Terraria: Otherworld Changing of the Guard: An Update from Otherworld

I get it the devs are focusing on making their game, but would it be that detrimental to give us ,something Like a picture or a news every month or so ?

A huge majority of coding does not yield pretty pictures, and can not be easily put into words. They told us to maybe forget about it until they come to us with news by themselves. Asking for them will not make anything easier.

any news regarding the current state of the game would be so underwhelming there would be a backclash about it.

That would be both a detrimental effect to posting them, and a good reason not to do so.

We all are impatient, but the devs have said it countless times: they have a standard for quality, and will settle for nothing less. Timing is not their prime objective, making the game that they want as good a game as they want it to be is, and that says a lot about the quality of both the team and the final product. Instead of getting our hopes down for the month, year etc. it will come, let us all get our hopes and hype up for the game we will eventually play.

See I'm the opposite. I think it's a waste of the developers time to keep going "We're still working on it" because no one is going to be happy with just that message. They're gonna expect an actual update, with screenshots or something of substance to prove progress is being made. Such things take time to put together with any professionalism. That is time that won't be spent making any actual progress. I'd rather have the radio silence if it means they can get stuff done faster.

Indie games development would be a lot smoother if people could just control their fears and be patient. Too many people fixate on needing information as though we have a right to it. The internet has solidly been detrimental to the creative process in most artistic mediums.
I respect that, and I even think you're right. It'd be easier if people simply weren't so impatient.

But that's a pipe dream, so better to cover your bases than lose a massive amount of potential support.

So is this like Terraria 2? or is it just another game in the same universe.
Another game, different universe. Instead of the spread of corruption, you're on a world that is already fully corrupt. Also, this is not Terraria 2.
Good afternoon, Terrarians!

The teams at Re-Logic and Engine Software would like to take a few moments to provide the entire Terraria Community with a major announcement. As we hinted earlier in our quite vague "teaser", we will be collaborating on a new project that is not Terraria 2, nor anything else that we had discussed before.

That I can understand,, I can wait YEARS for a game to come that's not a problem to me, hell I waited 4 for Demon gaze 2 to come, and still waiting for the next Elder Scroll what I'm trying to say is, it would be more honest to simply tell us

"Look the previous guy we worked with screwed us, now we must redo everything from scratch, so don't expect any big news till the game come out which we are sure won't be this year, see ya in 2018" , but don't bullcrap us with "stay tuned for more info".

Also I would like to see where they told us to forget about it ...

Good Day, Terrarians-

We wanted to take a few moments to share some important news with you all in regards to the status of Terraria: Otherworld.

As you all know from when we first announced the game a good while back, Re-Logic’s focus has and always will be on delivering complete and quality game experiences to our fanbase. This means that we will not compromise game quality for speed to market or for any other reasons within our control. Our team had a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, as much as we hate to say it (and in spite of all of the reforms we tried last year) - the current state of the game is still equal parts far from that vision and well behind schedule.

As a result, we have made the decision to move on from having Engine Software continue development of Terraria: Otherworld. Re-Logic has possession of the game (code, art, sounds, etc.) as it exists today, and we have been examining the array of options available to us to get TOW to a place to where we can confidently deliver on the vision and expectations we all have for this game. After taking a good hard look at everything, we feel that a new and fresh start/direction is the only way Otherworld will ever reach its full potential at this point.

So, where does TOW head from here? The great news is that we already have a dedicated and passionate team ready to pick up the torch and continue the Otherworld journey! Based upon their really impressive work to-date with the Terraria re-write on Console/Mobile, coupled with an amazingly on-point proposal for completing Otherworld (after a thorough review of the game on their end), we have made the decision to bring Pipeworks on board as our new development partner for Terraria: Otherworld!

We know that the "radio silence" and all of the shifting development work aimed at continuing the journey for Terraria: Otherworld has been frustrating for a lot of you. It isn’t a happy or easy call for us either – however, we feel strongly that we owe it to our community and loyal customers to uphold the standards that both you and we expect and to focus on delivering the best possible games that we can for you all to play. The length of the silence was purely driven by "these things take time to occur and then set up" coupled with our desire to have an actual solution/path forward before just sharing the news about Engine.

Come whatever may, quality is simply not something we are willing to compromise on to make a quick buck. It may be painful in the short term, but our sincere hope is that it will pay off for everyone in the long term. Clearly, had we known this would be the scenario way back then, we would have held off on announcing the game until a later time - but such is game development. That said, we are really happy and confident with the new team and new plan - and cannot wait to get back on track.

Some quick details/questions that you may have:

  • Scope: We will be working with Pipeworks to examine the entire game, from top to bottom, to see how it fits with our high expectations and core vision for this project.
  • Timing: As we know more about the specifics of timing, etc and/or have fresh spoilers to share, we absolutely will - though expect the "quiet period" to go on just a bit longer while Pipeworks gets ramped up and we actually have new things to show.
  • Impact on other work: Pipeworks will staff up appropriately so that the Otherworld workload does not have any impact on the timing/quality of the Terraria 1 Console/Mobile/Switch launch
  • Other Changes: We will be doing a full refresh of all of the Otherworld public-facing locations (Website/Twitter/Facebook/etc.) - including a revamp of the logo itself  As these are completed, we will be sure to let you know so that you can check things out!

Thanks so much to you all for your amazing support of Terraria, Terraria: Otherworld, and our company. It is that support that drives us every day to do amazing things for you and we look forward to sharing more of what is to come very soon.

We are sure that you have a ton of questions, and we will answer what we can – but we will not delve into some areas out of either respect or confidence or the unknown. So we will ask your patience and forgiveness in advance there.

Thanks!
Man this is cool! The texture is all different though(from original terraria). :(

I think what it means is that this is an OTHER WORLD in the Terraria universe.
Think of it as meaning Terraria Another Place.

I have 2 questions
1. How much will it cost?
2. When is it coming out?
1. If it's the same as with Terraria 1, estimate $20, probably up to $30 at launch.
2. Considering that they officially stopped hiring beta-testers this august, expect next year. I'd say autumn 2018. Well, that, or they're putting the game on ice for some reason. After all, there has been no update for half a year; could be anything.

I wonder, though, if there is any info except for what kind of game it's supposed to be. For example, how moddable it will be, as terraria 1 is very mod-unfriendly: basically all mods for it are hacks or need hacks to work. Was there a dev post about that?

After three years of waiting and gods knows how much longer, I wouldn't try to estimate. I would hear an estimate, get hyped, be sorely dissapointed. At this point I try to forget about the game. Occasionally check for new news but never expect anything.

Since Otherworld is still not out I've been playing this unfinished game:
5C7AD3783F1C33F2E58D74D0C2746A33D52756C3

Too many unfinished games out there

Otherworld is definitely not cancelled. There's only so many times Re-Logic and Pipeworks can answer the same question over and over again. The game wasn't meeting expectations so it had to be rebuilt from the ground up. That takes time. A lot of time. Also, Console 1.3 is the top priority right now. I'd reasonably expect more news about PC Terraria and Terraria Otherworld after Console 1.3 is out and everything is running smoothly.
