I think it has to do with how the game treats painted doors. When it becomes 1D (closed), it can only hold one color property per tile (and it's made of top, middle, and bottom tiles). When you open the door, it becomes 2D, and can only keep the properties that its 1D state possesses.

If you have half the door painted like that, then when it becomes 1D (closed), maybe it's checking some kind of average state, or checks the left side first? Maybe try painting the left side of the door instead, and see what happens?

If that remains the case, then sadly you can only paint the door in horizontal stripes, not vertical.

All I know is, the reason I know it's SOMETHING like the above explanation is... if you close the door, then paint it, then open it, then the whole door is painted all the way across. And you've only needed 3 uses of paint to do it, instead of the 6 it would take to paint it when it's open! :dryadeek: (A way to save paint, at least.)

this is intended, as tiles that can be changed and vary the amount of tiles taken to show it (like opening and closing a door) the paint will only stay on the tiles that the door hinges to, and as @ZaCloud mentioned, its easier to just paint the door while it is closed, as it keeps the paint on the door for good (and it consumes less paint, meaning less money wasted on paint)

Hah, you worded that MUCH better than I could, thank you for the easier-to-understand explanation.
