The auto select only selects either a glowstick or a torch but if it were to select say rod of discord it would be very handy for tough bossfights like daytime Empress of Light or a harder modded boss.

Currently, auto-select has a wide variety of things it can select. You can see the full list here. I think the specific example you've given, being the Rod of Discord, is not something that should be auto-selected, because generally it's more useful to auto-select a torch or glowstick, and coding in exceptions would probably be more trouble than it's worth.
