What are your Terraria Headcanons?

Grand Paladin Tyrux

Empress of Light
What are your Terraria Headcanons? They can be anything, the creation of the world, how the corruption was created, who the Lihzahrd are, or even a tiny detail like x NPC's relation to y NPC. Have fun!

Here's my headcanon. Have fun reading it all.

-Gaea is born, creates Terraria, creates two sons, Ra (the sun god) and Cthulhu (the moon god)
-Humans, Lihzahrd, Dryads, Goblins, Merfolk and Truffles are created by Gaea, Cthulhu creates Demons, Ra creates Angels (inhabitants of the sky islands)
-Four other worlds are a part of this solar system, each imbued with a celestial element, Solar, Vortex, Nebula and Stardust. Four humans are drawn to these sources of power, and merge with them, each traveling to space and guarding over the eldritch pillars that lurk on the worlds, to stop them from being unleashed. There is also a fifth, red, world, where an advanced alien society resides.
-Little does anyone know, Cthulhu creates a race in his image to populate the Moon, and the greatest of them is ascended to godhood, and becomes Cthulhu's own brother, lord of the Moon, guardian over it when Cthulhu dwells on Terraria.
-Celestial Guardians group together, travel to the moon, defeat the Moon Lord and seal him away within the Moon. Cthulhu learns of this, but bides his time.
-Things are peaceful, humans have a big civilization in the forests, as well as two other human groups in the snow and desert, goblins live on another continent, dryads live peacefully in the forest, merfolk live in the seas, lihzahrd build temples dedicated to the sun god deep within the jungle, angels keep to the skies while the demons hide in the underworld, truffles stay in their mushroom biomes and do their own thing. Gaea goes into a deep sleep, she just created a planet and millions of life forms after all :p
-Humans and Goblins go to war, humans win and force any remaining goblins back to their homeland.
-Corruption and Hallow are known as the domains of the gods, occasionally adventurers travel to both, Hallow is friendly but the Corruption is a place of darkness, however both stay put.
-The two gods grow restless, and begin to spread their biomes, wanting more power
-A Martian UFO crash lands in the forests, allowing the humans to reverse engineer the technology and create the first guns and advances like the internet and cell phones.
-Cthulhu corrupts a band of humans, who become obsessed with him, and construct a great monument to his power, the Dungeon. Their leader, a true Lunatic, curses an elderly clothier to guard over it. Three warring bands of humans are lured to the dungeon in hopes of power, all are slain and resurrected as a skeletal army, including a few unfortunate Paladins who served the human king and were pursuing the warriors.
-The Lihzahrd construct a great idol to their god's strength, to gain favor. In turn, the Sun God assures them that the jungle will be left untouched by the Hallow
-Gaea regains some of her strength, while she was sleeping both of her sons slowly sapped energy from her. She gathers several children from various races and trains them as Paladins of each biome. Paladins of Purity, Snow, Desert, Ocean and Sky serve the Purity, Paladin of Mushroom keeps to himself to guard his own biome, Paladin of Space (a martian), Paladin of Hell and Paladin of Corruption serve Cthulhu, while the Paladins of Hallow and Jungle serve Ra.
-Biomes spread much further, other races get involved, many humans are corrupted with power and join the armies of light and dark, it explodes into a full blown war.
-Humans, dryads, merfolk and angels band together and serve Gaea, goddess of The Purity. Most monsters, as well as corrupted humans and even a few Martians, the mysterious advanced alien race, serve Cthulhu, god of Darkness. Finally, many humans who fell to the lies of the Hallow, as well as many light and 'good' monsters, serve Ra, god of Light. The war goes on for several years, angels are driven to extinction, demons plot their own takeover.
-In a climatic battle, the gods themselves kill each other, and unleash themselves in their purest forms as spirits of Light and Dark, however a human historian with the assistance of Gaea travels to the underworld and sacrifices his own soul to the demon king in order to lock the spirits away. Most races are almost extinct if not fully extinct, and the Lihzahrd were sunk deep into the jungle and imprisoned in their own temple by Cthulhu during the battle. Several of the survivors and warriors are granted immortality by Gaea. Cthulhu's body, upon destruction, exploded violently, creating The Crimson. The Hallow was completely destroyed, however because of the survival of his Eye, and the existence of the Eater of Worlds, the Corruption served, albeit much weaker.
-You are the Paladin of Purity. The Guide saved your life, and now, after several years of being kept safe by the efforts of Gaea and the Guide, you are unleashed upon the world to defeat Cthulhu and end his evil once and for all, bringing peace to Terraria.

