Weapons & Equip Early game craftable wooden boat mount for crossing bodies of water

Kirinin

Terrarian
One thing I keep hearing new players ask whenever they encounter a body of water in terraria is either "how do you swim?" or "do i need a boat to cross this" and it got me thinking, yeah why don't we have a proper way to cross water in this game. Sure we can get accessories later that let us swim but rarely are they ever used often you'll get wings before that so most people just fly over any water so these accessories like flippers basically never get used and so water gets largely ignored.

Solution? Early game craftable wooden boat just like in minecraft. Works just like their boats do. You either place it in the water or press the mount button when you're in the water and you can simple sail across the body of water. Quick, simple and kinda adds to the immersion. I don't know, the more I imagine it existing the cuter I think it is and the more I want it. Currently what we do is just jump into the water, hold our breaths and hope we make it out the otherside. Seems so primitive, surely we can do better.

Outside of the practicality and fun of it, just imagine what builders could do with a mount like that. Water worlds and biomes suddenly become much more interesting.

I'm not too sure about this one. Bodies of water in Terraria are never generally large enough to warrant a boat aside from the ocean, and even that really isn't big enough.
Water world's would be cool with it, but since they aren't a naturally occurring thing it would be extremely niche.

I'm on the fence with this one.

Some lakes are shaped such that passage from one side to the other is impossible withought, at worst, a hook or, at best, a way to swim. It would make sense for some sort of raft for these bodies. Maybe crafted from 30 wood?

Uh, no. But let's unpack this.
First, if you are asked this by a new player, say that you can bridge over, try to brave the waters and jump back out the other side or just turn around.

Forgive my quick diagnosis and correct me if I am wrong, but this seems like another example of '2d Minecraft' in a non-intended way. Why not I mean Minecraft is a block based sandbox game where you adventure and boats are how you get around in that one?! Everyone on this forum could write an entirely new 800 word rant on why they are not the same game.

As the idea stands, it is a solution to a problem that does not exist. If you mess up and drown at the bottom of a lake that is a mistake you made and you will try your best to not do it again.
The early game solution for water is building a bridge, be it out of platforms, solid blocks or even decorated there is no need for an early game 'solution' for water, so it does not make sense why boats or similar day 1 aquatic movement options should exist.

Im getting a minecraft vibe

My idea for this is a surfboard, works a bit like what you said

hell yeah, i wanna go on a proper fishing trip, not bob around in a pool floaty like a 5 year old. i'm all for immersion

platform bridges look HORRIBLE no matter what way you slice it. i refuse to use them unless i can't cross the water without drowning. and blocks are even worse imo
if you don't like boats just don't use 'em. the benefit would just be the quick-deploy (not having to spend time making a bridge), a con could be the boat being rather slow (normal walking spd, which is paltry as soon as you get hermes boots)

i like this alot, could have a bunch of designs too
my worlds are always full of ugly platforms across lakes and up hills so just pressing mount and having a lil boat would be very cool
i would totally use this for my mount slot early game since there arnt very many good mounts at that point in the game
i just remembered they do have a boat mount.. but it flies instead of floats..
you could have a pirate ship boat, a raft, a lil submarine that slowly moves underwater and emits light and a fishing boat that fires cannonballs at enemies to help you fish in peace

Both the Inner Tube and Water Walking Boots do the exact same thing but better while also not using up your mount slot. I can see this working as something you can make out of materials you can find at the very beginning of the game though.

Support! Having to wade across the bottom of ponds just to explore on your first day is annoying.

I feel like this would just be the Hardy Saddle but craftable, and also worse.

I just walk across the bottom.
this is a big brain move until u realize you can't get up the slope to the other side 😆
i've had several weird lake generations...

would be more immersive. Like it.
An upgrade which can also swim in lava would be nice too. This would allow new mods like water world.

Inner Tube and Water Walking Boots do the exact same
Inner Tube not 100% the same. It can also be useful under water. Boat would just be able to swim at the very top.

I liked the idea.
Even though I don't think it would be very useful, that doesn't make it any less cool.
It could function similarly to King Slime's mount, which floats in the water, but obviously without being able to jump.

And to add functionality it could grant more fishing power.

Mounts don’t need to be put in the mount slot to be used, you can use any mount by left clicking with it. The mount slot is basically just there to tell the game which mount to prioritize when you have multiple in your inventory and you hit the mount key.

I actually really like this idea. I’ve wanted a boat in the game for a long while.

I'm aware of that but from my experience it's more awkward to use a mount from your inventory than to have an inner tube in one of your vanity slots and switch it in.
I pretty much always use autopause though which might be why.

The boats would be like paper aeroplanes in that they could be put down and picked up while stacking in the inventory.

You could always use it from your hotbar in that case.
