Terraria: Otherworld Changing of the Guard: An Update from Otherworld

Considering how confident things sounded in Otherworld updates long past, I'd assume there had to be some progress made. I mean, at one point they had a planned release in 2015. I doubt such an announcement would have been made if there was never much progress made at all.

Personally, I assume a lot of stuff got done, but as it all came together, it just wasn't working out. Bugs and glitches proving hard to iron out, perhaps performance issues that weren't going away, that sort of thing. Or maybe basic design aspects weren't working together in unanticipated ways, and it was an endless cycle of changing A to make it work with B right, but then that meant A and C didn't fit anymore, and so on. Plus, maybe once enough basic design aspects were implemented to really test the gameplay that emerged from it all, it just wasn't fun.

In any case, be it all or some of those problems that caused the reevaluation, I'd imagine Pipeworks made significant progress in terms of building all the pieces, thus that old 2015 release forecast. But then once it was really time to put it all together, to see if the ideas and plans were working as envisioned, the pieces just weren't fitting. That can happen in practically any adequately complex project. And at that point, even if in theory you have 90% of everything made, if it isn't coming together, you might have to totally redesign and remake some or all of the pieces. Otherwise a bunch of relatively finished individual parts are no good regardless of how well they perform their own specific function, if they can't be unified into one stable, enjoyable game.

As such I'd say it's entirely likely that Pipeworks made a lot of progress, AND that stuff won't be used now. Otherworld would by no means be the first game to have most of the work done and then just start over entirely, such a combination has plenty of precedent. Without knowing more of what was going on behind the scenes and what ultimately made Re-Logic decide they didn't like what was being made, most any scenario is possible.
I think you meant 'Engine Software' in the two places that you said 'Pipeworks'.

I've done some research since my last post and they did seem far in development, but they didn't seem happy with the way it was going. I would like to say they kept a lot of the base game's coding, but it's possible they trashed it.

Just a heads up, they said the game isn't being started over completely again. It is just being re-evaluated. They have all the code and art, and if they have code and art that works and doesn't need to be changed, im sure it won't be.

我爱这个游戏 但是我有点等不及了 加油!!
hai, totemo desu ne

Sorry about that, I had nothing to answer. I hope I don't come off as obnoxious or anything, but would you mind sticking to English around these parts? I don't know if we are supposed to, but it sure is more convenient for most people.

游戏还没有准备好,我们不知道多久可能是因为游戏还在运行测试,因为我们不确定100%的游戏将在几个月内完成。

Anyway, lets hope the game come out good.

Just a heads up, they said the game isn't being started over completely again. It is just being re-evaluated. They have all the code and art, and if they have code and art that works and doesn't need to be changed, im sure it won't be.

There's no doubt they have the existing art and code, but having it doesn't necessarily mean using it. Whats gets reused and what gets tossed is all a matter of how off-track Otherworld was, if it was bad enough and/or the Re-Logic's goals changed enough since it was started, they might decide it's best to just start from scratch entirely. With the minimal information publicly available, (checking Pipeworks' page didn't add anything either, by the way,) we on the outside can only guess. I would sure hope the code's still usable though, since that'll surely speed things up, and would further imply that other overall game design work is more likely to be usable. However, as I said before, I do hope they redo all the art, just because I was hoping for overall resolution to increase more than going from about 24 pixels tall to about 30 pixels tall on standard player sprites.

Now with that said, anybody want to guess how long it'll be until we get further news? The initial announcement sounded like Pipeworks and Re-Logic had yet to "examine the entire game, from top to bottom" and that can take a while. Furthermore, Pipeworks page doesn't appear to be significantly staffing up right now either, which doesn't lead me to believe they're close to starting full-on development yet. So with the review probably still deep in progress and Re-Logic probably very much not wanting to ever jump the gun on any more Otherworld announcements again, I'd say we're looking at another month of quiet, easy. Possibly several. (Hopefully making this prediction for all to see will help ensure I'm proven horribly, embarrassingly wrong, but that never seems to work when you want it to.)