As for the bosses...

Eye of Cthulhu: Cthulhu's eye, it his possessed by a fragment of his spirit that survived being trapped in the Underworld, and carries out his bidding on the surface world.
Eater of Worlds: A beast created by Cthulhu, this monster dwells within the Corruption and feeds of the souls of the dead.
Brain of Cthulhu: Cthulhu's brain, driven insane by the Crimson, is a chaotic creature and dwells within the caverns of the Crimson.
Skeletron: An old man cursed to become a vicious monster, Skeletron is the general of Cthulhu's undead army, and carries out his bidding on the surface world while his brother is trapped within the Moon.
Queen Bee: The queen of her hive, queen bees are INCREDIBLY protective of their young. You broke a larvae, you screwed up, the queen isn't a minion of the gods, just a mother. You monster.
Wall of Flesh: A horrific creature, the keeper of the Underworld was created by the Demon King, and is infused with the soul of the Guide. It keeps the spirits of Light and Dark at bay, but its only a temporary seal...

The Twins, The Destroyer and Skeletron Prime: These three mechanical shells were designed by a steampunker during the Shadow War to defeat their living counterparts, however were never activated and sat abandoned deep underground, until the spirits of the Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds and Skeletron possessed them, using the mechanical bodies to wreak chaos upon the world.
The Flying Dutchman: The mighty ship of a savage pirate crew, it is enchanted with ancient magic discovered by them in a long abandoned Merfolk temple, allowing it to fly.
Plantera: Guardian of the Jungle, this beast was created by Gaea but corrupted by Ra. It holds the key to the Lihzahrd Temple
Golem: Avatar of the Sun God, this Golem was possessed by the Sun God to protect the Lihzahrd tribe in your climatic battle. However, it fell, giving the Lunar Cult an opportunity...
Duke Fishron: A servant of Cthulhu, this beast fought against Neptune, ruler of the Merfolk, for 7 days and 7 nights before it was defeated and imprisoned in an ancient temple. However, its predatory instincts could not be contained, and the Spirit of Dark broke it free of its ancient prison. It is said that it enjoys the taste of mushrooms...
Mourning Wood and Pumpking: Servants of Cthulhu, they were born from the pure fear of young Terrarians surrounding the night of Halloween. Pumpking commands the forces of Halloween in service of their master. However, they only have the strength to rise when the moon is their ally...
Everscream, Santa-NK1 and Ice Queen: These creatures also serve Cthulhu, however they have other goals. The armies of frost, lead by the Ice Queen, claimed the northern pole of Terraria from an old sorcerer and toymaker known as Santa Claus. Using the magical energy from his workshop, they wreaked havoc upon the rise of the Frost Moon until they were defeated. However, shall the Frost Moon rise again, they will certainly return...

Lunatic Cultist: Leader of the Lunar Cult, dedicated to Cthulhu, his brother the Moon Lord, and the master of the Celestial Elements, Phantasm. Some say he's insane, others say he's possessed by an ancient spirit, but regardless, the leader of the cultists is a force to be reckoned with, especially if he absorbs the energy of the Moon itself...

Celestial Towers: The four towers of the Celestials can be compared to the Four Horsemen, they are the bringers of a lunar apocalypse. Each one was imprisoned on their home planet by a Celestial Guardian alongside their minions, but the Lunatic Cultist could be able to absorb enough energy to summon them forth, they would be able to unleash the Moon Lord.

Moon Lord: Brother of Cthulhu, Lord of the Moon, the Moon Lord is one of the most deadly beings in the Universe. The most powerful of the Cthulhi, besides Cthulhu himself, he is one with the celestial element of Phantasm. If he were to be unleashed from his prison by the Lunar Cult, Terraria may not survive.

