Game Mechanics Be able to choose your class when creating you character

I think when you make a new character you should be able to choose your class and you'd get a different weapon depending on which class you choose like with melee you would just get a copper short sword and with ranger you would get a wooded bow

That would be cool to choose which class starter weapon you get

you could also add a copper/iron whip and a copperling/ironling summon for summoners

Terraria is not a class based game, but rather a game  with classes. Believe it or not there's quite a big difference. I don't like the idea of adding a "select a class" feature to the game, as it will make new players feel like it is a class based game. I feel like this would overall be negative, as the intended point is to play through the game, find out what you like, and go from there.
Furthermore, starting with anything aside from the copper shortsword would provide you with a very noticeable advantage, as everything that doesn't have better damage, has better attack patterns (with the wooden hammer for example, the overhead arch).

Overall, for the reasons listed above, I do not support this suggestion.

Yeah, this pretty much explains all of it. I agree with Noobiescrubpleb completely.

I personally think this idea could work if the choice was presented as “choose your starting weapon” instead of “choose your class.” There would also have to be a note explaining that the choice isn’t permanent and the starting weapons would have to be equally bad. I have my own post that explains how I would implement this…

However, when Redigit was asked about this idea he gave a pretty definite “no.” It’s probably for the reasons @Noobiescrubpleb brought up and because pure class playthroughs aren’t the intended way to play. But hey, maybe we could see a sort of class selection in Terraria 2!

yeah... it's an alright Idea, but many other people have made a point already. it is optional to play with a specific class, and making it necessary to pick ONE kinda ruins the freedom of the game. I like having my class and weapons abruptly swap from mage with last prism to melee with Zenith, not be stuck on one.

I get from where this suggestion is coming from, but i think that all what needs to be done to fix "problem single class progression gap" at the beggining of the game is to add easly optainable weapons, you start with short sword and wood bow is one chopped tree away
i'd make wand of sparkling craftable with some torches and wood at the demon/crimson altar
and finch staff craftable using living wood/leaf staff and a bird of any type
