Does Melee have any real downside?

Rangers-Take out enemies with your huge DPS before they even reach you. Boss battles rely on mobility

Mage- Demolish everything with huge DPS with limited mana. However potions+ mana flower makes the mage a powerhouse.

Summoner- Use minions to assist you in fighting. Hardest boss battles.

For mage, you don't even need mana flowers; I just have a celestial magnet equipped and have star statues hooked up to timers/pressure plates.
 
pff I tiresome to read people only focusing on DPS, dps here and there. when there are more stuff going on than just dps...
like life steal, back in 1.2.4, homming weapons, long range weapons (like terra blade or the newer ones), now melee has a weapon that go through blocks, no, melee doesn't have downside, the fact that melee has low dps is not a downside, adding more dps into melee would be gamebreaking...
 
Every melee weapon is too good with the Solar Armor. Following your logic, there should be a Phantasm class and armor type!

not all melee weapons are ranged
like horseman's, you'd have to be right in front of something to actually kill it, yoyos you can have a pretty absurd range with yoyo bag
if you use the terrarian, eh, thats pretty much the best thing to have in the game