Terraria is a planet filled with millions of small islands on which we all play.
The world is suffering from forces of darkness and it's all over the place. The forces of light are asleep and are not aware of this.

The Guide is somehow connected to the forces of this planet. Some ancient catalyst, the key to more chaos, a demi-god.

The player is not a tool, no pawn of prophecy, he or she is just someone that mucks about. Goes about his everyday life.

Eventually, instead of helping the planet, he makes the problem worse by smashing the hearts and orbs in the dark forces' domain, out of curiousity or stupidity, and darkness retaliates with horrifying worms and pulls in meteorites as an ultimate wrath and warning: Leave this place. The goblins are none too happy about this and will hunt you down for causing all this crap.

Then, when the player fools around in hell (where he shouldn't be in the first place) he accidentally unleashes the greatest force of darkness this planet knows, up to this point: The Wall of Flesh. Unleashed with the catalyst, the key, the guide.

After the Wall of Flesh is defeated things get climactic. Darkness is furious and lashes out with all its strength while the forces of light sense this sudden change in balance, wake up and strike out as well.

After this it's really just a battle between darkness and light as both capture territory before their enemy can get their hands on it.
The player is again a person mucking about, the idiot who caused all this. Light doesn't care about the player, heck, it probably knows the player is the cause of all this, and will send its minions to kill you if you thread the Hallow.

-

The bosses: All bosses are there to keep the player away from something. They are in areas where the player isn't meant to be because it isn't safe, evil lurks there or tools are hidden there that aren't meant for mortals to handle.

Eye of Cthulhu: Comes to visit you after you've been poking your nose in deep caves where no man should wander, consuming the life force of crystal hearts. I imagine these crystals weren't meant to be used by puny humans and the Eye is there to set things straight.

Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu: Are there to keep you from destroying their habitat.

Skeletron: Is there to keep you out of the Dungeon, where evil is strong, another place you have no business of being.

Queen Bee: Probably the least evil boss of all, after all, you killed one of her kids!

King Slime: Okay, this one is an arse.

Wall of Flesh: The entity that keeps fools from making the planet a worse place to live. Not that evil if you think about it. Afterall, as long as it is alive then the current balance of the planet remains in check.

The Twins/The Destroyer/Skeletron Prime: Are there to get revenge for slaying the Eye/EoW/Skeletron and for making a mess of the planet.

Plantera is the jungle's last form of defense against the corruption but fails to protect its home. It doesn't help at all whenever the foolish player walks through the jungle and destroys her 'children', the bulbs, which pisses her off. If those were left alone then the jungle could grow more Planteras and maybe have a chance.

Golem is safely hidden away in a temple. An evil temple where the lihzahrds are kept inside due to past crimes against nature or whatever. They're locked in there for a reason, that's for sure.
Plantera keeps the key safe... until again the idiot player comes along, gets the key and manages to wake up the Golem, also leaving the door wide open for lihzahrds to get out. (There really should be a lihzahrd invasion.)

The Duke is also not that evil. It's yet again the player who wakes him, annoying him with glowing worms. Is it an allergy? Doesn't he like the glow? Does the worm smell horrible to him? I dunno. But whatever the reason, it's the player who goes out of his way to capture a glowing worm and decides to drown it in the ocean.

TL;DR: We, the players, are the worst thing to happen to Terraria.

So, the god, Lord Terra, created this world from scratch. He created the intelligent life of the planet, as well as the foliage. His greatest achievement, by far, is human life. But Lord Terra was worried about these humans usurping his power. So he created the death penalty. Once Terrarians are alive for a short time, Terra would kill them. If they were good, they would "respawn" and live again. If they were evil, they would be sent to the depths of the Underworld, left to burn for all eternity. The Demons and Imps would protect the prisoners from escaping the Underworld. But the foolish Imps would be manipulated by the prisoners, and teleport them out of Hell. Lord Terra, to counter this, created Cthulhu.

