Game Mechanics Challenge Modes

Snickerbobble

The Painter
(This suggestion was made before the implementation of Expert Mode)

I've only seen difficulty threads that suggest increasing enemy damage and defense, decrease player damage and defense for hard, and the reverse for easy. No please! It only makes something take a few more hits (AKA tedium) or less hits to defeat. I've thought of some different changes to increase difficulty: give enemies and bosses new moves and abilities, make them faster, and make them less predictable, as well as killing off exploits. This is a lot to read, so feel free to skip to Expert/Master for the more interesting changes.

Challenge modes

Challenge modes are a world setting. Much like how you pick Softcore, Midcore, and Hardcore at character creation, you would have the options of Easy, Normal, Expert, and Master at world creation. Most changes effect the world, but some world settings change the amount of accessories that can be worn. When entering a world that allows less accessories than you have equipped, the last one or two slots will become locked until you enter a world that allows use of these accessories.

Easy (The least interesting, but for those who struggle with normal mode. Also great for building worlds.)

Drops
Hearts are 25% more common.
Bosses drop bronze trophies. (100% chance first drop, 20% chance after.)

Shop
Items are at 75% normal price. (to let players purchase things sooner. All modes after this have normal prices)

Buffs and Potions
Last 50% longer
Ironskin buffs by 12 defense
Lifeforce increases max health by 40%
Lesser Healing Potion heals for 60 HP, Healing Potion heals for 120 HP, and Greater Healing Potion heals for 180 HP.

Biome spread
Much slower and only spreads to one block away in hardmode.

Enemies
Fighter AIs are all basic, none of them lunge at you when close.
Flying enemies have much wider turns, making them fly around you more than swooping at you.
Burrowing enemies have less digging power, making them unable to reach you if there are any small caves in the way sometimes.
Ranged enemies have longer delays between shots and are less accurate.
Casters behave like they do now.

Bosses (generally slower and less interesting.)
Eye of Cthulhu summons more servants, but at a slower rate, giving the player more chances at hearts. Spends twice as long spinning when entering second form. It lunges slower and only two times before pulling back.
Eater of Worlds will have less digging power and have 0 defense to its head, making it slightly easier to mow down without splitting up. Less likely to constrict around you.
Brain of Cthulhu will have less creepers. It will teleport much slower and keep its distance from the player every time it appears, giving the player more time to react to its new position. It is more effected by knockback in second form.
Skeletron.. The Old Man would back away from you before exploding into Skeletron. The arms would move much slower while swiping and while holding back, making them easier to dodge and hit.
King Slime is fine as is, it's usually too easy by the time you fight it.
Queen Bee's lunges are slower and less common. Only spawns bees that fly slower. She won't fire any poison stingers. Spends more time in the open and not staying back behind blocks.
Wall of Flesh has less hungries that do not lunge. The Wall moves a lot slower. Its lasers are less frequent. You do not get the Horrified debuff, so you can mirror away and survive.
The Twins are slower, projectiles are less frequent and less accurate. Transforms at 33% health and spends twice the time transforming, like EoC. Retinazer doesn't rapid shoot and Spazmatism doesn't breathe fire.
Destroyer releases Probes and Damaged Probes which are unable to shoot and can only ram. Normal Probes will fire less often. Destroyer is effected by most debuffs. Less likely to constrict around you.
Skeletron Prime only has the Prime Laser and Prime Cannon which move slower, as well as the head.
Plantera doesn't shoot its pink spiky balls. Has less eaters in second form and is only slightly faster than its first form.
Golem will be how it was back in 1.2, but fireballs despawn after 3 bounces.
Duke Fishron will be much slower, less lunges, sharknadoes are smaller, and less sharkons spawn and are more delayed.

Normal (The current game.)

Drops
Bosses drop silver trophies. (100% chance first drop, 20% chance after. Current trophies will become silver.)

Shop
Normal prices.

Buffs and Potions
Normal effects.

Biome spread
Slightly slower spread and up to two blocks away in hardmode.

