Depends on the severity of the unsolvability. For example if there is a duplicated piece, I can tell that its unsolvable just by looking at it. If there is a twisted corner/edge then it's pretty difficult to tell that its unsolvable. It's possible to tell, just requires a bunch of permutation and orientation math. But they become very obvious towards the end of the solve at which point I'd just twist em back or solve it as is with one piece twisted.
You forgot about the "can't sell or give away" part that makes the question interesting but I'll act like you haven't .
I guess I could hold some sort of competition among an entire nation. Millions of cubes mean a lot of storage space though. I don't know how to deal with that.

Definitely math, you can still do science without math. I just physically can't handle superstition. By the way, what do we consider math here? There are fields in mathematics that don't use any numbers. Do they count?
