Strange issue that started randomly happening where auto select does not work properly.

When you hold the button and hover over a tile it correctly makes you hold the associated item, however when you press left click to place/use it reverts back to your initially selected hotbar slot.
so for example i am holding a pickaxe but want to cut a tree with auto select, when i press auto select with the cursor hovering above the tree tile it correctly makes me hold the axe and shows the axe icon beside the cursor, but when i click i instead use the pickaxe

im on PC on the latest version, i have uninstalled an reinstalled and verified integrity of the game files, its very annoying and i dont know what to do. It affects both base game and TmodLoader versions

video recording of the problem
I'm trying to place torches, cut the tree and mine dirt but i can't, notice auto select working properly up until i click

Could you share both your config.json and your input profiles.json files? Both can be found in Documents/My Games/Terraria. :)

Based on this, am I right when I say you hold Mouse4 to toggle auto select and then click to use your item?

How consistently does this issue happen?

I do use mouse4 for auto select, at first i thought that might have been the issue but changing back to shift doesn't fix it

The issue happens every single time since my first launch in a while last week, last time i played before that was during summer vacation. I assume there must have been a small update since then that is causing this

Apologies for the wait.

We have not released an update to Terraria since the last summer, so it seems more likely that something changed on your side. I can also not reproduce your issue with the provided configuration files, unfortunately. Did you change anything on your end?

After seeing your message I started messing around and found the cause of the issue, it being using mouse4. Like i said earlier, changing it back to shift manually didn't fix anything, what fixed it was pressing the 'reset to defaults' in the controls menu.
Once I did that auto select started behaving normally again, however when I tried remapping it back to mouse4 (I find it more comfortable) the issue came back. After that I tried verifying integrity of game files and remapping it to other keys and all of them work correctly except for mouse4 which is very weird because I have always used mouse4 for auto select ever since I bought the game on PC and this started occurring randomly.
For now I have mapped it to mouse5 but I guess the issue is not 100% resolved, I don't know if this is a bug or what.

That's strange. Could I ask you to go to this mouse test site, press Mouse4 and then left click, and see if the Mouse4 button still lights up when you do so? It could be that your LMB is overriding your Mouse4.

It happens exactly how you say, thanks for figuring out what was wrong! What can I do to fix it? Like I said earlier, this didn't happen before. Sorry for bothering you with something kinda unrelated to the game.

I think this site doesn't quite represent what a native windows application would be able to receive in terms of input events. On the site, pressing and holding mouse4 (or 5) and then clicking once with mouse1 supposedly releases mouse4 even if it is still pressed, but when testing the same in a native windows app, the correct inputs are observed (m4 down, m1 down, m1 up, m1 down, m1 up, m4 up).

That would depend on whether this is an issue with your mouse or an issue with how your computer handles its input. Do you have a spare mouse you could test with?

Mouse4 + LMB works for me on the site - I would not have recommended it without testing it myself -, which is also consistent with how Terraria interprets my inputs (which is why I couldn't reproduce the issue to begin with). While this could indeed be a false negative, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume these results are accurate if they are consistent for the control group (i.e. me) and if they explain why this user is experiencing the issue that they are.

I don't have a spare mouse to test with, but I have had this mouse for years and has always worked correctly previously (if you remember this started happening randomly) so I would say it's an issue with the computer maybe due to an update.

I see, in that case it may indeed be some sort of setting that is interfering with your mouse. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know what to suggest to fix this, all I can recommend on the Terraria end is that for the time being you may have to assign Auto-Select to a different key. :(

Have you tried the mouse test website I mentioned above? What were your results?