Enemies
Most enemies are how they are now.
Casters fire slightly more often and teleport any mob with them that happens to be occupying their space.

Bosses (Pretty much the same as now.)
Eater of Worlds will have more defense in its head to make splitting easier. Health buff to all segments. Let it suddenly burrow away if caught being mowed down for more than 3 seconds. Single segments can survive on their own.
Brain of Cthulhu will warp with more distance between players so it won't warp on you or a couple blocks away.
Skeletron.. The Old Man would back away from you before exploding into Skeletron. Will roll a little faster and enter an endless roll when both arms are gone.
King Slime will spawn pinky-sized blue slimes called Royal Slimes that wear little crowns. The slimes can fit through 1 block holes and will toss noclipping crowns at those who box up to prevent exploitation.
The Twins will transform at 50% health, like EoC.

Expert

Drops
Hearts are 25% less common, 50% less common from servants of cthulhu, creepers, bees, and probes.
Bosses drop gold trophies. (100% chance first drop, 20% chance after.)

Shop
Normal prices.

Buffs and Potions
Ironskin buffs by 6 defense.
Lesser Healing Potion heals for 40 HP, Healing Potion heals for 80 HP, and Greater Healing Potion heals for 120 HP.

Biome spread
How it is now. Sunflowers will block Crimson.

Enemies
Slimes can combine into bigger, stronger slimes. A few exceptions made for some like mother and baby slimes.
Fighter AIs and other walkers are more diverse. They can jump on each other making small walls useless against a big group of mobs, and can all open doors even if not blood moon. Zombies can spawn on screen, rising from the dead out of the ground. Skeletons can throw bones at you. Chaos Elementals can warp rapidly to confuse you. Goblins will use rocket boots, harpoons, and spiky balls.
Flying enemies have sharper turns, allowing for more accurate hits.
Burrowing enemies have more digging power and now have health per segment like they used to. For example, dealing 200 damage to all bone serpent segments will leave it alive, until you deal 50 more damage to one of its segments. Healthbars only visible when not inside any blocks.
Ranged enemies have more accuracy
Casters will teleport all enemies within a 5 block radius with them.

Bosses
Eye of Cthulhu summons servants with 12 HP so they're not insta-kill free hearts. It will lunge faster and at different speeds to throw you off, and won't always lunge the same amount of times to be less predictable. Transforms at 66% health and doesn't lose defense in second form.
Eater of Worlds will have more digging power and more health. Head will have more defense to cause splitting. Every segment must be destroyed, so single segments can survive on their own. Destroyed segments will leave behind a green acid that will harm upon touching and will slowly vanish after about 5 seconds.
Brain of Cthulhu will have more creepers. It will teleport slightly more often and closer to the player. It is immune to knockback.
Skeletron.. The Old Man will instantly explode into Skeletron upon selecting Curse. The head and arms will move much faster, swiping more quickly and have a new clap attack. It will roll faster with no drop in defense. When both arms are destroyed, it becomes similar to Dungeon Guardian and will home in on you nonstop, however it is heavily effected by knockback. It would be like battling a stronger Enchanted Sword.
King Slime will spawn pinky-sized blue slimes called Royal Slimes that wear little crowns. The slimes can fit through 1 block holes and will toss noclipping crowns at those who box up to prevent exploitation. King Slime will leap much higher and do a spin every few hops, causing normal blue slimes to fly out of it as well.
Queen Bee will have Faster/slower lunges and inconsistent amounts of them, like EoC. Will summon killer bees instead of normal bees. If she dips into honey, she will begin to heal.
Wall of Flesh: Has more hungries with longer reach. Hungries can latch onto you and drag you into the mouth for massive damage. The Wall will travel faster and will spawn from the direction that gives you the least amount of room.
The Twins.. Spaz's fire balls have weak homing. Both eyes transform at 66% health and Retinazer will switch between its rapid laser attack and giant laser attack, a laser nearly as wide as the eye. Spaz's lunges are similar to EoC's, but faster and lunges further.
Destroyer will break apart like Eater of Worlds. Segments will use rocket thrusters to reach those who fly too high.
Skeletron Prime's arms are quicker and will roll much faster. It will fire its spikes out repeatedly while spinning which will noclip through blocks. Prime Laser fires giant lasers as wide as its laser cannon, Prime Vice will snatch you and do continuous damage until you hit it at least 5 times. Prime Cannon will fire bigger bombs with bigger explosions, which can also hit you in mid-air. Prime Saw will give you the Bleeding debuff.
Plantera will be much faster, fires more spiky balls, and transforms at 75% HP. Continues firing spiky balls in second form and the eaters will leave behind spore clouds that inflict you with Venom.
Golem's fists cannot be damaged. Fire balls will despawn after 20 bounces. Golem will drop lihzarhd spiky balls every time it is hit. When its head is floating, it will fire giant balls of flame down below.
Duke Fishron's sharknadoes will remain for a minute before despawning, while continuously spewing out sharkrons. Bubbles will try to spiral around you, making them much harder to pop. Duke transforms at 50% HP and will transform into a third stage at 25%. At this stage, sharknadoes will remain for 3 minutes and bubbles are made of lead and require more hits to pop.

