Weapons & Equip Early Game Summoner Items - Whips, Sentries, Summons and Accessories

So I was thinking about the new slime whip thats going to be released in 1.4.5 and the idea came to me that they should add a corresponding sentry too for all those sentry only enthusiasts, aswell as some other additions.

I've got two ideas for a slime themed sentry, my first being somewhat similar to the lightning aura rod. Basically you place it down and it covers the ground near it in slime and slows all enemies that walk in it, while also damaging them. This could look like the slime is wrapping around their legs. Also it obviously would apply the slimed effect.

My second idea is a bit more unique, and also effective on flying enemies. So when you place the sentry down, it does nothing until you click again somewhere else in line of sight to the first sentry. Once the second part of the sentry is placed (it only takes one slot altogether), it creates a slimy tendril between the two that catches enemies like a spider web. For this sentry, it could lean to a more utility based item, and not do any damage but give the slimed effect on contact, then hold up to 10 enemies, in place for about 2 seconds, before relasing them.

Also, the new slimed effect is cool and all, but for summoners you cant make use of it until you get the imp staff post evil boss. This would pair nicely with my next suggestion, the flaming whip, made with iron bars, (potentially gold to make it a bit harder to get), chain and torches. This would make the slimed effect actually usable to summoners, and would make a cool dynamic where two of the early game whips compliment eachother with their effects. Also an early game minion that could also help with this could be a little fire spirit. You could make this with maybe a living wood wand, giving you the option to shimmer it into the finch staff or just combine it with torches and maybe stars to make a fire spirit wand.

Moving on from the slime and fire theme to an icy cold one, I believe i have another cool idea for a ice biome sentry that you can get while looking for flinxes early game. My idea involves an icicle sentry that can only be placed on the ceiling and its a bit complex so I'll try to explain as best I can.

When you place the sentry down, it snaps to the closest ceiling above it and begins to charge up an icicle. This icicle would charge up over 3-5 seconds, with multiple stages while it charges. The first it will do little damage and peirce twice, the second will do maybe 50% more damage peirce thrice, then the final stage will do 150% damage and peirce 4 times. Also, it came to me that it could be quite annoying if you are trying to get it to charge all the way up but an enemy makes it releases early, so maybe if you click on the sentry again it changes it so it only releases once fully charged, giving options to the player.

Also, I had the thought that it would most likely miss alot of shots on fast moving enemies like EoC, so maybe if you right clicked with the staff, instead of making a sentry that shoots one powerful icicle, it shoots a spread of icicles. This would behave in a similar matter, charging up over 3-5 seconds, but would not peirce. Instead, the first stage would charge 3 little icicles, the second makes 5, and the last makes 9. In my opinion this would be a cool addition to the game as it isnt some clone of the ballista staff and you actually need to change your arena with a little roof if you want to use it.

My final idea is an accessory post boss that gives the player 2 extra sentry slots, but one less minion slot and 20% less minion (or overall summon damage if deemed necessary for balancing). This could be made with items from the dryad, like purification powder and any type of flower seeds to make it post boss, in addition to fallen stars and called Nature's Blessing, a nod to her status affect. This accessory would be I believe the only accessory that has a negative alongside a greater positve and would change the way alot of summoners might play the game.

Anyway thats the end of my rant, thanks for reading my ideas if you made it this far and hopefully 1.4.5 isnt too close to releasing by now to implement atleast some of my ideas.

It’s late in my timezone so my response won’t be very detailed, but I think the second Slime sentry should be later in the game. It’s very cool, and honestly too cool and complex for its point in progression.

True, maybe the first idea could be used pre boss, then you could upgrade the weapon to the second idea after queen slime with the sparkly water balloons and crystal shards or something. Always cool if you can upgrade a weapon later down the road.

Okay so I can’t stop thinking about this bloody idea so I just need to write it all down. First, the icicle staff, it’s too complex for such an early game item, and too good. I was thinking how annoying it would be to get the fully charged shots and to make it optional to make it only shoot when fully charged, but I’m pretty sure everyone would use it like that anyway. So disregarding that feature would be better in my opinion anyway. Imagine fighting EoW and it sends a fully charged icicle right through, it would be a bit like that feeling when you get lucky enough to get a star to hit EoC or a skeletron hand. Anyway, I just felt like that would make it more viable as an early game weapon and not quite so op.

