Have the mod create an int world based variable (like "is boss downed") with value zero during worldgen, increase it every time the world is loaded or a player joins, send the new value to all connected players and...

I'm having a blast exploring an industrial sized world in this mod. I found an ice cave and explored it for over 50 minutes (and I'm somewhat agile exploring), yet I felt I didn't explore half the cave.

Download the example mod, use notepad to open the .cs files, and try reading through.
The quickest and easiest one to get are tModLoader itself of course and Notepad++ which has some useful coding stuff. Use it to open .cs files.
So far this is an almost all-swords mod. I have an idea of what they'll need to craft and at what stage of the game, but in this version they all require 1 dirt block only.
Nothing to do with all the dirt you find? With 500 dirt (but in this version only 1 is needed)...