Master (Only the best allowed!)

Drops
Hearts are non-existent. (Or alternatively, as common as Hard, but enemies can pick them up and be healed.)
Bosses drop platinum trophies. (100% chance first drop, 20% chance after.)

Shop
Normal prices.

Buffs and Potions
Ironskin buffs by 6 defense but decreased movement speed by 10%.
Waterwalking will not work on lava.
Lifeforce increases max HP by 10%
Lesser Healing Potion heals for 25 HP, Healing Potion heals for 50 HP, and Greater Healing Potion heals for 75 HP.

Biome spread
The same as Hard, as even further spread isn't really challenging.

Enemies
Same as Hard, but maxspawns are up by 25%.

Bosses
Eye of Cthulhu summons demon eyes instead of servants. It will lunge faster and at different speeds to throw you off, and won't always lunge the same amount of times to be less predictable. Transforms at 75% health and gains defense in second form. It will lunge non-stop as well.
Eater of Worlds will have more digging power and more health. Head will have more defense to cause splitting. Every segment must be destroyed, so single segments can survive on their own. Destroyed segments will leave behind a green acid that will harm upon touching and will slowly vanish after about 10 seconds. When half the segments are defeated, it will start summoning devourers for every segment defeated (no devourer drops). Defeated segments will only drop demonite and shadowscales will only drop when the boss is defeated.
Brain of Cthulhu will have more creepers that only drop crimtane. You must defeat the brain to recieve any tissue samples. It can teleport right next to you. The boss is immune to knockback and will transform when half of its creepers are defeated.
Skeletron.. The Old Man will instantly explode into Skeletron upon clicking on him, no warning at all. The head and arms will move much faster, swiping more quickly and have a new clap attack. It will roll faster with no drop in defense. Arms will remain when "defeated," but become damaged. They become weaker, but cannot be harmed further. When both arms are damaged, it becomes similar to Dungeon Guardian and will home in on you nonstop.
King Slime will spawn pinky-sized blue slimes called Royal Slimes that wear little crowns. The slimes can fit through 1 block holes and will toss noclipping crowns at those who box up to prevent exploitation. King Slime will leap much higher and do a spin every few hops, causing normal purple, red, and yellow slimes to fly out of it as well. King Slime will stun you when it lands after a flip, but only if you are on the ground.
Queen Bee will have faster/slower lunges and differing amounts of them, like EoC. Will summon hornets instead of normal bees. If she dips into honey, she will begin to heal. Stingers will noclip and inflict Venom.
Wall of Flesh has more hungries with longer reach. Hungries can latch onto you and drag you into the mouth for massive damage. The Wall will travel faster and even moreso when weaker and will spawn from the direction that gives you the least amount of room. Hungries will regenerate over time. The mouth will fire a giant laser beam, making any blocks it touches into hot blocks for the duration of the battle, so hot that obsidian stuff will not protect you from them (so this makes runways deadly.)
The Twins.. Spaz's fire balls have stronger homing. Both eyes transform at 75% health and Retinazer will switch between its rapid triple laser attack and giant laser attack, a laser nearly as wide as the eye. Spaz's lunges are similar to EoC's, but faster and lunges further. Spaz can chomp you and hold you down for continuous damage until 500 damage is dealt to it. Lasers that touch blocks become hot for the rest of the battle like Wall of Flesh's.
Destroyer will break apart like Eater of Worlds. Segments will use rocket thrusters to reach those who fly too high. Probes will a long laser trail rather than shots. Lasers that touch blocks become hot for the rest of the battle like Wall of Flesh's.
