Items Forum For Disability Accessibility Suggestions!

Make noisy bosses optionally emit visual soundwaves
This is a cool idea and would work especially well for the Eye of Cthulhu's iconic "roar" noise. I have also added the suggestion and credited you in the paper :)

Maybe it's just me, and this may not be the place to talk about this, but I kind of feel uncomfortable using items like the Golden Shower and Master Baits because of their names being obvious NSFW jokes. It's a wee bit funny, but it gets very uncomfortable. When they added pooping in Terraria, I found it gross and extremely uncomfortable. Again, not sure if this is the place to mention those, but an option to disable these things would be, IMO, neat. three uses of the word uncomfortable in a row, yay

Also I guess death messages could be triggering for some people.
I made a suggestion in Game Mechanics - While gore setting is off, change item names of Golden Shower, Master Bait and enemy name Mourning Wood to something less NSFW resembling since that is not entirely related with accessibility...

This is absolutely valid. The relationship of language with accessibility is rather controversial at times, and I could argue that your suggestion falls under accessibility concerns, however I don't think most people share that perspective. You have been heard and thank you for sharing, but I think Glasia made the right call to put this as its own thread in the game suggestions forum.

What if someone spams the chat?
That's actually kind of the point in some ways! Having a delay in chat would give the player more time cognitively to process whether something is spam or useful rather than being overwhelmed by all the messages and missing important things because spam messages pushed them out too fast.

is there a subtitle mode for the game like minecraft? if not there should be, where all important sounds are signified some other way
My bad, I didn't know what you were talking about until this was pointed out by someone else. It's been a while, but I have now added you to the paper and credited you accordingly :)

Welcome! I made this thread ages ago with absolutely no idea how much involvement it would get. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and those who continue to contribute. Thank you developers for taking this seriously! Please note that I am still updating the Accessibility Suggestions paper (here). I will always update the paper even after 1.4.5 comes out (if I die I'll get my brother to do it lol), so please continue to make suggestions. Also don't be afraid to suggest things here that you're not 100% sure are accessibility related. This is a safe and welcoming community and either you were right and will be added to the paper, or someone will kindly help with or create a separate game suggestion thread.

Original Post:
Since the stress ball is accidentally an accessibility feature, could you make explicit accessibility items like a mount that automatically traverses terrain? I'm thinking of something mechanical that cannot jump but climbs up walls and maybe grapples across the holes in the corruption. Or possibly access to knockback accessories earlier on/ an option to turn knockback off in Journey mode without having to use God mode for straight-up invincibility so that people who struggle with platforming can build out their space as needed without the constant movement from enemy damage.

I want to clarify that weapon automation is a godsend for people with joint/ mobility issues. Here is an example of a thread from last year talking about this: Game Mechanics - Autoswing for accessibility reasons?. I suffer from chronic fatigue and brain fog at times where I can no longer play at all; I don't think it's possible to accommodate those things, but I want to see what we can come up with together to make the game more accessible in other areas!

I came across this thread that I want to bring renewed attention to for awareness: NPCs & Enemies - Recommendation: Change the name of "Spazmatism"
Another thread I found that is related to accessibility: Sprites - Arachnophobia Accessibility options.
A painting of or related to the disability pride flag would be so cool as a small form of inclusion and recognition <3
Or just put in an inhaler that gives buffs so I get to be cool in my favorite game when I can't be in real life ahahaha

I just wanted to start this channel of communication so more fellow disabled gamers can fall in love with my favorite game!! Please give ideas here, or be inspired to make your own forum! Accessibility is so important, and you would be surprised at how many accessibility features double as quality-of-life improvements and vice versa, so these things benefit everyone!

I have also done a comprehensive analysis on accessibility in Terraria with detailed suggestions here.

New Stuff:
I made a disability pride flag and piano :)

In the Works: A video on the accessibility suggestions paper. Though I keep having to update the script as I continue to receive amazing suggestions haha!
New new stuff: The video has been made, watch it here!!
The video is live!!! HERE!!!

Full support, I really like how much detail you went over here! Accessibility stuff is always nice :)

i love the idea and i think there should maybe be a mini team who makes sure the updates are disability friendly also there should be a dislexia front option and maybe easyer spelling option i dont have it but those lizzerd guys are hard to spell and if i ever had to i would copy past from wiki maybe same with those eye bosses

I don’t know if it has been mentioned already, but the Vortex Beater gun is so wildly loud and repetitive compared to almost everything else in the entire game that it actually causes a ton of discomfort for me. I know there’s already suggestions for lowering the volume of player sounds specifically but it contrasts every other player sound so much that adjusting it would make those sounds too hard to hear and detract from the experience. It would be fine if choosing not to use it solved everything, but I have friends who enjoy using the weapon and I don’t want to stop them from having fun with it.

in my last comment i suggested to add a dyslexia front option and better easyer spelling option and a team to make the game disability friendly but it wouldent let me post a new one so i had to edit now i think there should be a catagory disability for it curently this post is under items that kinda makes sense since it is partly about the stress ball but it would be better if there was a catagory for it

I play with sound off so I had no idea about this gun. I just gave it a go and oh my god it is a LOT. If you are a PC player, I can have a look into making an audio texture pack that is more pleasant and add it to the workshop; this of course doesn't help mobile and console players though. Others have complained about the drill noise, so there are some sounds that people really can't stand. What would be great would be a workshop for all platforms of just accessibility features like changing sounds of some weapons, different sprites to replace spiders for arachnophobia, different colored ores for colorblindness. For now, I have made a specific section in the paper called Noise Sensitivities under the Hearing category and included your suggestion and credited you.

Thanks, there are plenty of resource packs that make it quieter but they’re not a perfect solution as the sound effect is actually shared with other weapons that are less repetitive. There’s also some clunkiness with the resource pack menu that crop up when you have a ton of resource packs as there isn’t a way to quickly put resource packs at the top of the list, so you have to move it up one by one and scroll a little bit every time you move it (this is an uncommon issue that’s only caused by when you have dozens upon dozens of resource packs enabled like I do but I figured it was worth mentioning)

Yeah the forum UI can be a bit confusing. Basically if you make a comment and no one else posts after you, you cannot make a new comment- this is done to prevent spam. Once someone else comments, you can make a new comment. I have already mentioned fonts in the paper, but it is always good to see important suggestions being reinforced, so I will add your comment there and credit you :)
It would be fantastic to have an accessibility specific tag or even entire thread category. I think that's a brilliant idea that I hadn't even thought about; having easier access and better visibility on this topic would make a huge difference.

That is really good to know. I have only messed around with visual sprites so I have no idea what the audio side is like. It's annoying that even more 'self-help' type fixes are clunky.

thanks also the i agree about the ores that was actually on my list of things to post i had oriculum and admentite but in cave lighting i kept geting them confused im not colorblind or anything but they just looked so similar especially when there wernt both in view eventually i realized if you use nights edge if would glow pink but it was still way to easy to confuse

Here is a suggestion of fonts: Dyslexia friendly style guide - British Dyslexia Association.

Arial, [...] Comic Sans, [...] Verdana, Tahoma, Century Gothic, Trebuchet, Calibri, Open Sans
I added Bahnschrift (Win10+ font), Gill Sans and Franklin Gothic to compare to the Terraria font.
What is the best font here for dyslexia:

isent there one specifically for dislexia?

maybe somthing for color blind people that makes the lines clearer
