This is a guide that ranges from beginner to expert levels of difficulty, you can also check out the guide to enemy farming on the wiki for more in-depth tips/help.
Cavern Mob Farm:
Gathering the Materials:
The main materials you would need are any block of your choosing (as long as it cannot be corrupted) as well as whatever you have for mining, the better the mining power/speed you have then the faster you can get this farm setup, and the amount required to make up whatever biome you are trying to farm in (or none if you don't want to farm in a specific biome). If you're playing on skyblock then the tiles needed for desert and snow biome will be reduced to 300.
Making the Farm
I like to place all of my building materials in a chest like this:
Farm Difficulty:
To get right into it we are going to start the walkway like this:
We want to do this so we can make the hoik easier
Then you want to go 77 tiles out (a stack of 74 if you are going off of the first image). Then repeat that 2 more times.
Then slope the last 2 rows twice, this should get you the desired hoik shape.
lastly for the hoik step, just blockswap the last row with platforms so they don't de-slope when you go and place your spawning platform underneath.
Once you complete the hoik just remove the first row and place the 86 stack across under your platform hoiks and add a teleporter at the end for convenience.
I used colored blocks to help see the process, they can all be the same block.
and also make sure to create a 1 way wall for weapons to pass through
you can add lava here too if it's relevant (special seeds like Don't Dig Up and GetFixedBoi will make enemies not take contact damage from lava).
Biome Variations:
For the most part you can consider these upgrades to your farm as most of these biomes will overlap (dungeon does not overlap with underground desert, crimson/corruption will not overlap with hallowed) and you can easily change out the contents depending on what you need after getting it setup. I will also be using the "Advanced Wiring" setup for these examples but you can use any of the farms listed to do this. (although there are varying results in efficiency depending on the enemy). It's okay if the background doesn't change.
If you have any questions, feel free to join the Terraria Wiring Server on discord, it offers a chat full of experts on farms and game code to help you discern your problems with the farm.

Cavern Mob Farm:
I am going to start off with a "Cavern Mob Farm" this can be used to get most of the materials and loot you want in the game, if you do not know what the cavern layer is; it is located just under the Underground layer and can be easily spotted by the color of the background wall as shown here:
The gray background here is the cavern layer
The reason you want to build this at the start of the cavern layer is that we want to avoid spawns like Tim and Rune Wizard who will ruin our farm, if you're on the Remix Seed or GetFixedBoi variants then your layers will be changed. It would look roughly like this:

(ignore this part on skyblock) First we want to make sure we have a clear space. If you're lucky and happen to get a glowing mushroom biome at the start of the cavern layer then you can actually use this to clear out your mob farm, it is full of mud so it can be easily mined with a gravedigger's shovel and loads of sticky dynamite, if you did not get lucky with a glowing mushroom spawn then you can just simply acquire more sticky dynamite and start going to town, you want to first at least mine a straight line of 168 (overshoot if you wish) and then proceed to mine down. You want to roughly go down around 110-111 blocks, it's okay to give yourself some space here too. At the end you'll have a big square like this:
We're going to start with our stack of 168 and go across, starting on the right side:
Now on the left side we're gonna go down with our 105 stack:
And then across with our stack of 167 to the right:
Lastly using our final stack of 104 you want to go up and connecting the points:
To find the middle you can measure it out like I did with wires, 52 for our spawn range, 3 to compensate for player size and then 51 down:
So to keep things simple but effective we want to start off with where we want our platform to be:
You want to go 86 tiles across with the last 3 tiles placed 1 tile down and then place down a teleporter for easy access to the farm.
I used colored blocks to help see the process, they can all be the same block and to keep enemies in you can just make an invalid platform like shown.
and also make sure to create a 1 way wall for weapons to pass through.
you can add lava here too if it's relevant (special seeds like Don't Dig Up and GetFixedBoi will make enemies not take contact damage from lava). Just make sure to place a block and slope it so the lava doesn't seep down your spawning platform but the trap remains.

