Game Mechanics Enchanted Weatherdial - A Way to Force Weather Events

Shilaila

Official Terrarian
The weather in terraria is quite precarious and random. Waiting for certain weather events such as windy days so you can get kites can be time consuming and boring, the duke fishron mount has a special ability where it can speed up while it is raining but it isn’t very reliable, the weather also causes other events like blizzards and sandstorms, increased fishing luck and rare enemies to spawn but it may not rain often, or maybe you simply just want to have a calm terraria day and stop it from being windy, rainy, or thundering. We have enchanted sun and moon dials to fast forward time so why not also a weatherdial to solve all these weather related problems.

Tooltip: Bend the skies to your will for one day per week

The enchanted weatherdial resembles a stormy metallic grey anemometer with rainy blue coloured cups and a dial in the centre coloured yellow like lightning. It can be obtained as a small percent chance from fishing in the ocean or in space during a thunderstorm. It has a week long cool down and to indicate it is ready to be used by the player to control the weather the blue cups and yellow dial will shine similar to the enchanted sun and moon dial. In the tooltip the “one day” part means 24 in game hours. The weather dial has four different states depending on the weather and the player can toggle between these different states when it is ready to be used. When it is toggled to a certain state (for example dry, wind, rain, or thunder) the weather will only stay in that state unless the dial is toggled to another state, the in game day ( 24 hours) ends, or the weatherdial gets destroyed by someone or something.
  • In its dry state there will be no wind or rain and the cups will spin at snail speed.

  • In its windy state it will become a windy day and all the effects of that event would happen such as NPCs changing their dialog, unique mobs and mob drops, windy day music etc. It will spin at moderate speed in this state.

  • In its rainy state it would become cloudier and rain will happen. The rain would also cause a blizzard in the snow biome, and in this state it will spin even faster.

  • In its thunderstorm state a thunderstorm would break out and the it will spin at lightning speed. I think being able to control thunderstorms and rain would make boss fights look even more dramatic. Thunderstorms would also increase the chances of a sand storm happening.

Depending on the weather the weatherdial will be stuck in either of these four states but the player is able to use it to toggle between the different weather states and it will stay in that weather state for the day.

*EDIT: Looking back at this post after I posted it a few weeks ago, I don't really feel like it fits terraria that much tbh, and am now not sure about something like this being implemented into the main game.

you should also be able to toggle sandstorms
Sandstorms aren’t caused by weather so I don’t think it would make sense for an enchanted weatherdial to be able to cause them occur, although something that could toggle sandstorms would be helpful.

This idea was inspired by an old similar suggestion about weatherdials but I thought it sound a bit OP so this weatherdial has a week long cooldown and has a use time of one ingame day (24hrs).

When the EWD is in its thunderstorm state and spinning at lightning speed the wind blows past 30mph and the rain becomes heavier, so the sandstorm wouldn’t instantly happen but the chances of it occurring would be a lot higher, and even more high if your in HM.

If the cups spin at different speeds depending on the weather state it is in, I think it would be cool if the pointer of the dial also moved around depending on the weather.

  • the dial could point up when it is dry
  • point to the right when it is windy
  • point down when it is rainy
  • point to the left when it is a thunderstorm

(some gif to show what I mean, took me a bit to learn how to make one because i'm new at GIMP)

I like the idea, but wouldn’t it make more sense to call it an Enchanted Weather Vane?
I just called it an enchanted weatherdial because it had a little dial on it and kept the moon-, sun- dial pattern , but enchanted weather vane doesn't sound like a bad alternative name as it would be more distinguishable from the other dials.

I don't like the idea of changing weather on the fly. I agree that waiting for weather can be boring and some way to influence it could be good, but just having direct control isn't a great idea.

Tooltip: Allows control of the weather for one day per week

  • When the weather is dry and it isn’t windy enough to become a windy day ( below 20mph) the cups will spin around at snail speed.

  • When it is a windy day ( 20mph) the cups will begin to spin at a moderate speed.

  • When it starts to rain the wind will stay at 20mph but light rain will also occur (not regular or heavy rain as that would cause a thunderstorm) and a blizzard would happen in the tundra, rain mobs would start spawning, etc. The rain music will also start to play and the morning rain music would start to play if it’s morning time. During this state the cups spin even faster.

  • When a thunderstorm happen the cups spin at lightning speed.

Depending on the weather the weatherdial will be stuck in either of these four states but when the player is able to use it they can toggle between the different weather states and it will stay in that weather state for the day.

I made another concept thingy for what it could look like, took me a bit to make because i'm not the best animator and it isnt buttery smooth either but its something. I'm going to try and update the text so it is more intuitive as well and maybe have a small poll on whether it should be called Enchanted Weathervane or Weatherdial.

The weatherdial works similarly to the other dials so if many weatherdials are in the world at once you wouldn't be able to have complete control of the weather for as long as you want and would still have to wait for a fixed week each time in order to use it for a day. If this still seems OP the it could be HM exclusive.
Enchanted Weather Vane
"The Skies Bend to your will"
I just changed the tooltip to that because it sounds cool.