Cthulhu was to guard the Underworld. However, the prisoners promised him glory if they succeeded, and Cthulhu could not resist. He turned the Demons and Imps against Terra, letting the prisoners loose. Lord Terra managed to send them back, but Cthulhu's evil was already known. He turned the Slimes, Demon Eyes and many other species of creature against the humans. But his worst gift was to the humans themselves: Decomposition. Their bodies would rot. If they were good, they would become Zombies and Skeletons, losing their minds to this force and forgetting the good deeds they did. But the Underworld magnified the power of the decomposition, turning the inhabitants to a giant wall... of Flesh.

Well before Lord Terra knew what was going on, he sentenced these seemingly betraying people (now Zombies) into the Underworld. This was a massive massacre, sending millions and millions of souls into the Underworld. And then he realized. The Wall of Flesh was constantly marching forward, but the zombies were making it overflow. The souls of the evil rose to the surface and became the Corruption, a shadowy wasteland where imaginary nightmare creatures rule. In other parts of the world, the bodies rose up and became the Crimson, uncontrolled growth with no intentions other than to kill.

The humans had never seen something like this before, and many of them died (the ones still left, anyways). That's when Terra realized. He had to stop the Wall of Flesh. So he created barriers that stopped the Wall from progressing forward. This did not rid the Corruption and Crimson, nor decomposition, as Lord Terra created Cthulhu with equal power to himself. Soon, Terra watched as his creations fell apart and all the humans died out, husks of their former selves. Furious, Lord Terra stabbed Cthulhu's two eyes out and ripped out his brain, and when that didn't hurt him, cursed Cthulhu into immaterial form, not knowing that his eye and brain were still alive.

Centuries later, the wasteland formerly known as Terraria was revisited by Lord Terra, trying to restore hope in himself now that Cthulhu was dead. First, he created the Guide. To stop him from decomposing, he created a relic that contained some of his human form: The Voodoo Doll. And to stop anyone from seeing him in his glory, he was sent into the Wall of Flesh when the Doll was destroyed. What Terra doesn't know is that the Guide would overload the Wall, making it break through the barriers and unleashing the Wall in its entirety. He gave it to the Demons and Imps for safe keeping, thinking that the curse on them was lifted and they were good again. They didn't know what it was, but one demon kept it as a good luck charm.

Terra imbued the Guide with infinite knowledge, but the Guide found himself not wanting to venture outwards after finding out what happened to the world. So, Lord Terra created a second human being, the player. The player was imbued with a sense of adventure, someone who was willing to restore the world to its former state. The player finally took down the Wall of Flesh in an unknown turn of events even Lord Terra was unable to predict, unleashing two forces: The remainder of the Corruption or Crimson, and the souls of the Zombies sacrificed in vein, the Hallow. The world is now balanced, just not in the way Lord Terra envisioned.

Here's some of my own ideas:

-The Mechanical Bosses were a weapon created by the Steampunker during the Shadow War to fight against humanity. They were never activated, but after you kill the Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds and Skeleton, and the Spirits of Light and Dark are awakened, the Spirit of Dark helps the souls of the three bosses possess the mechanical shells.

-The Spirits of Light and Dark are the sun god worshiped by the Lihzahrd and Cthulhu respectively. They're both children/creations of Gaea, the creator of Terraria

Ever wonder why the Angler dies in a puff of smoke the way ghost-like monsters do?

The Angler is actually a ghost - and he was killed by Duke Fishron. The fishing quests are actually a stealth training exercise designed to make you a skilled enough fisherman to catch Duke Fishron and slay him to avenge the Angler's death.
I actually think he was once on a ship with his parents and the ship sunk, killing them all.
For some reason the Angler still doesn't understand he died, possibly long ago, never finding peace. And he likely never understood why his parents were suddenly gone.

When he says:
  • "I don't have a mommy or a daddy, but I have a lot of fish! It's close enough!"
I feel he does miss his parents but pretends, like some little kids do, that he's all tough. So I get the idea he's still looking for them or at least hoping to see them again someday.

GUYZ, IT WAS BECUZ DEY DIDN'T WANT TERRURIA TO BE RATED EM!

