NPCs & Enemies Compendium of Chaos IX: Menagerie of Mayhem (Bosses)

Casey Howley

Steampunker
Hello Terraria Community! My name is Casey, and welcome to my Compendium of Chaos!
You might be wondering about the title of this thread. You see, I've spent the better part of a month tinkering with a great deal of ideas, and putting everything in one thread would be a bad idea.
So, this is to be a series of posts, with the connected title: Compendium of Chaos.

Part 9: Menagerie of Madness details ideas for new bosses.
Now, does the game need more bosses? Not necessarily. But I like boss fight, so that's the big reason I made all of these.
The idea here was to "fill out the catalogue" by giving every biome at least two bosses. One pre-hardmode, and one hardmode.

Pre-Hardmode Bosses
This section contains ideas for pre-hardmode bosses for the biomes that don't yet have one.
Roughly intended area of progression is noted for each boss.

Cockatrice
Desert Boss, intended to be fought around the same time as King Slime and EoC
Inspired by the mythical creature of the same name, it uses abilities inspired by its mythological interpretations.
This boss is primarily single-phase. It's smaller than average (though still larger than the player), but quite mobile.
It can perform the following attacks:
  • Peck - The Cockatrice will attempt to peck at a play in close range.
  • Leap - The Cockatrice will leap through the air with its talons ready to strike.
  • Flail - The Cockatrice will jump into the air and attack wildly all around itself.
  • Stone Stare - The Cockatrice will "charge up" a petrifying stare before unleashing it. Players looking in its direction when it does so will be inflicted with the Stoned debuff.
The Cockatrice's Peck, Leap, and Flail attacks inflict the Poisoned debuff.
The Cockatrice becomes more aggressive as its health lowers, attacking more quickly in succession.
Once it drops to 10% of its maximum life, it begins exclusively using its Leap and Flail attacks.

Infested Charger
Glowing Mushroom Boss, intended to be fought after EoC, but before EoW/BoC.
Inspired by the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus (also known as Zombie-ant fungus), and the Antlion Charger enemy
The boss resembles a Giant Antlion Charger, but is even bigger, and with a blue and white color scheme.
It also features a mushroom sprout growing out of its back.
Phase 1:
During this phase, the Infested Charger behaves much like an Antlion Charger, attempting to ram the player repeatedly.
It will also occasionally attempt to toss fungal "boulders" at the player, which explode into clouds of damaging spores.

Phase 2:
The mushroom sprout will become notably larger, and the Charger will gain weak wings.
The Charger will be slower, but stronger in this phase, and gain new attacks.
The Charger will sometimes jump at the player, while the sprout will start spitting spores (similar to the Giant Fungi Bulb).

Hand of Cthulhu
Ocean Boss, intended to fought around the same time as Skeletron
Inspired by the Moon Lord's hands, and Master Hand/Crazy Hand from the Smash Bros. series.
The Hand of Cthulhu resembles the hands of the Moon Lord, but has a more fishy appearance.
It maintains the central eye, and is the right hand of whatever creature it is or was attached to.
It is attached to an arm, which extends down a significant distance to imply being attached to something, though it is actually not attached to anything.
The arm doesn't take down, only the hand itself. The hand takes less damage while performing attacks that hide its central eye.
This boss has two phases.

Phase 1:
The Hand can perform the following attacks:
  • Slam - The hand curls into a fist and attempts to slam down on the player.
  • Swat - The hand positions itself horizontally from the player and travels quickly across the screen. This attack can be performed in either direction.
  • Grab - The hand attempts to the grab the player. If it is successful, it slowly lifts them up before crushing them for significant damage.
    • The grab can be escaped by mashing the movement and attack buttons.
    • As an aside, I'm not sure if this one is mechanically feasible, so it can be skipped if it isn't.
  • Eye Laser - The hand's eye fires a laser similar to the Moon Lord's Phantasmal Deathray
  • Hand Gun - The hand will position iself horizontally the the left of the player and form into a gun shape, before shooting lasers at the player.
The Hand will typically only perform one attack at a time during this phase.

Phase 2:
After reaching 50% life, the Hand's eye will become bloodshot, and it will enter phase 2.
During this phase, the hand will behave more erratically, performing multiple attacks in sequence, or repeating a single attack multiple times in a row.

Expert Mode:
In Expert Mode, a second, left Hand accompanies the right Hand. The left Hand attacks alternatingly with the right Hand.
Both Hands share the same health bar.

Hardmode Bosses
This section contains ideas for hardmode bosses for the biomes that don't yet have one.
Roughly intended area of progression is noted for each boss.

The Swarm
Mechanical Boss, intended to be fought along with other mechanical bosses
Inspired by the Brain of Cthulhu
Included here for posterity (since it's on my list), as I know this one's been done dozens of times over.
The Swarm resembles the Brain of Cthulhu, but is instead visibly mechanical, made with metal sheets and with pipes pumping an unknown liquid throughout it.
Phase 1:
Phase one resembles the Brain of Cthulhu's first phase, however Probes replace the Creepers.

