1.3 Theory: It's All About the Ocean

UPDATE: 5/22/15

Been thinking about this a bit more.

Just found out 1.2.4 is actually an update created to lessen the wait for 1.3 using all new 1.3 stuff. Fishing, minecarts, Fishron, etc. were all originally part of 1.3. Now, I'm pretty sure there'll be a bit of space content, considering the reveal of Martian Madness. And I believe that Martian Madness is real; after all, considering my theory, where would the Laser Machinegun come from? There are a few other things that couldn't be explained otherwise too, like those sketches Crowno showed off and where they would come from. I also think that Cthulhu's head will only be a miniboss like Mourning Wood and Santa-NK1, and that the true Lunar Boss will probably be a moon goddess, which is where the armor Red's wearing in that picture would come from. A moon goddess fits with the theme of the event as well, as it could be a tide goddess or something.

Guys! Guys! I just had a breakthrough!

We all know that the 1.3 update is coming up, and we've seen a lot of cool stuff about it. We know that the focus will be the Lunar Event, right? The final boss in the game? Well, we all think it's about space, right? The Lunar Event is a space-themed event, right? I don't think so.

I think the main chunk of the update deals with the Ocean, much like 1.2 and the Jungle.

Currently, the hardest boss in the game is Duke Fishron. Added along with fishing, he's basically the Ocean's boss. He is also more of a side-boss, but I think that the Truffle Worms are now gonna spawn only after Golem... or something. Also, 1.2.4, the latest non-patch update, focused entirely on fishing, with fishing covering basically everything added in the update, including Fishron. Anyway, Fishron is... well, a fish, right? And you fight him in the Ocean. So I'm pretty sure he'll be the gateway to the new content.

Then there are the Cultists, with Cthulhu obviously on the coin. Cthulhu has had an overwhelming presence in Terraria without actually being there. You fight his eye, his brain, and Ichor is mentioned a lot in H. P. Lovecraft novels. And a ton of people are still suggesting Cthulhu as a boss even after Redigit himself said there wouldn't be one. However, that doesn't mean he won't include more parts of Cthulhu... Maybe exterior ones. We might be fighting his Head, who knows. And what I've heard is that Cthulhu... is a sea lord. Don't quote me on that, I've never read Lovecraft, but the sea is definitely what he's associated with most. Another clue.

What does the Lunar Event have to do with any of this?

Tides.

As you can see, the creatures do look spacey, but upon closer inspection they could also look like sea creatures. The floating tentacled creatures squid, the crawling things crabs, heck, the humanoids' ears look like fins, hinting that they could be merfolk like the ones that you transform into. And also, that "boss". Is that a tentacle beard? It looks like a tentacle beard. And is it a full body? Nope. It's a head. The Head of Cthulhu. But the biggest hint comes from the enviroment. What biome is it in? Forest. What is the background? Ocean. And while it could be near the ocean, I don't see a single block of sand.

And finally, what about the space gear? That, I think, comes after the Lunar Event. After all, Red probably tested this and everything, so he has the gear. And while the majority of the Hardmode expansion could be around the Ocean, the moon is still a giant space rock. :p

What do you guys think? Do you agree or disagree?

It's a very interesting speculation. I like the way you've pointed out these things. The tides in particular seem to make a lot of sense, and they rather excite me. I also like how, because the moon is so close, it brightens up the land a little bit.
Who knows, maybe you could be right. It makes a lot more sense that the moon would affect the ocean more than it would affect the rest of outer space (causing the aliens to invade earth).
Some wonderful ideas here, I like where this is going.

Well it took a couple of days longer than I was expecting, but someone finally guessed "Head of Cthulhu"

Interesting speculation nonetheless.

The one thing in the OP's pic that he DIDN'T draw an arrow to.

The thing in the middle of the freaking screen.

The giant green-and-blue planet.

My Theory:

We go to the Moon Itself and the game gives us a way to switch worlds -- the regular world, and the moon.

Think about it -- the game does not normally feature this HUGE FREAKING PLANET in the background, does it? Why would it? There's a Sun&Moon for Day&Night. The way that huge planet is in the background tells me that this pic in the OP is taken from the Moon's perspective.

EDIT: IMO, the mining machine might have something to do with it, maybe you get in that thing and fly up to what used to be the top of the world to enter space, and keep going up and up/down flips upside down and you land on the moon?

EDIT2: This could easily be done by simply doubling the size of the world, and adding the 2nd "world" flipped upside down ontop of the first, and just make the game swap directions just like drinking a Gravitation Potion when you pass the barrier between the two.

Im pretty sure that giant planet is the moon itself and yes, there is a green moon variant.

Seems pretty smart... But what about the scale between the "head" and Cthulhu's brain?

Pretty sure that the brain is bigger. .3.

If I'll silhouet all crimson monsters, then you'll also think they could come from another biome totally not from the crimson.
Ocean background is probably because that's the best background with an horizon, It would be silly if you can't see a massive moon because of the mountians.
1.2.4 was pretty much the ocean update for me though. And explain what the stars has to do with it, because they look like foregrounded to me, and looks like they're coming from that massive.....thing.