Also here’s some more polished ideas for the weapons I came up with.

1a. Everflowing Bucket of Slime (Sentry)

Recipe: 1x Bucket 25x Slime

How it works: When placed, the bucket starts leaking slime into the ground up to 8 blocks on each side but the slime cannot go uphill. When enemies walk through they are slowed 30% and given the slimed debuff, aswell as damaged by tendrils that whip/ grab their legs. The damage can only be done to a max of 5 enemies but status effects still apply.

Stats:
Damage: 6, hits every second
Crit chance: 0% (I think this is the standard for summons?)
No Knockback
Uses 7 Mana

1b. Slimomancy Staff (Sentry, interchangeable with the bucket of slime)

Explanation: With the Everflowing Bucket of Slime, it would probably be a bit hard to code and make look right, so here is an alternative idea for the slime sentry. Also this would be a bit of a joke item, perhaps hyping itself up with a cool tooltip just to make a puddle of slime.

Recipe: 1x Zombie arm, 25x slime, 15x wood

How it works: First off, as this is only obtainable after the first night at the least, it will be slightly better than the bucket version. When used, a small gravestone with a little slime on it, or the words “RIP Mr Squishy” or a dumb name for a slime (or just a regular grand marble grave with a gargoyle to make the weapon seem cooler than it is), appears on the ground, and brings a 10 tile radius puddle of slime with it out of the ground. It also slows enemies 30% and gives the slimed affect, and has a max count of 5 enemies it can do damage to at once.

Stats:
Damage: 9, hits every second
Crit chance: 0% (I think this is the standard for summons?)
No Knockback
Uses 8 Mana

Potential tooltip: Something like “Rule the dead of the forest and unleash their wrath upon the living!” Or maybe something a bit less cringey

2. Fire spirit staff (Summon)

Recipe: 1x Living wood Wand, 20x torches, 5x fallen stars (Maybe don’t include stars so that it is obtainable before the first night)

How it works:
The fire spirit hovers around the player when idle like fairies do, acting as a light source at similar strength to the shadow orb, but gets brighter the more there are of them. When they detect an enemy, they fly towards them and hover above it, dropping embers down onto the enemy, setting it ablaze.

Stats:
Damage: 7
Crit chance: 0%
No knockback
Uses 4 mana

3. Flaming Whip
Recipe: 8x Iron bars, 12x chain, 50x torches
How it works: pretty simple, just a flaming whip that looks similar in style to the flaming mace.

Stats:
Damage: 12
Crit chance: 0%
Use time: 30
Tag damage: 2 (low due to its effect and its easy to get)
Each consecutive attack the damage is reduced by 55%

4.Icicle staff (Sentry)
Recipe: 100x Ice block, 15x gold bar, 3x flinx fur (handle could be lined with the fur)

How it works: The sentry can only be placed on the ceiling and has two modes. You can choose from single fire, LMB, and scatter shot, RMB.

Mode 1, Single shot; When placed, the sentry begins to charge, and an icicle generates after about 1 second, this icicle does the base damage of the staff and does not pierce. After another 1.5 seconds, the icicle increases in size and now does 50% more damage and pierces twice (Hits two times). After another 2 seconds, the icicle gets bigger again and reaches its final and biggest size, now doing 100% more damage and piercing 4 enemies. The sentry will shoot the icicle directly down at speed whenever it detects an enemy below, no matter what stage the icicle is at.

Mode two, scatter shot: When placed, the sentry begins to charge, and three small icicles generate after about 1 second, and these do not pierce and do the base weapon damage. After 1.5 seconds, the number increases to 5, but they still do the same amount of damage. The final stage happens after 2 more seconds, where a total of 9 icicles are generated. The sentry will shoot the icicles in a shotgun like spread down at speed whenever it detects an enemy below, no matter what stage the icicles are at.

Stats:
Damage: 8
Crit chance: 0%
Attack speed: slow
Very weak knockback (increased to weak knockback on 2nd stage of single fire, and average on the 3rd)
Uses 10 mana
