PC connection problems

i've been trying to play terraria with my gf since i bought her the game yesterday but we have constant connection problems no matter who hosts we can't connect to eachother. usually we just get 'lost connection' but sometimes i get stuck on my characters name while trying to join the game. even using the batch files in the terraria folder doesnt work and gets us booted off the server even after invite

How are you guys attempting to host, through direct IP or steam?

How far away are you guys from each other?

What's the speed of both your internet?

ok so update literally the stupidest thing was the problem, both our characters had the same name and that prevented us from joining each other. i dont know how that is a problem but it was but with differently named characters we have no problem playing together lol
