NPCs & Enemies For the Bestiary: Pre-Hardmode Enemies Spawn More Often In Hardmode (Compared To Now).

RubberCrowy

Official Terrarian
I want to suggest that, in hardmode, there's a better ratio between pre-hardmode and hardmode enemies.

While trying to complete my Bestiary, I've noticed that pre-hardmode enemies aren't spawning nearly often enough for reasonable completion, since I started grinding for the Bestiary in hardmode. (Note: This world I'm talking about is a Journey world.) For instance, my underground jungle was packed with Moss Hornets, but there was never many Hornets on screen at one time! I'd like to say it was 1 Hornet for every ~10 Moss Hornets.

What I want to suggest is for this ratio to be better. I don't think that pre-hardmode enemies should be abundant in hardmode, such as a 1:1 ratio, or (in other words) a 50%/50% split between pre-hardmode and hardmode. I want to suggest a ratio more like 2:3 (40% pre-hardmode/60% hardmode), or 1:3 (25% pre-hardmode/75% hardmode).

Warning: Frustration caused by not finding many skeletons in costumes below!

First, I try to fill my bestiary with the different Hornet varieties, and get an overabundance of Moss Hornets instead. Then, I try to fill my bestiary with the Giant Worm, but get an overabundance of Diggers instead! (I'm still working on the Giant Worm entry, too.) Now, I'm trying to get all the Halloween Skeleton variants, and I'm not even in the double-digits with any of them after, when did I start, an hour ago?

I just want to fill my bestiary, but because I didn't fill out everything pre-hardmode, and bestiary completion is per world, I have to either spend days grinding the pre-hardmode entries, or just cheat by editing my bestiary completion or setting my world back to pre-hardmode!

And here's the worst part: I'm in Journey mode. I have access to 10x spawn rates, infinite supplies in seconds, and I still can't fill my pre-hardmode entries within a reasonable time frame!

This should only be a JM 🎮 ability. Imagine trying to get a Medusa head 🐍 or something and being bombarded by Gladiators 🏛️. Having P-HM enemies spawn more often in HM would be extremely annoying 😫 in literally any case other than the one you are complaining about 🙄.

I've seen someone suggest that killing a HM enemy could give its pre-HM counterpart an entry (ie killing a Moss Hornet gives the Hornet entry.) That's probably the cleanest way to do this without spawning too many pre-HM equivalents.

I don't like this idea. Why get an entry for an enemy that you didn't kill?

Because you killed the same one with beefed up stats and a slightly different sprite.

Still a different enemy. What if a player wants a completely accurate bestiary? Will they just have to deal with it because some players are trying to complete the book 100%?

Just have this feature be toggleable in the Journal Master.

Then they farm the enemy in pre-Hardmode.

So we should inconvenience the player roe wanting accuracy? 10/10 game design, no notes.

Bestiary Completion gates the Universal Pylon. A simple change like this affects nothing. I can’t tell how a giant fish dropping a bubble gun is more realistic than this.

...are you high?

What does that have to do with anything?

Does inconveniencing players who want an accurate bestiary mean anything?

Terraria is an unrealistic game. I hardly see how a QoL change like this is any more impossible in-universe than most of the game.

No? The amount of people who would want a completed bestiary far outweighs the amount who would nitpick over this.

We're talking about making the player happy, not realism. Idk where you brought the bubble gun and :red: from.

Then create a solution that would appease both sides 🤝. Have this be a toggleable setting 🔧 or have this be exclusively for JM 🎯. If both sides have good arguments 💡, you should try to make a solution that solves both parties' complaints 🤲 instead of spitting on one side and favoring the other 🚫.

This exclusively affects the most carping of players.

(Please do not use these to me. I can't stop you from doing it to others, but I'd rather you not do it to me.)
A toggleable setting for a small nitpick seems like too much. At least from my perspective, both sides do not have good arguments.

I still don't think we should punish players for having an active bestiary. Lets just agree to disagree, I'm sick of this back-and-forth discussion

I don’t see how killing the hardmode reskins of pre-hardmode enemies giving both entries would make it less “accurate”. If you’ve (somehow) never killed a man eater but kill an angry trapper, you’ve essentially (and, fun fact, canonically in this specific case) killed both enemies.
If that legitimately bothers the player somehow that’s frankly an overreaction. Like two people would have an issue with this for every like 1000 people who are happy the bestiary is slightly less grindy. And those two people will be alright

The idea in the OP is a bit different, I’m not sure about it. I would need a bit more info to come up with an opinion. Would it replace some hardmode enemies’ spawns? Or would they spawn along side them, making a huge abundance of enemies?

Why not just... add an item that disables Hardmode enemy spawns in the area? Like how the Shadow Candle disables the enemy reduction effect of towns, there's a candle that makes enemy spawns ignore hardmode being active. That way, if you want to farm pre-hardmode enemies, you can just use that. Best of both worlds, 100% players get their bestiary entries, accuracy players get their accuracy.

Doesn't work on Hallow enemies or during invasions for obvious reasons.

That’s a good idea
Maybe there could also be a journey mode power that turns this on permanently

Isn't there a statue for the hornet? Wouldn't this help? Could see if all per hard mode enemies get a statue in hard mode, sold by an NPC depending on moon faze so you couldn't get all of them at once. As statue's cause the drop rates to decrease and the enemies are pre hard mode should me it a little easier. Though I still fine Nymph's and Tim enough in hard mode to not worry. So maybe statues of the more common/uncommon leaving the rare as is.

Though that would still inflate the kill count of enemies, not sure whether that would be a solution for HotAirBalloon

I suggest instead of more pre-HM enemies in HM, maximum the same amount pre-HM enemies as their counterpart for HM (e. g. hornet/moss hornet) to prevent that the mob cap is permanently fully reached. Or maybe create for all pre-HM/HM entity pairs, where the HM entity replaces the pre-HM entity, if there is not a dedicated statue already in the game.

That's what I'm saying!
