Lava is the most effective way to kill biome mimics while AFK. While it doesn't work in GFB you can use Khaios' design to create a teleporter setup if you're playing on that seed.

Hi,

Sorry. Terraria noob here.

Sorry. Was looking at the post linked at the bottom here. It mentions building a spider farm, jungle biome farm, and cavern level farm all separately. Are there any mobs we might want to farm that aren't on the cavern level? I take it all spider farms are the same? Is there anything we need to be specifically in the jungle to farm? Also, was there a good way to deal with the cursed skulls that keep kicking me off the platform?

Those options aren't for making entirely new farms, it's for how you can modify this one to farm different types of mobs. With how easy it is to change biomes in this game there's no need to dig out a massive area for a completely new farm when you can just change the biome and/or spawning surfaces of your existing farm.

Also, the suggested farms are mainly for later on in the game (hence the suggestion of using turtle armour in the dungeon farm) when there's actually rare drops worth farming for.

Yes, using corrupted/crimson sand walls that are shimmered.

It will make it less efficient having another spawning platform.
Although adding another hoik platform to the right doesn't add more mob since the maximum mob spawn have been reached, wouldn't it be more effective to have two different dungeon wall types, one on the right and one on the left so that you can farm at least two different types of dungeon mobs instead of having to change wall types 3 times? And for the other farms, can't you have one side filled with infested spider walls to encourage spider spawns while the other side can be whatever biome mobs you want equaling farming two different types of mobs at the same time? And is it possible to farm from two different biomes if I introduce the hoik platform to the right? for example, snow biome on the left and jungle on the right, is this possible? Please let me know. Thanks.

Introduction:
With the upcoming changes in 1.4.5 (like hoppers and such) I wanna put out this guide to help players make actually efficient AFK farms. I will be starting with a basic cavern AFK farm and will show other AFK farms at the bottom of the post.

Gathering the Materials:
Separate your block of choice into stacks like this.
View attachment 476010

Making the Farm:
First you want to find a spot to make the farm, I suggest at the very start of the Cavern layer which you can see by a line:

Then you want to start mapping out the farm, we are going to start with the 168 stack and clear out a spot. You can clear out till a straight line, it's fine if you overshoot, then just start placing 168 tiles until you have enough.

Then we're going to go to the left side and dig 92 tiles down, again, it's fine if you overshoot. Then place the 92 stack.

Now we're going to go across 167 and then place the 167 stack.

Lastly for the skeleton we're going to go up 91 blocks.

Now we have to clear out the center, so go ahead and use dynamite, sticky dynamite, drill containment unit, whatever you please.

Next you want to find your middle, if you followed my measurements you can follow this image and place the first block of your 84 stack inbetween.

After you get that you want to place the rest of that 84 stack and create your walkway.

Next we're going to make a "U" shape with the 6, 4, and 11 stacks. Down 6. Across 4. Up 11.
View attachment 476124
Red is 6 down
Blue is 4 across
Green is 11 up

Now from that 11th block we are going to go 33 tiles to the right and 61 to the left. Then make 5 in a zigzag.

and then hammer that zigzag into a ramp

Final Touches:
Now you can stop here and just add lava to the chamber and sit under it with a battle potion, but if you want to add some more efficiency to your farm we are going to move onto the next step which is adding the sand. You can easily get a lot of sand by shimmering ale bought from the tavernkeep.
Doesn't matter too much as long as there isn't any sand offscreen.

The next step is creating a hoik, now take your 2 stacks of 84 blocks and stack them on top of each other, on top of the walkway.

Now hammer them into the following shape

Lastly we want wiring

Now we add the spot where we will stand, which is the platform and all of the amenities.

I did test it out to confirm that it does work. Make sure that you're standing in front of the sandstone walls to be considered inside an underground desert biome, turn the 1 second timer on, and you do not need a water candle for this farm. You do not have to shimmer these walls, it is best leave them to avoid certain desert spawns.

Other Farms:
Place 12 dungeon walls over the sandstone walls, 20 inside the kill chamber, and 78 (26 in 3 layers on the walkway. You also want 78 (26 in 3 layers) on the walkway as well as 250 dungeon bricks near you to create a dungeon biome. Important to note is that you do not need Dungeon Walls at the spawning platform if you do not plan on using slab or tile walls. Any wall will work if you wanna farm with just regular brick. The importance of slab and tile walls can be found here

You're going to want to add a Water Candle since you no longer have the buff from the underground desert, you also want turtle armor and some form of knockback resistance for the souls (if you don't want to farm ectoplasm then don't add the walls into the kill chamber).

You only need 26 Pearlstone Blocks to replace the 26 tiles on the walkway and 99 of any wall to place next to your person, the walls are so you can use Spider Minions to kill any Enchanted Swords.

Don't need a Water Candle for this farm

Just need 300 Crimstone/Ebonstone or 125 Pearlstone and 10 more blocks of your choosing, going to need Treasure Magnet or Hand of Creation
View attachment 477846

Delete the bottom floor and extend it by 5 tiles on each side
View attachment 477839

Add the floor back and lower your afk platform

You cannot use traps in this setup, making lava the only source of killing enemies. Biome mimics will be hoiked in and you will be too far to trigger.

Crimson:

Just need 300 Crimstone/Ebonstone or 125 Pearstone and 26 Infested Spider Walls for the Spiders.
View attachment 476066
You're going to want to first place the Infested Spider Wall behind the spawning platform of your farm, for any farm involving walls you will want the walls to go behind you spawning platform (with the exception being dungeon enemies). Spiders will take up all of the spawns and you won't have to worry about Biome Mimics.

