Terraria: Otherworld Changing of the Guard: An Update from Otherworld

Hello Otherworld developers. I would like to say thank you for the news on how Otherworld is going and I would like to throw an idea out there that may deeply help the development of Otherworld. I would highly suggest a alpha launch of this to the public for multiple reasons. One of them is about any new feature of Otherworld, if you go to deeply into a new feature that players don't like you can quickly get rid of it before to much effort goes into it, this will save time, money, and make quality. Another reason for the early release should be that the public should have a part in deciding what the game should have. This will hopefully allow for quality adjustments that people will like or at least feel that they had a part in. Thanks!

*Wonders how many would play the Alpha & treat it like a Full Release instead of be any help with its Development...*

Don't take his post so bad, I'm sure it comes from a place of genuine support for the devs. I think it's a by product of the early access phenomenon. It's now common place for fans to expect to be included in the development process through either early builds or just a really strong social media presence. The expectations are just too high anymore.
Getting early Feedback from Players can be a help, but it's very possible to seek it too soon. Starbound ran afoul of this...

They've stated already they do not want to do an alpha launch and will release it when they feel it is done. They have a vision of what they want to do and how good it must be (which is about the only reason we've been given for the setback and change of hands of the project etc. - a good reason imo but I understand if you don't feel that way). They want the game like they want it, but do listen to the expectations of the players (see: the T:OW suggestions thread on this very forum!)

6 month already passed. If there was a clue what's going on there...

PS: Funny, I found out I am not the one to notice that first. I wish I saw any news about Tow during this 6 month. Anyone has a link or info?

No solid links or info unfortunately. But they did just get a round of beta testers. Which really can only be for one thing....

Here is hoping that it goes a bit better this time. Last time they gathered up beta testers was just before the massive radio silence that was only broken when we were all informed someone really dropped the ball and they were scraping a large portion of the game due to it not being up to their quality.

Tl:Dr give it a couple months before you get worried.

Hopefully they'll be adding lore to Terraria. I like how they're taking a different approach!
Yeah, that would be interesting. For now all I got is that it would be more like tower defense. I love tower defenses when the maps possibilities for defending can be infinite.

We know that the "radio silence" and all of the shifting development work aimed at continuing the journey for Terraria: Otherworld has been frustrating for a lot of you. It isn’t a happy or easy call for us either – however, we feel strongly that we owe it to our community-

NO. No. Stop. Stop.

No.

Stop.

No.

Don't apologize.

This is the same song-and-dance gamers have seen from other developers who only turned around to :red:ing do it again.

If you understand long periods of silence are bad don't DO them. Plain and simple.

I don't care, WE don't care if you have nothing of "value" to report. Even if all you have to say is "progress is slow and nothing new to report, but we're still working on it", that's fine. Do that. We'd appreciate it.

Don't be sorry.

Be better.

We'll be behind you.

See I'm the opposite. I think it's a waste of the developers time to keep going "We're still working on it" because no one is going to be happy with just that message. They're gonna expect an actual update, with screenshots or something of substance to prove progress is being made. Such things take time to put together with any professionalism. That is time that won't be spent making any actual progress. I'd rather have the radio silence if it means they can get stuff done faster.

Indie games development would be a lot smoother if people could just control their fears and be patient. Too many people fixate on needing information as though we have a right to it. The internet has solidly been detrimental to the creative process in most artistic mediums.

Good Day, Terrarians-

We wanted to take a few moments to share some important news with you all in regards to the status of Terraria: Otherworld.

As you all know from when we first announced the game a good while back, Re-Logic’s focus has and always will be on delivering complete and quality game experiences to our fanbase. This means that we will not compromise game quality for speed to market or for any other reasons within our control. Our team had a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, as much as we hate to say it (and in spite of all of the reforms we tried last year) - the current state of the game is still equal parts far from that vision and well behind schedule.

As a result, we have made the decision to move on from having Engine Software continue development of Terraria: Otherworld. Re-Logic has possession of the game (code, art, sounds, etc.) as it exists today, and we have been examining the array of options available to us to get TOW to a place to where we can confidently deliver on the vision and expectations we all have for this game. After taking a good hard look at everything, we feel that a new and fresh start/direction is the only way Otherworld will ever reach its full potential at this point.

So, where does TOW head from here? The great news is that we already have a dedicated and passionate team ready to pick up the torch and continue the Otherworld journey! Based upon their really impressive work to-date with the Terraria re-write on Console/Mobile, coupled with an amazingly on-point proposal for completing Otherworld (after a thorough review of the game on their end), we have made the decision to bring Pipeworks on board as our new development partner for Terraria: Otherworld!

We know that the "radio silence" and all of the shifting development work aimed at continuing the journey for Terraria: Otherworld has been frustrating for a lot of you. It isn’t a happy or easy call for us either – however, we feel strongly that we owe it to our community and loyal customers to uphold the standards that both you and we expect and to focus on delivering the best possible games that we can for you all to play. The length of the silence was purely driven by "these things take time to occur and then set up" coupled with our desire to have an actual solution/path forward before just sharing the news about Engine.

Come whatever may, quality is simply not something we are willing to compromise on to make a quick buck. It may be painful in the short term, but our sincere hope is that it will pay off for everyone in the long term. Clearly, had we known this would be the scenario way back then, we would have held off on announcing the game until a later time - but such is game development. That said, we are really happy and confident with the new team and new plan - and cannot wait to get back on track.

Some quick details/questions that you may have:

  • Scope: We will be working with Pipeworks to examine the entire game, from top to bottom, to see how it fits with our high expectations and core vision for this project.
  • Timing: As we know more about the specifics of timing, etc and/or have fresh spoilers to share, we absolutely will - though expect the "quiet period" to go on just a bit longer while Pipeworks gets ramped up and we actually have new things to show.
  • Impact on other work: Pipeworks will staff up appropriately so that the Otherworld workload does not have any impact on the timing/quality of the Terraria 1 Console/Mobile/Switch launch
  • Other Changes: We will be doing a full refresh of all of the Otherworld public-facing locations (Website/Twitter/Facebook/etc.) - including a revamp of the logo itself  As these are completed, we will be sure to let you know so that you can check things out!

Thanks so much to you all for your amazing support of Terraria, Terraria: Otherworld, and our company. It is that support that drives us every day to do amazing things for you and we look forward to sharing more of what is to come very soon.

We are sure that you have a ton of questions, and we will answer what we can – but we will not delve into some areas out of either respect or confidence or the unknown. So we will ask your patience and forgiveness in advance there.

Thanks!
Wow looks amazing!!!!!!!

The big problem with Terraria other world is that we don't know :red: about it, there hasn't even been a new picture added in their twitter account since april 4th ! I get it the devs are focusing on making their game, but would it be that detrimental to give us ,something Like a picture or a news every month or so ?

My point is that we are kept in the dark, which mean we don't know the state the game is in, which really mean one thing, the game isn't ready yet, in fact it is so not ready, any news regarding the current state of the game would be so underwhelming there would be a backclash about it.

So in other words : 2017 TOW is not a thing, and the fear is TOW to stay a "project " is real.

If i am wrong I would be happy about it.

Honestly expecting the game to take less than 2-3 years to develop is a pipedream. 4 years was the average game's dev time before Kotick came along and tried to make every game into Madden.
