- A P-51 in flight.
This was a Bomber escort and Fighter-bomber used extensively during WW2, the P-51 had a very long range, for escorting allied bombers to the front lines. Created in 1940 and improved afterwards with, you guessed it, more range.
It was finally retired after the Korean war after the advent of jet fighters, nowadays used a remarkable racing plane. The last one was retired from the Dominican air force in 1984.
Honestly? This thing looks like it was really trying to be a jet fighter and couldn't quite make it. It was one of the few planes able to match the Luftwaffe's own planes.