It's fine if you don't see the background change when standing behind the sandstone walls, you're still in the biome, you will still get souls. Also no, this won't corrupt anything.

You're going to follow the same guide until you get to the hoik part then you're going to need 110 platforms, 84 for the 1st layer and 26 for the top layer. You may want to extend the blocker like in the snow farm.

View attachment 476019
Start off like this, then you want to hammer the top platforms 3 times and then blockswap the bottom layer with platforms.

View attachment 476020
should look like this.

View attachment 476823

For a Snow biome you're going to want to delete the barrier and then remake it but longer like shown, you'll have to extend the actuators to match the end of the gate.
View attachment 476824

View attachment 476064
To create a jungle biome you just need 140 jungle grass, hive, or lihzahrd bricks.

View attachment 476062
This is a jungle setup, the jungle part can be designed however you like. If you want to farm either Man Eaters or Jungle Tortoises it's best to do that on the jungle surface itself.

View attachment 476826
alternative setup for jungle that is more compact. You can also make it into layers for farming jungle materials like life fruits and jungle spores.

Conclusion:
While I am rather short on time at the start of making this post, I am open to requests on any other AFK designs. If you have any questions or corrections let me know.

Also credit to zero_rin and ARK | Quasar of the Terraria Discord for helping me to create these. Another Thank you to Kellam Yoshikage for corrections and additional info.
My farm does not seem to be as efficient as it should be... maybe i did someting wrong???

Is it normal for man eaters to spawn on the left in the jungle farm or am I doing something wrong?

I encountered one problem. There are too many brown recluses spawning for some reason. Almost half of the spawns are brown recluses, I did use it as a brown recluse farm at first, and since then they keep producing brown recluses. I triple checked teh spawn area to make sure no infested walls are nearby but they are still being spawned. Is there a way to see where such walls might still? Or any other way to remove them when you don't know if and where they are? I even restarted terraria just to make sure it's not bugged in some way.

I’ve been use this farm for a few days now but I haven’t gotten any desert mobs. It not a huge problem just trying to understand the game a little better I’m fairly new

Hello, thank you the farms insane I was just wondering if you could potentially point me towards an up to date thread on the full technical mechanics of biome stacking or explain it here as I can’t seem to find a thread of what I’m looking for exactly. I personally love learning technical game mechanics but unfortunately there’s not much content that’s easily accessible for Terraria.

The types of questions I’m looking to be answered are the following:

1) Does the sand count as a desert biome for increased spawn rates but without the ability to spawn desert mobs, allowing precise farming of one specific mob spawn criteria without desert mobs effecting efficiency?

2) How far does spawn rate efficiency stack such as Water Candle/Desert/Jungle at one time or is there a cap with this farm limiting you to how fast you can kill mobs thus making any further improvements pointless?

3) Is there potentially a configuration of biome stacking that allows for all biomes (or close to) to be placed within the farm system that can be combined with actuators to enable and disable them at a button press, with the only manual change by hand required being replacing the walls and blocks the mobs spawn on?

Kind regards
Kyo

What is the purpose of putting that many sand? What happens if I don't put them?

The purpose of the sand (and sandstone walls) is to make the game treat the farm as an underground desert biome, which drastically increases the spawn rate. Stuff like sandstone and hardened sand will also work.

But this guide isn't themed around underground desert. And what if I don't want that? What should I do to prevent mobs spawning on that platform?

Underground desert enemies need a spawning surface of sand/sandstone/hardened sand to spawn, so all the biome is doing is increasing the spawn rate with no compromises on the enemy types that spawn in the farm (those are determined mostly by your choice of spawning surface, and sometimes by additional biomes you add). To prevent monsters from spawning on top of the sand, just have the top of it not go off the top of the screen (or be 45+ tiles above the player if on a smaller resolution screen).

The underground desert isn't necessary, but it's a big boost to the efficiency of the farm (and is less time-consuming than the hoik part)

I'm trying to ask about if I don't place any sands how am I supposed to prevent anything spawning here. Do I just put lava?

Edit: I'm an idiot. Nothing can spawn there anyway. But what about the left of it?

Nothing will spawn there since there's a radius around the player where nothing spawns. The sand doesn't change anything about whether monsters can spawn in that area of the farm (since the whole reason for not making the sand too tall is so that the area on top of the sand still lies within the no-spawn range).

Hello,

Thanks for the design.

I have couple questions.

1. I seem to be getting a lot of bat outside of the standing area. Is this expected?

2. I realized that my center area is off by 1 vertically(one too high to be precise). Would I need to fix the center area as a whole? Or would I be fine with lowering the ceiling and the floor by one? I do see some mobs spawning at the bottom as well.

I will attach a world file just in case.

Thanks!

edit/ Sorry I meant upping the ceiling and floor by one.

edit2/ there's also a problem with the bats. If I leave this long enuf, the bats will take entire spawn limit and prevent mobs to spawn to kill chamber. :(

I made the design for the mimics to spawn with the hollowed biome but for some reason they are still aggroing. I am playing with the infernum mod on.

Hey, I built this farm on pre-hardmode, and now im on hardmode, but somehow, when the hallow arrived, it corrupted all of my sand and turn them into hallow sand, what should i do now, the monsters are everywhere, the mimic kept spawning and killed me instantly

Biome mimics are the main reason why I prefer a purely horizontal farm setup. They jump down from above and will hit you if they don't have line of sight. I would recommend a box to catch them in, like in the enemy farming guide on the wiki.

1746968048886.png

As long as you stand with the center of your character below the hole, and at least one side of the hole is hammered to not be a full square, enemies in the box can see you. When a biome mimic stomps down, it can't go through blocks if it can see you, so it gets stopped. Make sure to not let skeleton archers into this box, though.
