Though to be fair, the game was far better than people let on. With a few edits, you can improve the game 10x easily. It was one of THE most complex videogames ever for its time, and has many features that wouldn't be come standard for several years more.

I think the main bad rep comes from being a contributing factor to the 1983 video game crash. However, ET was (and is) still a terrible game by any measure.
I'm not sure what features you are referring to, as far as I know ET didn't set any standards for other games to follow, only to avoid.