Joking, joking. But this is actually a great headcanon!

Yes! I've been waiting for this thread for so long..

The races of Terraria refer to the Moon as "Cthulhu, the evil god". The Moon causes evil in form of monsters. Many monsters only appear when the Moon is present. The sun, "the good god", is there to balance it out. These two are in constant fight with eachother.

The Corruption is a form of fungus, mutated by the Moon to spread and corrupt both dead and living. However, this force of darkness can not resist the power of light. Non-corrupted things all have a little piece of light inside. For example, a weapon or tool used by a good person can not be corrupted. Instead, the corruption forms a "pearl" around it, to protect itself from the light (We're talking symbolic light here, not actual light).
When a pearl is broken, the corruption is again exposed to light, wich alarms the corruption's guardian, the Eater of Worlds.

This theory has a few kinks in it. If the sun is the "good" god, why was the Golem, a being empowered with the sun's energy (as evidenced by the sun engraving, Sun Stone drop, and yellow beams), locked away in the Lihzahrd Temple? Why does the Solar Pillar, some supposed ancient construct imbued with the sun's magic, bring destruction and chaos when it is summoned by the leader of the Cthulhu Cultists? I don't think the sun is as good natured as you think it is. :p

My guess is that the Sun and Moon, Spirits of Light and Dark, Sun God and Cthulhu, neither are truly 'good'. Terraria needs balance to survive, and Balance isn't an epic war between 'good' and evil.

The Lihzahrd are evil and building a Golem to take over the world, the Witch Doctor tries to stop them but is exiled, he sees that you have managed to defeat the mighty Queen
Bee, and decides to seek out you for help in stopping their evil plan. So you head of into the jungle and defeat Plantera, the Lihzahrd's plant guardian thing and get the key to their temple. You break into their base, slaughter their entire species, destroy their Golem before it's finished, and take the altar to make a Golem farm so you can acquire unlimited health potions. Then you go kill a shark pig thing, and ruin Christmas.

To add to my earlier post: (1.3 spoilers)

About hell: Ancient beings once lived there, most likely being the cause of the corruption on this planet. All the houses are empty now, furniture still around like people once sat at tables and read books from their bookcases.
Were they undone by their own hands? Did they just pack up and leave or have they been punished and turned into demons?
Or did they see what they've done and tried to undo the damage by turning their entire people into a last line of defense, the Wall of Flesh?
Whatever the case, Terraria is in a weakened state, a perfect entryway for something not of this world to use as a way into our galaxy...

- So the Golem was safely locked inside this temple until the player releases him, killing him but the damage has been done. The seal has been broken, the way is open for an even greater evil to arrive, one that threatens not only Terraria but the very galaxy. Which leads to...

- Pissed off Martians! The player has done so much damage so far, but at least only Terraria was in danger, not other planets. This changes now. The Martians arrive, looking for you, trying to destroy you in order to stop things from going critical mass.

- Meanwhile, in order to contain the damage, a few cultists from an unknown race travel to the Dungeon to try to reseal this evil presence that's threatening the world and galaxy, the Moon Lord.
Why the Dungeon? Good question. Maybe it's here where everything began. Maybe it's a place where the ether is weak and evil can pass through.
Maybe it's a place where evil is strong to begin with, feeding the Moon Lord.

It's pretty clear the cultists mean no harm at all. You can walk by them and they will leave you alone. But ofcourse the idiot player had to kill them.
Which pisses off their boss, and rightfully so! You've thwarted their tries to repair the damage that YOU have caused! The insolence!

- Their leader killed, there's yet another safety measure keeping the Moon Lord from reaching the planet and/or galaxy.
Having followed the events on this planet OR simply feeling that something's amiss here and it needs to be stopped, 4 ancient species arrive, bringing 4 powerful shielded pillars with them to set up a barrier that'll stop the Moon Lord from entering this world.
They give everything trying to kill you when you get near one because they know what the stakes are. Otherwise they leave you alone, they're not hunting you down all over the map. They're like a universal police force, protecting the galaxy from things that weren't meant to be in our reality.