Skeletron Prime's arms are quicker and will roll much faster. It will fire its spikes out repeatedly while spinning which will noclip through blocks. Prime Laser fires giant lasers as wide as its laser cannon. Lasers that touch blocks become hot for the rest of the battle like Wall of Flesh's. Prime Vice will snatch you and do continuous damage until you hit for at least 200 damage. Prime Vice will also snatch blocks and toss them at you, trying to trap you within (these blocks despawn after about a minute and re-appear where they came). Prime Cannon will fire bigger bombs with bigger explosions, which can also hit you in mid-air. The bombs will blow holes in terrain, wrecking arenas (will repair themselves after the battle). Prime Saw will give you the Bleeding debuff.
Plantera will be much faster, fires more spiky balls, and transforms at 75% HP. Continues firing spiky balls in second form and the eaters will leave behind spore clouds that inflict you with Venom. It will spew a purple acid on blocks that remain for a minute which will also inflict Venom as well as a heavy burn.
Golem's fists cannot be damaged. Fire balls will not despawn unless shot off screen, with a max of 10 being allowed before it stops firing them. Golem will drop lihzarhd spiky balls every time it is hit. When its head is floating, it will fire giant balls of flame down below. Its fists can slam down on you if the fist punches too high.
As you battle, a giant Tsunami will chase you. Getting caught in this will do a steady 50 damage, so you need to keep moving!

So... thoughts?

I didn't read absolutely all of it, mostly because Expert mode is really a thing so the suggestion at least to some sort of degree is already confirmed but

Brain of Cthulhu will have more creepers that only drop crimtane. You must defeat the brain to recieve any tissue samples. It can teleport right next to you. The boss is immune to knockback and will transform when half of its creepers are defeated.

Are you insane? Just thinking about how I'd ever beat this makes me shudder, and the only answer I even could fathom working is "fish up a reaver shark and skip it"

Heh, well for this idea it's mostly the behaviors of enemies/bosses that are effected. I'm guessing health might be raises a little bit, but it's not intended to be one of those "it's hard because it has a billion health" suggestions.

I feel the bosses shouldn't be skipable, and sorta disagree with how you can obtain shadowscales/tissue samples in normal play *shrug*. Reaver Shark could use some rebalancing I think. I haven't actually tried it out but I hear it's better than Molten in terms of mining speed with same power.

The mighty wall of text has awoken!

Made some small changes. Interesting to read this over now that we have an Expert mode. There are some similarities, but some differences, as expected.

I'd like to see some ideas here used for the bosses that didn't really get an expert upgrade, such as Wall of Flesh and the Mechs, as well as enemies that are just the same with more health and damage.

Awesome ideas. I support that, but don't place it instead of softcore, mediumcore or hardcore, but add to a world generation as well as current Normal and Expert mode. And I have a suggestion for Master Brain of Cthulhu. As someone already said don't make Creepers don't drop Tissue Samples, but make them drop less. Also Brain will spawn Creepers making the fight harder. Other suggestion: change current AI of Creepers. Currently they try to charge at you. On Master they will try to fly around you and push into the Brain to deal massive damage.

The fact that this was last edited in 2015, as well as the new hardest gamemode being added..

I'm still not entirely convinced you don't work for Re-Logic in some capacity.