Phase 2:
After destroying all of Phase 1's Probes, the Swarm "unfolds" into a shape resembling a mosquito and beings directly attacking the player.
The Swarm can perform the following attacks:
  • Stab - The Swarm will attempt to stab the player with its proboscis
  • Lasers - The Swarm will fire lasers at the player from its eyes
  • Ram - The Swarm will attampt to the ram the player horizontally or vertically, similar to the Queen Bee
  • Probes - The Swarm will spawn additional probes to attack the player

Roc
Desert Boss, intended to be fought before the Mechanical Bosses
Inspired by the mythical creature of the same name, Roc begins scouring the deserts for prey after the spirits of light and dark are released into Terraria.
The Roc is a giant bird, with appearance similar to various birds of prey.
The Roc willy fly above the player during the fight, and can perform the following attacks:
  • Dive - The Roc will dive at the player with talons out, stopping when it hits the ground.
  • Wind Shear - The Roc will use its wings to fire blades of wind at the player.
  • Battle Cry - The Roc will shriek, calling Vultures or other bird-like minions to its aid.
  • Dust Devils - The Roc will flap its wings to create lingering dust devils.

Truffle Serpent
Glowing Mushroom Boss, intended to be fought after the Mechanical Bosses but before Plantera?
Inspired by the Truffle Worms that begin appearing in the Glowing Mushroom biome, the Truffle Serpent is their much larger cousin.
The Truffle Serpent resembles the Truffle Worm, as well as other worm bosses.
The Truffle Serpent functions similarly to other worm bosses, attempting to ram or encircle the player.
In addition, the Truffle Serpent will also perform the following attacks:
  • The Truffle Serpent will occasionally slow down and release spores from its body.
  • The Truffle Serpent will occasionally spawn giant truffle worms to attack the player (similar to the WoF's leeches)

Mantichimera
Underworld Boss, intended to be fought after Golem
Named for two mythical beasts, the Mantichimera is a deadly amalgamation residing in the depths of the Underworld.
The Mantichimera is a three-headed monstrosity, with the body of a lion, tail of a scorpion, and wings of a demon.
Its heads are a Lion, Goat, and Snake.
Phase 1:
During Phase 1, the Mantichimera will primarily stay grounded.
The Mantichimera can perform the following attacks:
  • Ram - The Mantichimera will attempt to ram the player.
  • Pounce - The Mantichimera will leap toward the player, attempting to hit them if airborne, or land on them if they are grounded.
  • Sting - The Mantichimera will attempt to sting the player with its tail. This attack inflicts Poisoned or Acid Venom.
  • Fire Breath - The Mantichimera's goat head will breath fire at the player.
Phase 2:
During Phase 2, the Mantichimera will being flying, and perform flying versions of its Ram, Sting, and Fire Breath attacks.

Ocram Reborn
Corruption Boss, intended to be fought after Plantera has been defeated
The iconic beast once plaguing Terraria has made its return, having been revitalized by the evil influence of the Corruption!
Yeah, I know it's been suggested multiple times too, but it seemed like a fun counterpart to the next boss in the list.
Phase 1:
During Phase 1, Ocram will primarily attempt to keep its distance from the player, circling them and firing Vile Spit and Cursed Flame projeciles.
After a set time, Ocram will charge the player directly.
Ocram will occasionally summon mini-Corruptor minions.

Phase 2:
After reaching 50% life, Ocram will change form and become significantly more aggressive.
During Phase 2, Ocram will charge more frequently and begin to fire lasers.
Ocram will occasionally create three-quarter rings of cursed flames around the player, which will being to close in quickly.
As Ocram's health lowers, it will summon additional rings in succession.

Expert Mode:
In Expert Mode, Ocram will summon more minions at once, and fire larger and quicker volleys of projectiles as its health lowers.

Flesh Hydra
Crimson Boss, intended to be fought after Plantera has been defeated
Inspired by the mythical creature of the same name, this fusion of flesh is hungry, desperately seeking its next meal. Put it down.
This boss has two phases.
Phase 1:
In this phase, the Flesh Hydra has five (5) heads attached to its body. Each head has a seperate health bar, and all five must be destroyed to proceedd to phase 2.
The body moves very little in this phase, except to maintain a set distance from the player.
The heads can perform the following attacks:
  • Lunge & Bite - The head extends toward the player and attempts to bite them.
  • Fireball - The head shoots 1-3 fireballs toward the targeted player. Inflicts the On Fire! or Hellfire debuff.
  • Ichor Spray - The head spits a spray of Ichor toward the player. Inflicts the Ichor debuff.
Only two of the Hydra's heads can attack at the same time.
As the Hydra's heads are destroyed, the remaining heads become more aggressive, attacking more frequently and and repeatedly.

Phase 2:
Once all of the Hydra's heads are destroyed, a giant mouth opens on the body, beginning phase 2.
During this phase, the body is much more mobile.
The body can perform the following attacks:
  • Ram - The body will rapidly move toward the player if they are horizontal to it.
  • Pounce - The body will leap toward the player if they are above it.
  • Ground Pound - The body will leap above the targeted player before crashing directly downward.
  • Spew - The mouth will spew globs of blood, ichor, and viscera at the targeted player.
The body will attack aggressively until it is defeated.

Expert Mode:
Phase 1:

The Hydra has two additional heads, for a total of seven (7)
More heads can attack at once
Fireball and Ichor Spray are larger and produce more projectiles
Phase 2:
The body's Spew attack can also fire globs of acid (which inflict the Acid Venom debuff)
The Ichor and Acid blobs from the Spew attack create puddle of the ground which deal damage when stepped in.

No Ocram. I didn't see the attacks but everything else looks cool.
