Other Elf's Tear and the Blue Moon: A once-in-a-blue-moon level of peace

Nights in Terraria are harsh. We all know it. But what if they weren't? What if, for once, the Moon decided to bring some peace to our world? That's my idea, with the Elf's Tears and the Blue Moon!

In Hardmode, you may throw a Bloody Tear in the Shimmer to get an Elf's Tear! I felt like Hardmode is a good point in progression to get your hands on one of these.

"Sing a happy song!"

As you can see, the Elf's Tear may only be used once every week. This is to balance out the fact that this item pretty much makes the Night mostly harmless. Once Moon Lord is defeated, the item becomes usable every Night, as there is really nothing to fear anymore. This item can also be used to cancel the Blood Moon and Event Moons (Pumpkin and Frost, and any other holiday moons if Re-Logic adds more for some reason), but this may only be done by the same person who started the event (if it was started manually)

Upon use (or the start of the event), the message "The Blue Moon is rising...!" is displayed.

The Blue Moon

blue moon.png

The Blue Moon itself is an event based on the real occurrence of a Blue Moon, rare times where our Moon is closer to our planet, appearing blue and bright.

In Terraria, the Blue Moon is also very bright. It's not as bright as the Day, but it's about as bright as a Night with the Nightowl effect.

As it's brighter, some changes around the world occur aswell:

  • Townsfolk still walk around.
  • Spawn rates of hostile creatures in the Surface (be they linked to the Night or not) are massively decreased.
  • Fallen Stars only drop as an item about 66% of the time are slightly brighter.
  • Deathweeds do not glow.
  • Slimes still spawn, but only with a fifth of the usual spawn rates.
  • The Empress of Light deals 10% more damage.
Additionally, these changes that don't have to do with the brightness occur aswell:

  • A soothing remix of Eerie plays. This song would be called "Peaceful".
  • The Hallow still plays its Day theme.
  • The water worldwide has a bluer tint to it.
  • Fishing Power is increased. Not as much as the Blood Moon, but still noticeable
  • Some Townsfolk have new dialogue and could perhaps sell new stuff. I cannot come up with new lines or sold items tho.
  • Small chuckles of tiny blue elves can be heard on the Glowing Mushroom biome.

This event also has a chance of about 1% of taking place naturally.

I believe the Blue Moon would be a nice event to have. It could give the player more room to explore for the moment they jumped into Hardmode. They have the time to figure things out, discover the Hallow, maybe try seeing if anything else spawned around, make an arena for bigger threats, go play some Cookie Clicker, or just go fish for crates. Again, as this could get too comfortable, it is limited to being only usable once a week until there's no more reasons to use it.

I really like this. It'd add a nice way to explore the world without worry for a bit.
Oh, and this event has a 1 in a googolplex chance to start naturally
Jokes aside, I'd change this part though. That's such a low number that I don't think anyone would see it naturally

Hmm. A Blue Moon occurs about once every 3 years on average. So I think a more fair number would be like. One in a thousand nights? Still extremely rare, but not ludicrous. (Despite the fact it was a joke)

I like this idea. I would even remove some of the negative side effects, such as the damage increase for Empress of Light and Fallen Stars not dropping every time, and make it more likely. Maybe a 1% or 0.5% chance instead of 0.1%. That would still make it significantly more rare than any other event, but you'd still probably see one without having to play for a thousand in-game days.

I will consider the Fallen Stars and the increased chance. The Empress of Light damage is less of a negative side effect and more of a fun little detail that, since there's more light, she has more power. At least that's what I assume happens since she has normal powers during the night and hits hard during the day.

Then she should deal less damage on New Moons and more damage on Full Moons.

That'd be fun but in that case it should be multipliers of like 1%. Actually ykw scrap that part of the post altogether aswell. I will do these line things so people know it used to be a thing.

Sounds fun.

i think it would be fun if instead being a summon-only, it had a 1/40 chance (twice as rare as an eclipse) chance of occuring every night.

And also instead of shimmering a bloody tear it has a 2% chance to replace a fallen star during a blue moon. It's already a rare event, limited to once per week, and pre-hardmode is where you need it most, so no need to limit it to hardmode.