- The player manages to weaken the pillars and destroy them, because he is stupid, not having a clue about what's coming next.
With Golem's seal broken, the cultists' inability to repair the damage and with the pillars gone nothing stands in the Moon Lord's way to enter this world, destroying it and move on to other worlds.

TL;DR:
You and me, the players, are complete idiots!

So funny, how I actually was exactly thinking about this. My tale would actually be this:

When the world of Terraria was found, four people set their first step on the island. Two male adults, one female adult, and one boy child. The adults names were Cthulu, Ocram and Auria, but the boy's name was never known. As the three first settlers built their civilisation, they started exploring the lands, and found a temple deep in the underground.

The folk, a reptile-like race that seemed to inhabit the world long before they ever set foot, talked about the divine powers of the skies above. They said to have linked a bond with the Sun and Moon, the ability to give life to motionless objects, and obtain powers beyond mortality, but they refused to disclose how.

The group became in different opinions, what they should do. Cthulu turned interested, showing greed to the power that resided inside that temple, and Auria said it should be used to cleanse and protect the land. Ocram did not show any side, but instead had been dealing with a different interest, the corrupted part of magic that resided in the world.

One night, Cthulu decided to make a move and head for the temple again, sneaking into what the lizard folk did not want to be seen. As his assault went on in the temple, he found a mysterious tablet that talked of controlling the moon to block the sun, to create an eternal night. He found fragments as well of an amulet depicting a sun. Without saying any word, he hid what he had found from Auria and Ocram, untill one day the little boy found the tablet, thinking it was just some simple scribblings. But without realizing, the tablet started to glow and crack, where soon the sun started to fade away behind the moon.

The charm, which Cthulu had been merging with another identical charm of the moon, began glowing brightly, notable for everyone. It had adapted the power of the sun, and the moon, and now they both were high in the sky at the same time, the charm was capable of divine ascension, without the slighest realisation. Auria went after the light that the charm emitted, and confronted Cthulu of what it was. Hastily Cthulu grabbed it away from Auria, but as they both touched the charm, a fierce light started to flow through their veins and their appearances changed.

Both of them disappeared, and Ocram destroyed the charm. Even though it still had some residual power inside it, he as well turned, but as the magic became corrupt from breaking the object, Ocram's appearance became corrupted and twisted into an unrecognizable being.

Soon after, Cthulu and Auria engaged into war, as their indifferences now became reality. Chutlu, with his new powers, crafted life. He crafted a landscape full of the required resources to create and physical beying; trees made out of bone, rock made out of flesh, and plants filled with blood. Auria instead enhanced some of the beings already on the world, such as horses and slimes, but the choice as limited.

Cthulu's conquest against Auria became fierce, untill one day Auria's defenses broke. Auria was killed and her region started to disappear. The remaining essence from Auria was banished to the depths below, behind a wall of Cthulu's own expertise; flesh. Only then, Ocram seemed to have caught Cthulu's attention, but he did not kill him. Instead, to avoid conflict, he sent him to a different location on the plane, far away from any conflict.

The lizard folk were upset. Humans, trespassers even, stole from them and attained godhood. But they had dealt with gods before, and since Cthulu was only a young god, he would not be a challenge. 8 Lihzahrd priests went to the region where Cthulu was residing, and Cthulu became underwhelmed by a controlling power.

He was banished to the moon, but in his last moments he did two more things; he separated part of his brain and eyes to the lands he owned, so he could always watch over them. The last he did, was to create a guardian made solely out of bone, to protect the little boy that came with them. The lihzahrds nodded as Cthulu was banished, and created a guardian to protect the temple. A guardian made out not of flesh or spirits, but out of a plant, and hid the key in it. Hopefully to ward any trespassers out, for now.

The Cultists' ritual was actually stopping the coming of Not Cthulhu from happening, but you interrupt their ritual, nearly dooming the world in the process. Fortunately, the cultists' ritual managed to make it so only half of the abomination's power could get through to this universe (that's why half its body is missing) so yeah, "good job almost breaking it, hero."

