Hey, you're lucky that you found Terraria Forums and chose it over *cough* *cough* Steam- *cough* Guides !...
(I challenge you to find an actual tutorial that isn't like "How to open Terraria11!")
Anyway, now that you bought the game, you can start out by creating your own Character and World! <3

Step 1: Character Creation
Let's get to the important part first. You can choose a difficulty out of 4. Journey mode is like creative mode, so I don't recommend it. Classic is what you are usually going for, it's the default. If you feel like a masochist today, you can go for Mediumcore (drop items upon death) or Hardcore (delete character upon death, no respawning). But don't get me wrong, Mediumcore
isn't a harder slightly harder Classic mode. It is slightly easier Hardcore. Unless you bought the game to suffer for some reason, I don't recommend going for those two AT ALL. Trust me, you will die a lot. This isn't Minecraft, you can lose 50 hours of progress in mediumcore if you aren't careful. You can customize your character as you like, it doesn't matter and you can change it later using a wardrobe or an NPC called Stylist for haircuts.

Step 1: Creating your World
Now, here is where you can actually change the difficulty. Again, unless you chose Journey for your character, do not go for Journey. You will not be able to play that world with a normal character. Classic is the default, and that's what I recommend for not big gamers and those just looking for a chill playthrough. If you play with friends or want a challenge with better loot, go for Expert. It is much harder, but gives bosses new attacks and mechanics, and also treasure bags for all your friends who helped you with the boss! You can choose master too, but it is just more difficult, and almost no cool Master mode special stuff. Since it is your first playthrough and you haven't even played the game, why go for the hardest first? Well, it actually isn't the hardest, there are secret seeds. They make the game more unique and more difficult too, so just go for random seed.

Step 3: What do I do now???
Log in the world, use your axe to chop some trees, build a nice lil' house with wood you got, craft wood armor, kill some slimes, get some torches, etc. You can have a look at the Forums some more and search for a guide, as this was just a short introduction, so you don't accidentally create a Mediumcore character, rage quit because it isn't MC and Mediumcore can be painful sometimes, and never touch the game after. Another awesome source is the official Terraria Wiki - Terraria Wiki

There you can get progression tips, boss strategies, etc. But most importantly, have fun playing! :)