You can pretty much end it here, you can make a wall to stop turtles and giant shellys from flying over, add a gnome, water/shadow candle, and a jungle biome to help with spawnrates, but if you want to speed things up then you'd want to go to the advanced farm.

As for wiring you want to actuate the first 30 blocks and hook it to a 1/4 second timer.

If you're having issues with mob clipping it may be worth to change your kill box to this (most notable offender are hornets and sometimes a biome mimic).
As well as changing the platforms back into blocks via blockswap

Final touches include a ceiling and a slope to help enemies (mostly bats) to go into the hoik, just make sure that it doesn't overlap the 26 tiles that are your spawning platform, a water candle/shadow candle for mobs, gnome and torch for luck, some chests with added wiring so they'll collect loot, and a full desert biome including now treacherous sandstone walls to be considered in the underground desert biome.
For the advanced without wiring you're going to follow to the point where after you've sloped all your blocks, you wanna change your layout a bit to look more like this:
hammered slab blocks on top of the first 26 hoiks to trigger basic mimics, a ceiling that is 1 tile taller, and a platform gap to compensate for enemies that will jump above (like slimes)
after which you wanna blockswap everything with platforms of your choosing. This design isn't really meant to be used long-term/post skeletron, even on skyblock now you'll have new access to the dungeon and wiring so you should instead switch to the wiring advanced version. However, I have left in the other bits like the wall under the walkway and the mimic trap just in case you wish to do a no wiring run in which case those will come up.

This one is simple as al you need to do to set this up is add walls to the spawning platform, 78 Treacherous Sandstone Walls will start to spawn underground desert enemies
* Cons of the farm is that currently haven't found a good way to move antlions, they kind of stay stationary even with conveyors in my testing, you can also see I blockswapped the platforms back to blocks, that is because swarmers will behave weirdly (and still do) otherwise.
Sand was illuminant coated to provide clarity.

Nothing special, you can keep the platform hoiks just need to add 1500 snow/ice tiles, enemies from said biome will start to spawn even if you haven't changed the spawning platform, you can still be in the underground desert for their spawnrates.
No big differences asides adding the biome, you should take away 1 tile of snow if you want more jungle enemies like the turtles to spawn, if you want jungle enemies like hornets it is best to use hive block for the spawning platform, if you want trappers then it's best to make an L farm on the surface and farm them there since they don't work well in this type of farm.
Dungeon is tricky as it has a few requirements. To create the biome you need to first be underground (or cavern) and then 2nd have 250 dungeon brick and be in front of cursed dungeon walls (any color). To spawn the enemies, each enemy has a certain wall type that they can spawn behind, in this example I'm just using Cursed Blue Brick which can spawn Paladins. You will see those same cursed walls in the kill chamber, that is to spawn the souls which require also an enemy with at least 100 health. If you are farming ectoplasm it's highly advised to wear a tanky set as well as using a weapon with a stress ball. Turtle armor will do. For the wizards they should generally get insta hoiked into the chamber but the other threat are the skulls, if you have the spider minions place them on the walls below the walkway and they should grapple the skulls as they try to pass under the floor.
For all Crimson, Corruption, and Hallowed you can have the exact same layout, just use the clentaminator to swap between them. The chamber above your person should be able to contain Biome Mimics and prevent them from stomping down on you.
However it prefers the player standing directly under the gap as shown here:
Here are a few examples of souls farms, note that if you want the enemies from these biomes all you need is the tiles on the spawning platform. You do not need the full biome. Crimson and Corruption can both coexist, but they cannot share the same space with Hallowed.
Hallowed (only needs 125 tiles)
Once you're done with these farms you can spray your stone slab back to pure using the clentaminator.

To reiterate, you do not need a hallowed biome, you can completely take Hallowed Mimics out of the pool and just farm chaos elementals, I suggest using a shadow candle to negate their spawn requirements so they just act like regular mobs as well as a bewitching table to give yourself an extra spider minion to deal with enchanted swords (they can still spawn).
