Sprites Changing textures depending on the season

I adore the idea of seasons, I think if they were to make 1.5 (does a bear :red: in the woods?), seasons should be one of the big additions.

Maybe defeating the pumpkin and frost moons could cause autumn and winter weather respectively, I think this would also beget the addition of Lepus/some other Easter themed boss/event for spring, and something for summer, maybe seasonal monoliths that alter the world's weather permenantly?

I don't see seasons actually doing much more for the game functionally than the current festive additions do, but then again, windy days exist mostly as an excuse to fly a kite.

you came up with a good idea with monoliths, but something tells me that technically it’s unlikely to work, as the texture will be replaced in many places

I think it’s easier to do it as in my version, and then further develop this idea

Where does a bear :red: in the forest?:D

This sounds great! However, I would recommend adding more reds and less green to autumn.
A really cool idea, maybe just for a day after Frost/Pumpkin Moon + Secret Seeds? I wouldn't like to have 3 months of the same season.
Better than the same one year round
I like this idea, but I also feel that adding snow on the ground may blur the lines between forest and tundra biomes.
From my understanding, and I may be wrong, the snow from winter is more akin to ecto mist than snow blocks.

Does anyone know if new ideas are still being looked at or if we can no longer hope that Red will accept my idea?
Red does look at the forums for ideas, but obviously he's got a :red: ton of ideas already on the list (seasons of some kind are probably already on there), and there's a bunch more being suggested every day so realistically he probably won't even see your post, still fun to spitball ideas though since it also helps modders get ideas.

1. I believe that they are frequently checking for new ideas. It may not be added in the next update or any given one afterward, but there is a chance. It is a fairly popular idea, after all.

2. I believe that Redigit has said before this post that it is on a wishlist of things that he wanted to add to the game. I may also be mistaking it for something else

On a side note, you should probably stop doing these infrequent comments. They could be considered necroposting. I don’t know TCF’s rules on that. Take this as you will.

I don’t know, maybe I could add flowers, but in general we can leave it as it is now. Let summer and spring be the same

I know you said to leave it, but Spring could be more flowers growing, chance for sunflowers to grow on grass (like how pumpkins grow in Halloween), higher chance for rain to occur, higher critter spawn rate, higher dye plants/critters spawn rate (and strange plants in hardmorde).

Edit to add: season change happens more frequently in The Constant / seeds mixed with it so the game plays more similar to Don't Starve's season cycle.

good idea

I also have a few ideas considering the topic:
One moonphase equals one season (so 8 in-game days)

Changes:
Only affect tiles above ground
Affected Areas:
Forest Biome
Evil Biomes
The Hallow
Biomes that are not - or just partly affected by season changes are:
Jungle
Tundra
Desert
Ocean
Mushroom biome

Spring:
The usual textures: so spring is the default
No real changes

Summer:
Forest grass turns to lime green
Evil grass, Hallow grass stays the same
Tree textures stay the same
Maybe a heatstroke feature if you're near campfires during the day -> Negates the healing effect / heatstroke feature during the day when in desert or jungle biomes
Increased enemy spawn rate -> +20%
High chance of thunderstorms -> +20%
Herbs grow +20% faster
The nights are a bit brighter than normal

Autumn:
Forest grass turns to orange
Evil grass, Hallow grass stays the same
Tree textures change to a autums style (orange leafes etc.)
Increased enemy spawn rate -> +10%
Low chance of thunderstorms -> -20%
Higher chance of rainy weather -> +20%
The nights are darker (like in the Constant seed)
The Halloween event naturally starts (So you're not dependent on the real life date or beating pumpkin moon)

Winter:
Forest grass gets a new texture (a bit snow)
Evil grass, Hallow grass also gets the new snow texture
Tree textures change to a winter style (with snow on the top, or no leafes at all)
Decreased enemy spawn rate -> -10%
No Thunderstorms
Blizzards replace Rain
The nights are darker (like in the Constant seed)
The Christmas event naturally starts (So you're not dependent on the real life date or beating frost moon)
Ice slimes replace regular slimes
Eskimo Zombies and Tundra critters start spawning in the Forest
Being outdoors while a blizzard gives the chilled debuff (gives the handwarmer finally a true use) / chilled debuff wehen in Tundra biome at all times
Deerclops can naturally spawn in the forrest now if the conditions are met

i think those chances could bring a fresh new feeling to vanilla terraria.
Maybe considering these changes being part of a secret seed combination with the constant seed.

I really hope the devs read this and like the idea haha

Btw. I'm new here, thank you for the attention :)

I especially liked the idea of infected biomes, I somehow didn't think about them :)

i dont love that idea it would be annoying to have effects that easy to get just depending on season

Increased enemy spawn rate -> +20%
i dont like the idea of enemy spawns increased depening on season
Ice slimes replace regular slimes
Eskimo Zombies and Tundra critters start spawning in the Forest
i feel like this should be somewhat rare
Deerclops can naturally spawn in the forrest now if the conditions are met
that is the only cold biome boss why make it forest too
No Thunderstorms
maybe just really lowered
Blizzards replace Rain
blizzards spawn only one new mob (ice golem) and boss according to wiki and it realy feels like it should be snow biome exclusive maybe it could snow instead of rain but just have rain effects

maybe small changes to npc behaviors like staying indoors more the traveling merchant being more likely to sell things depending on season same with painter

also a calender item could be added to tell what day it is

or in five kingdoms the length of a year was randomized that could be an interesting alternative
