Playing Terraria on PC with a controller is impossible. It's impossible to access the settings. There is no button to open chat. You cannot use an item in the inventory. You have to move the item to the hotbar and then use it. You can't do quick actions where you easily move an item to a chest or to a merchant without clicking and dragging. The android version does everything perfectly. Just copy that. It's infinitely customizable and everything works seamlessly. The rise of handheld PCs will be left out because they can't play terraria in handheld mode. Heck, hire me to design it. I know exactly how it should be layed out and I know what makes for a good controller experience. Thank you

Hey @Kuppa_Joe, I'm sorry to hear your experience using a controller leaves to be desired. We're always open to feedback on how we could improve the experience for our players, so if you have notes they are more than welcome!

Having said that, I would like to weigh in on some of the things you've mentioned in order to improve your experience:
It's impossible to access the settings.
You can reach the Settings from the equipment menu, by scrolling all the way to the bottom.
You cannot use an item in the inventory. You have to move the item to the hotbar and then use it.
You can use items in your inventory by pressing the right thumbstick. This will move your focus into the world, where you can use/place items.
You can't do quick actions where you easily move an item to a chest or to a merchant without clicking and dragging.
You can use the Back/View button (depending on your controller type) to quickly transfer or sell stacks of items.

Wow I missed the settings because I'm used to the Android method. Why is the right thumbstick function not remappable? I would prefer it somewhere else, and I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. What back/view buttons? I pressed every button and nothing worked.
I have a state of the art modern controller mind you. You didn't mention being able to open chat? I'm ostrasized from my friendgroup when I play on the ROG Ally because I can't chat! Why would you choose the inferior system for the best selling platform? While making the mobile version flawless? Don't forget the major discrepency of customizability. On android you can, for example, map a function to rb+a or whatever combo you choose. Try playing android and pc with a controller and compare the perfection to the :red:show

Hello? Am I going to get a response please?

Kazzymodus avoided my question and then abandoned me so I'm asking again. How do I access chat with a controller? I have a handheld PC with touchscreen keyboard capability, but no way to access chat. Please help

Hi there @Kuppa_Joe I’ve combined your two threads into one, as we discourage duplicate threads. This one thread is enough, there’s no need to make more. :)

I don’t play with controller on PC, so I’m not sure what the answer is. Perhaps someone in the community may chime in, but in any case, I’d like to ask for you to have a bit more patience.

My apologies for the delayed response, yesterday was a busy day.

It is remappable, but it is - admittedly confusingly - bound to Quick-Mount under the Menu Controls. We're aware that these labels are not accurate, it's on our radar to address.
What back/view buttons? I pressed every button and nothing worked.
I don't know which button this is on the ROG Ally, but you can (re)bind this control under Auto Select in the Menu Controls.

Chat functionality is currently not supported on gamepad, unfortunately. If you have a touchscreen keyboard you should be able to use that, though (Enter opens chat).

The short answer is that these systems were developed independently: Terraria was originally developed for keyboard + mouse only and was given gamepad support later on. When Terraria was ported to mobile and console, the controls and UI were rebuild from the ground up with those platforms in mind.

We agree that PC Terraria's gamepad support could be improved, and like I said we are open to any and all feedback and suggestions on this point. :)

Ok I'll be more patient. It's just that Kazzymodus answered all but my most important question, then flew off to lala land.

Thank you for the reply. Sorry if I came off a bit angry. I just want to see my favorite game be the best it can be. My main suggestion, if it's possible, would be to move mobile's controller mapping over to pc. Then the game would be perfect.
