I think the fruit probably came first.
Because, humans often name colors after stuff they see, and if you see a lot of some fruit you call an orange and given that there aren't always a lot of orange things to encounter, at least compared to other things,then you would probably regard any orange object as being the same color as an orange so it would be easier just to have that be a color.

No clue if that's even close to right but it'd make some sense.
 
I was going to ask if I could pet you, but after the first page I think it's better to ask if petting you less lethal than using your tails as pillows.

Interesting... That would explain why red fox and red squirrel are called red even though they're clearly orange. I just thought whoever named them was color blind, using old English definitions, or just stupid. The later two would also explain the red bellied woodpecker's name. It IS red, but the red is on the back of its head instead of its belly.
