Here's my proposition for some alternate types of play.

Challenge Mode: You play through various pre made stages using only the items and equipment given to you from the start, there would be four difficulty types.
Copper Stages- You have these from the start
Silver Stages- Unlocked after a Mechanical Boss is defeated
Gold Stages- Unlocked after the Golem is defeated
Platinum Stages- Unlocked after the Moonlord is defeated

Example- A stage gives you 20 wood, and you have to perfectly time where and when to place each block to reach the goal.

Challenge Mode II: In this mode, you play as the NPCs rather than a player character, unlike the character in Challenge Mode, each character will have the same set of items for every stage you play as them, you can only play as characters that arrived in one of your worlds, it also has the four difficulty types from Challenge Mode.

Example- You're playing as the Steampunker, your only weapon is the Clockwork Assault Rifle, you can use the Jetpack to fly around, and you have the static hook, stages are build around these items, in harder stages, you can upgrade from regular musket balls, to High Velocity Bullets, as well as replacing the Jetpack with the Steampunk Wings. Upon clearing every stage, you can talk with her in one of your worlds, and a new item becomes available.

Endless Dungeon: In this mode, you have to fight your way through countless micro worlds until you're defeated, each world awards you a random chest when completed.

I believe what could make this even more interesting is bosses that can only be fought in these modes exclusively, and a new NPC that appears in your world that can transfer special items won from playing these to your world.

I await your opinions and feedback.

This is confusing. Could you edit the main post to explain better?

Terraria is a finite world, this would need to be procedurally generated.