How is the expert mode explained?
Well, gas that makes everything stronger and more aggressive is released into the world you create, which explains why expert mode is a world creation option, rather than a character option. Even you get affected by these substances, making you capable of handling a 6th accessory. Their absence, however, renders you unable to do that. That's why in normal worlds, where no strength gas was released, the 6th accessory doesn't have effect.

// I tried.

Moon Lord is a celestial parasite inhabiting and manipulating the remains of a gigantic, cthulhu-like alien creature.
then why is he mentioned to be Cthulhu brother?
(post not supposed to be merged!)
cultists origins: one day long, long ago in the land of terraria a group of 5 worshipers were called together to create a cult to stop disasters from coming. 2 were skilled archers 2 were just normal plain worshipers and 1 was a magic master who became the boss. however one day they were unable to reproduce before they befell to a possibly fatal illness, but were however able to contact the goblins to send equally skilled warriors of they're own. they also were able to send medics, and they helped the cultists however. the boss was unable to recover, he sent his spirit and knowledge to a goblin mage with great potential already. that goblin became the lunatic cultist. eventually they were sealed away by the spirit of the place that they worshiped, see they worshiped at a place where the seal would spread most effectively, the dungeon, the spirit of the dungeon skeletron used a bunch of his magical energy to seal them in the lihzard temple, and eventually into the golem itself, as time went on skeletron grew in power and made physical creations using it, when the player defeats skeletron his power is gone but the seal was always physical and was a seperate entity so the cultists were still trapped by the power of the golem. when the golem is defeated the cultists are released and let into the dungeon again, then the player either wreaks havoc and kills all the normal cultists, accidentally whacks one in the face, or just thinks of them as evil guys trying to take over the world. and their boss gets mad and retaliates. the player defeats him and before the cultist dies he sends pillars of power to shield the world and misunderstand that the player thinks he is saving the world try to kill him to defend it. the player, not understanding, kills them and breaks the seal on the moon lord, the player kills the moon lord bringing a true end to this cycle of chaos. (also the cultists worshiping seal previously mentioned was indeed broken by skeletron sealing them away but it wasn't enough to allow the moon lord in back then just in case you rage at me about that!)
Edit: Explanation? the lunatic cultust has a massive nose XD

an edition to my earlier post and an explanation to other bosses:

the eye of Cthulhu: the eye of Cthulhu is a guardian. originally having a good and humorous personality the eye was corrupted by the power of the moon lord and was the least powerful of the corrupted guardians.

Eater of worlds: the players first act of crime. the shadow orbs helped keep the balance of the world in check destroying 2 was bad enough but upon the event of the player breaking the third orb a non-corrupted guardian awoke. originally being a small corruption worm the god behind it all made it grow to a humongous size. being already from a world of corruption the moon lord was unable to corrupt it.

the BoC: the crimson hearts worked just like the shadow orb and again being destroyed by the player a truly corrupted guardian awoke the BoC was originally a baby eater of worlds that ventured to far. being truly pure the moon lord was able to corrupt it and grow it's brain to such a humongous size his body no longer existed.

Skeletron: Evil from the start, a guardian holding some of the moon lords power.

The Slime king: a corrupted giant slime with a crown on top. Wow moon lord, just wow, why go and make THIS monstrosity!

Wall of Flesh: using the flesh of terrarians the mind of the guides original form the moon lord and the god behind it all cooperated for once and made this pure yet corrupted wall of flesh. defeating it is not only wrong but it also throws the world out of balance and creates the hallow.

mecha bosses: spirits of the formerly corrupted bosses revived by the moon lord.

plantera: a badly STUPID thing to destroy the god behind it all created this to hide the lihzard key

the duke fishron: a big freakin' corrupted fish, dragon, and piggy fusion.

the pilars: you know this but not they're lore created using powers of the universe, the players final and worst crime is killing them and unleashing the moon lord.

moon lord: we know this evil monster. he has done it all though through crime summoning him allows the player to end the cycle of chaos. being Cthulhu's own brother he is immensely powerful. the player has finally finished the long battle.

and an explanation of the god who created it all :joy:
