Might want to use something other than a flamethrower then. Not that one can't have decent range but a sniper rifle is better for what you want to do. Either that or airdrop some napalm.

I'm honestly not sure if there is a "safe distance" with a flamethrower.
Besides with Terraria flamethrowers. Those things fire ridiculously far compared to real ones.

Actually Enderwither there are some flamethrower with more range. In World War 2 there was one that could reach 15 meters.

15meters would be... let's see, 3 blocks is about 2 meters in Terraria, so around 22~23 blocks in range.
