1.3 Theory: It's All About the Ocean

Interesting theory, although unsure to believe or rather take it upon myself to go with it; however something tells me that this is on our world. Anyone notice the world tree to the left?

I am inclined to say this is in a forest biome with that world tree to the left being key determining that. As with the moon, it could be that when the event starts the moon gets closer to the world. After all way back when, the our moon of earth would fill the sky; and astral observers & scientist have mentioned our moon slowly moving away from earth in its' spiral. Proven from a laser pointing device determining distance from earth over the course of years in observation.

Anyway it is liable that something draws the moon closer to represent the overall event in a different manner than just a phase of the moon.

As to the many creatures... Only one, the wurm does resemble similar to the ones we find already within our world, but with some small differences. I mean look at the other wurm creatures we have. They each have a variation in appearance.

The rest of them seem more thematic to the event in question. Probably might be a bunch of ocean like creatures that decided to join landlubbers... Could be descending upon the world from the moon itself. Many guesses, but non are really all that concrete. Lots of speculation on that, just looking at that pic alone. I am more curious to know what that spindly looking mob in the upper right is. That one looks interesting to me. Almost like a plasma ball floating in air, or a curled up basic lifeform that has not left the ancient amorite stage.(Don't know how to spell that or even if that is the correct name) The trilobite I believe... Something like that...

Anyway that is my thoughts, and I'll be patient enough to wait it out and see with interest what will be.:)

Been thinking about this a bit more.

Just found out 1.2.4 is actually an update created to lessen the wait for 1.3 using all new 1.3 stuff. Fishing, minecarts, Fishron, etc. were all originally part of 1.3. Now, I'm pretty sure there'll be a bit of space content, considering the reveal of Martian Madness. And I believe that Martian Madness is real; after all, considering my theory, where would the Laser Machinegun come from? There are a few other things that couldn't be explained otherwise too, like those sketches Crowno showed off and where they would come from. I also think that Cthulhu's head will only be a miniboss like Mourning Wood and Santa-NK1, and that the true Lunar Boss will probably be a moon goddess, which is where the armor Red's wearing in that picture would come from. A moon goddess fits with the theme of the event as well, as it could be a tide goddess or something.

You've put quite a lot of thought in this theory, and I like fan theories, so +1 for you sir. Although I am convinced that 1.3 is all about Space, not as a biome (well... who knows?), but as main theme. It's been nicknamed as the Lunar Update, and the spoilers show so as well.

Originally, I thought Martian Madness was fake due to the date it was posted on, which would fit with my theory, but it wouldn't explain some other space content like the Laser Machinegun, Crowno's sketches, and the Shadowflame Hex Doll. But also, in that spoiler, Red was seen swinging some sort of Cutlass, making me think that this is true.

Do you know what would be the ultimate troll? Duke Fishron is the Lunar boss.

The ultimate troll would be, that the moon is actually the sun.

The moon controls the tides right? Super moon, tides come in... it all makes sense

That's actually not bad.
It would be cool if ocean level would rise during lunar event... or something.

Wouldn't that also mean the world could potentially be flooded?

If you look at the islands, in the background it already is flooded. Did you mean the overworld should be flooded?

This theory's only basis is that shadows look like one thing and there are islands. Big woop. The big planet/moon thing is not limited to the ocean. It can be seen in the latest spoiler video high up in the sky, with a BG that looks nothing like the other one. Also I do not think there is gonna be a "head of Cthulhu", as that is basically the big guy himself. Also it could be anything. For instance:

We are just theorizing, everybody has different theories. It doesn't mean they are wrong or right. Just is, this thread is theorizing all about how it relates to the ocean, other threads would theorize differently!

But it doesn't make logical sense! This is Red's last update, intending to complete the game. Why only focus on the ocean? This update is spanning the entire game, and to be frank there is no confirmed features that relate to the ocean but 1.2.4, which as said before was Red wanting to complete the game.

The theory is interesting, but I don't believe that it's all about the ocean. The image shown to us could be an ocean-related Invasion. Something causes the moon to come closer, which causes the water levels to rise, making creatures from the depths to attack us. That would probably not be all that is related to the moon, but instead one of the first invasions/events that occur due to the moon approaching?

Bringing the ocean "on par" with the other biomes is a rather narrow-minded thought as the space biome, as of 1.2.3, is even more empty.
So imo 1.2.4 was the ocean part of 1.3 and 1.3 itself will go "above and beyond" the terrarian world as we know it.

*brings in a barrage of spoilers showcasing space-related content*

Everybody else is saying it is space stuff, we are saying it's ocean. None of the theory may be right, maybe all, and maybe just some. We are just guessing and having a good time. Sure it doesn't make sense now, but it might later. Maybe it is both space and the ocean. You never know!

I'm saying it is neither, but focuses on EVERYTHING. If this is the game completing update, Red's final update, why would they only focus on one biome? The whole "1.3 will focus on _______" thing is flawed, but who knows! Find out on the 30th.

If you look at the Ocean Biome by itself, It's rather barren outside of Duke Fishron which is entirely end-game.

Even the desert has the chance to spawn pyramids which gives it some use early on.

If you say the ocean has no use the fishing potions, angler, DF, palm wood, fancy starfish, and the Ocean Fishing Tools say otherwise. Molten tier pickaxe right after you get a merchant!

Interesting theory to say the least. it would be nice to have some more ocean content, but I think desert content is needed even more.
