drops.
Living Fog
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: These are friendly foggy blocks that are occasionally dropped by defeated enemies in the Depths after Chasme is defeated. They appear semi-transparent (GIFs can only be solid or not, sorry), and if possible, able to have their own layer to have foggy scenes in front of background objects.
Diamond Dust
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+
Info: Dropped by the Crystal King and can be placed as a gravity-effected background block, like Coins.
Ember
Tool: Copper Pickaxe+

As you place the Ruby Relic
within the Gemforge
, you feel as if something is wrong. The Cthonic Cult seizes attack and those who can chant begin to. They speak in an unknown language.
Thud... thud... thud...
Rumble rumble rumble...
You hear the earth trembling around you... (the screen begins to shake)
The building feels as it's about to crumble apart so you make your way out, standing upon it. It's suddenly quiet.
Drip.. drip.. drip..
...is all you can hear, the water dripping down from the stalactites. You look around, and are the only one seemingly present. All the creatures are hiding.
And then...
You hear the most horrific sound. The noise of tearing metal echoes through the caves with a loud boom of thunder. It becomes much darker... (the screen fades to black)
Then you turn around..
You see a spirit of a little girl. She appears to be made of purple flame, and she looks quite angry, yet has tears rolling down her cheeks. Before you can say anything, you feel a looming presence and glance up at a shadowstone giant.
Two green emerald eyes nearly blind you. It's the monster!
"GET OUT!" they both shriek as the shadowstone giant lunges forward, with the spirit being pulled into the giant's heart.
Chasme has awoken!
Note: incomplete sprite, will finish eventually!
Chasme
Head HP: 2500, Arm: 350, Heart: 5,500
Head Defense: 18, Arm: 14, Heart: 30
Head Damage: 40, Emerald Energy: 55, Ruby Ray: 70, Arm: 35, Soul: 50, Shadowflame: 42 (all damage gradually increase to 1.5 times more damage the weaker the heart gets)
Drops: POW Hammer
100%, Shade Blade
12.5%, Quartz Cannon
12.5%, Shadow Claw
12.5%, Staff of a Thousand Years
12.5%, Warrior Emblem 12.5%, Ranger Emblem 12.5%, Sorcerer Emblem 12.5%, Summoner Emblem 12.5%, any gem 50%, Healing Potions 5-15 100%, Shadow Chasme Mask
7.15%, Chasme Soul Mask
7.15%, Chasme Trophy 10%
Info: It's Chasme! And its conjured up shadowstone giant. It will talk in a distorted voice like the Lunatic Cultist during battle, though it's equally distorted that you might not understand if not for this post's translation! It has a yellow gem instead of a purple one if facing to the right. In Expert, it'll have four arms, each able to fire Emerald Energy and Ruby Rays from the palms.
"You're not supposed to be here!"
RUN! It's going to get you!
Chasme is a multi-segmented boss with regenerating parts, but all that truly matters is the damage done to the beast's diamond heart. When it reaches 0 HP, the monster is defeated, however the player cannot attack its heart right away.
"This is my home now!"
What does it mean? The monster needs to die!
To expose its heart, the player must first damage the head enough. With the head damaged, the emerald eyes crack, causing the Thing's attacks to lose accuracy. Its soul emerges from the heart to fling shadow spheres when it's exposed. The monster will tend to keep an arm near the soul to protect it.
"Get away!"
Hunt it down! Wait.. why is it fleeing?
After 20 seconds, or if 1,500 damage has been inflicted, it crams its wicked heart back into its vile self as the head revives back to full health. It becomes invincible for 3 seconds, and the cycle repeats.
With its head active, it'll fire Emerald Energy shots, that are bigger but slower laser shots.
"They said I had to stay here!"
Because it's evil!
Chasme's arms can be defeated, but like its head, it will revive over time. If the player would normally die from an arm, it instead latches on and swallows the player whole, sealing them within the shadowstone giant to bury the player alive just as the monster was! (We could use some special deaths.)
"Stop it.. AND JUST LET ME GO!"
It.. wants you gone? She.. it.. the Thing can't be let free!
You're so terrified, but you're not the only one. Using your magic mirror will kill you. A glowing barrier can be seen on the edge of the Cavern layer, but it won't hold you back, allowing for a safe exit to end the battle. The barrier only effects someone else.
"Stop.."
...what?
When its head's health is below 50%, her eyes turn red and begin firing more harmful Ruby Rays. When these touch blocks, it creates a Ruby Wave that starts off slow and speeds up, like a mix of a Blazing Wheel and Demon Scythe.
"I didn't mean to.."
The monster's real! ..But was the legend accurate?
Chasme's Soul will shoot shadow flamelash-like projectiles with high accuracy. Dodge at the last second!
"It was an accident.. I didn't do anything..."
It just needs to die! Why is it crying?
It sheds Quicksilver tears at 25% max diamond heart health. The beast's speed and power increase.
"I don't want to die..."
Wait! Stop! Don't kill her!
Chasme's shadowstone giant's skin cracks and blows up. Her soul gives the most horrified scream as it melts before quickly evaporating. Her heart pendant falls and shatters, unleashing the ancient powers of light and dark from within it. A circle of Shadow Bricks
form to carry her drops.
...It's too late...
