I tried and it looked absolutely horrendous. I don't think 4x4 pixels work with a 2x2 image. It just looks bland.

I have edited the derpicorn so the wings are lighter and the colored parts have colored edges instead of a constant gray:

That doesn't mean that yours aren't good. Yours still fit the aesthetic, and they look cool. If you did that all with a reference, I'm still impressed. Don't think that just because you think someone made something better than you, that you aren't good at that specific thing. I'm probably going to stop myself from going into full support mode, but yours are still good.
