You can't "crash" the spawn limit. The game only allows X number of mobs to spawn at any given time, which is why you carry around a radar (or anything that displays # of monsters) and wait for it to stop going up. Then kill 1 thing at a time to make sure more stuff can spawn.
Having a lifeform analyzer (or anything with the same effect) will help too, as the saucers show up on it IIRC.
