Sprites Bigger Sprites for Resource Packs

I'm not sure how many times something similar to this has been suggested, but seeing as it's still a problem, I figure it'd be worth a try to ask again. I know Labor of Love is already out and all that, but this change would be massive for resource pack authors and allow us so much more freedom to be creative and expressive in our packs.

The issue in question is that sprite replacements in resource packs must be the exact same size as the originals in order to load. I assume this was done for a reason possibly related to hitboxes or something like that, but I just can't wrap my head around it. With the game's sprites being so tightly cropped, it's such a heavy restriction that makes it impossible to create original designs for items like coins.

The way I see it, you could just hardcode the hitboxes while letting the sprites themselves be completely independent, even if it causes some visual inconsistencies. That would at least make it up to the resource pack author to decide whether they want to sacrifice either hitbox accuracy or detail. As of now, you're forced to choose the latter.

I cannot possibly overstate how much of a big change this would be for resource packs. Being able to work past the restrictions placed by how tiny certain sprites are would allow people so much more room to make resource packs that are actually unique. I personally wanted to make a Mario resource pack that changes the coins to look like those from the series and was immediately stopped in my tracks by this feature.

If you don't remove this restriction altogether then please at least consider adding some empty space on the edges of the smaller sprites. It would be less than ideal, but it'd be better than what we have now.

aint the sprites like 2x size for everything?
I am like 100% sure you can do the mario coins in there

the sprites are 2x size for HD resource packs.
if you replace the copper coin with a sprite that isn't 2x size, you technically have more room for detail but the sprite is equally as small in-game. dynamic sprite sizes are what i'm after.

vanilla sprite on the left with a quick pack i did on the right for comparison. the canvases are the exact same size.

bumping this with some of my thought process behind how these changes could be implemented

Why is this NOT supported already??

Feels like people are just gonna complain about weapons and enemy hitboxes being inaccurate
its a cool idea and if it happens, that would be awesome, but i dont find it neccecary as i personally have managed to work around the sprite scales pretty well

i addressed this in the image you're quoting. inaccurate hitboxes are already fully possible with what resource packs currently allow

what i mean is thet people would probably complain that the innacurate hitboxes would mess the game up (unless its a meme pack lol)