I just got news call form old youtube about month ago

Umm...I hope this doesn't cause issue in your project, and I just looking forward the game still come out still. I'll still throw money in still.

I like the artwork and some of that gameplay looks really good. It doesn't look really tight though, I wonder if the controls and worldgen were wonky.
Anyway I hope this ends up being an amazing game....whenever it comes out...

Let the hype train start! Can't wait to see what all comes from this.

Good Day, Terrarians-

We wanted to take a few moments to share some important news with you all in regards to the status of Terraria: Otherworld.

As you all know from when we first announced the game a good while back, Re-Logic’s focus has and always will be on delivering complete and quality game experiences to our fanbase. This means that we will not compromise game quality for speed to market or for any other reasons within our control. Our team had a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, as much as we hate to say it (and in spite of all of the reforms we tried last year) - the current state of the game is still equal parts far from that vision and well behind schedule.

As a result, we have made the decision to move on from having Engine Software continue development of Terraria: Otherworld. Re-Logic has possession of the game (code, art, sounds, etc.) as it exists today, and we have been examining the array of options available to us to get TOW to a place to where we can confidently deliver on the vision and expectations we all have for this game. After taking a good hard look at everything, we feel that a new and fresh start/direction is the only way Otherworld will ever reach its full potential at this point.

So, where does TOW head from here? The great news is that we already have a dedicated and passionate team ready to pick up the torch and continue the Otherworld journey! Based upon their really impressive work to-date with the Terraria re-write on Console/Mobile, coupled with an amazingly on-point proposal for completing Otherworld (after a thorough review of the game on their end), we have made the decision to bring Pipeworks on board as our new development partner for Terraria: Otherworld!

We know that the "radio silence" and all of the shifting development work aimed at continuing the journey for Terraria: Otherworld has been frustrating for a lot of you. It isn’t a happy or easy call for us either – however, we feel strongly that we owe it to our community and loyal customers to uphold the standards that both you and we expect and to focus on delivering the best possible games that we can for you all to play. The length of the silence was purely driven by "these things take time to occur and then set up" coupled with our desire to have an actual solution/path forward before just sharing the news about Engine.

Come whatever may, quality is simply not something we are willing to compromise on to make a quick buck. It may be painful in the short term, but our sincere hope is that it will pay off for everyone in the long term. Clearly, had we known this would be the scenario way back then, we would have held off on announcing the game until a later time - but such is game development. That said, we are really happy and confident with the new team and new plan - and cannot wait to get back on track.

Some quick details/questions that you may have:

  • Scope: We will be working with Pipeworks to examine the entire game, from top to bottom, to see how it fits with our high expectations and core vision for this project.
  • Timing: As we know more about the specifics of timing, etc and/or have fresh spoilers to share, we absolutely will - though expect the "quiet period" to go on just a bit longer while Pipeworks gets ramped up and we actually have new things to show.
  • Impact on other work: Pipeworks will staff up appropriately so that the Otherworld workload does not have any impact on the timing/quality of the Terraria 1 Console/Mobile/Switch launch
  • Other Changes: We will be doing a full refresh of all of the Otherworld public-facing locations (Website/Twitter/Facebook/etc.) - including a revamp of the logo itself  As these are completed, we will be sure to let you know so that you can check things out!

Thanks so much to you all for your amazing support of Terraria, Terraria: Otherworld, and our company. It is that support that drives us every day to do amazing things for you and we look forward to sharing more of what is to come very soon.

We are sure that you have a ton of questions, and we will answer what we can – but we will not delve into some areas out of either respect or confidence or the unknown. So we will ask your patience and forgiveness in advance there.

Thanks!
I understand that the final price has yet to be set but do you as of now have general range of where about it will sit? I know Terraria sits at about $9, where should I save to so I'm ready for when Otherworld drops? Somewhere in the $10-15 range, $20-30......? If you don't know thats fine, I just don't have a steady way of making money and so saving will take a WHILE so I wanna get started right away
