What kind of side scroller, though? Beat 'em up/shoot 'em up? There's just so many kinds you can try. I dunno much about sidescrollers.

Mario is a side-scroller, right? Maybe you should finish that.

That's just what I was thinking; in that case, it would've been Mario 3; it's a favorite of mine.

Hmm... tried Freedom Planet yet? That game has a pretty good mix of challenge, though you can also set it to Easy if it gets too hard in the middle of a playthrough (you can save&exit and change difficulty at any time). It's very anime-ish, but the gameplay is rock solid and smooth as butter at the same time. You definitely want a controller/gamepad though!

The characters play differently, if you like Sonic, go for the purple girl. If you like wall jumping and climbing go for the Green girl. The third girl? I've not tried her yet but I heard she's hard to use (since she has half the health the other two do for example).
