Junge armor and meteorite armor are usually compared to see which is the best pre hardmode armor. This choice is extremly important because the gap from pre hardmode to hardmode is very big.
The thing is none of those armor sets are the best because of their weaknesses
Meteorite armor is only good with space gun and jungle armor s offensive bonuses are not good enough. There is an alternative which many people don t know about and that is the wizard set. It requires a magic hat or a wizard hat and a mystic robe or a gem robe.
With the wizard hat you ll get a set bonus of 10% critical strike chance which already gave you 5% magical damage.
With the magical hat you ll get a set bonus of 60 mana and it already gave you 6% critical strike chane and 6% magical damage.
The diamond robe is the best gem robe and only gives you 80 mana and 17% mana cost reduction.
The mystic robe gives you 6% critical strike chance, 6% increased magical damage and 10% mana cost reduction
The mystic robe and the magical hat combined are very good because you ll get 12% critical strike chance and magical damage, 10% reduced mana cost and 60 mana.You will get a lot offensive bonuses and some mana from this combo making it the best. For the last slot you should use the jungle pants.
In conclusion mystic robe+magical hat+jungle pants is the best pre hardmode mage armor for mana and offensive bonuses. Note that it will only give you 10 deffence which is low but deffence can be easily increased with accessory moddifiers and isn t very important. Also you ll need to be lucky to get the magical hat and mystic robe from the travelling merchant but it doesn t require a lot of time because you can do whatever you want while you wait for the merchant to visit you.
