Because Terraria is a bit idiot-proofed and the tiles are removed so that you wouldn't suffocate. Get a bed, then you'll be able to change the spawn point to something more sensible.

I don't know how long you wait before you do that. I do remember, though, that depending on your rig it might take some time for N Terraria to launch the first time you do it (shouldn't be more than a few minutes, though, assuming you don't have an ancient-ish computer).
