Quite an old debate, but one with a simple answer. Gastropods are slimes. What makes me say this? The royal gel makes them passive. The tooltip says 'Slimes become friendly', implying they are slimes. Plus, they drop gel

Tell that to the Gamepedia discussion on the page, and pretty much half the Terraria fanbase.

This is actually one of the most interesting and creative enemy designs in the game. The gastropod is probably meant to be a snail with a slime for a shell. If that’s indeed the LOVE the direction they took with that!

I don't know why they are considered a slime, but the bestiary does acknowledge that they are considered slimes.