I have some dialogue ideas:

Guide:
(Appears after your 1st Bloodmoon)
"There're rumors of a lunar phase in which the monster rests, even them take breaks some times!"

(In Blue Moon Night)
"Since a long time I haven't a peaceful night like this"

Merchant (He have a discount)
"I'd scam you, but not this night, that would ruin the moment"

Demolitionist (He have a discount)
"For some reason, I don't want to blow up things to night, just relax"

Zoologist
(She doesn't transform during Blue Moon)
"I'm... I'm... I'm normal! I can't believe it! So, this is how it feels be human during a night, eh?"

Guns dealer (He have a discount)
"Shot things? Tonight? Nah, not this night, I'm gonna chill with... someone" (reference to Nurse)

Nurse (doesn't offer her healing service, she's resting)
"Is great when no one gets hurts during the night, I can sleep peacefully, being a Nurse is very busy, you know?"

Clothier (Sells "Werewolf vanity set", "Skeleton Shirt/Pants", "Swamp Thing Vanity set", etc. only after a Eclipse"
"When I was cursed, only in nights like this I was calm, the evil forces get weaker"

Party Girl (She gets angry) (Her thins gets more expensive)
"I hate this night, anyone want to have fun! Just chill. Ahhh"

Cyborg (just a reference)
"I'm reading post in the Terraria Forum! This night was suggested by Ambered Mienfoo!"

Steampunker (She doesn't care if a Blue Moon is occurring, she acts normally)

Santa Claus
"Ho ho ho! We are under the light of the Blue Moon, on nights like these I love to drink milk and eat cookies"

Goblin (He's worry about the Blue Moon) (Reforging gets 10% cheaper)
"Wait! Is this a Blue Moon!? Oh no, goblins theoretically gets angrier with this Moon Phase! Stay away from me! I'm dangerous!"
(Actuality, this isn't true)

Driad (Offer... I don't know, "things")
"Hmm, a Blue Moon... I didn't seen a Blue Moon since decades.
The Blue Moon weaken the Evil Forces when it raises... I don't know why "He" allow this phenomenal"

Dye Trader (trade an special Dye if you give him an Strange Plant)
"It's real. My parents told me about the Blue Moon, I didn't believe them before. Well, It seems like a normal Moon to me, wanna dye?"

Painter (sells Blue Moon Paint)
"The blue bright is beautiful, I'll try to replicate in paint, I'll give you some of it if you want to"

Stylist (Sells Moon Phase Hair Dye)
"When I was a kiddo, I received my scissors during this same Moon Phase"

Tavern Keeper (He doesn't care)

Witch Doctor (Gets angrier and his things gets expensive)
"My people don't like the Blue Moon, it's blasphemy to our god!" (Reference to The Golem)

Angler (disappears)

Pirate (His drunk)
"(Erupt onomatopoeia)"

Tax Collector (He's scare)
"Ghost! I saw ghost! They come for me! I don't want to give them any money!"

Princess (get a discount)
"My dad, he told me fairy stories when I was smaller. Hmm, I'm missing those days"

Wizard
"I don't need to keep an eye in the sky during the Blue Moon, "He" is sleeping, you know?"

Was just about to reply and say that. I honestly don't think it's a huge deal, but it is something to think about.

This is a really cool idea! I'd love to see more events in the game as well; an Elf NPC could also be a cool addition to this but Idk what they'd do nor spawn conditions.

I think a "Wandering Trader" role could be cool. They spawn in the Mushroom Biome during Blue Moons and sell special items. Specifically spawn in Glowing Mushroom biomes, and are far more likely to spawn if the Truffle lives in it.

This would be a good incentive to create a surface mushroom biome, in addition to the pylon.

and shroomite for rangers and maybe the shroom weapons and blue solution

The idea is really good, I would like to see it in the game

Love this idea, especially the post-ML change!
Full support!
Also, maybe it's compatible with lantern nights? Those are really cool.

I feel like Fairies should have a massive(500%?) spawn rate increase during this. Let them spawn on the surface, too.
