Other Have a class selector in character creation settings

Terrarian
Hi this is my first post in here, I believe this is a better way to submit something other than twitter, so here is an idea I had:

I've been watching youtubers that make challenges on Terraria: Ranger only, Melee only, Summoner only, Mage only, etc.

I was wondering if there could be a small section in the character creator menu, like activating the hard and journey modes when creating your character but this time you'll get a new menu where you can select a challenge that would give your character the weakest starting weapon of each class and make it impossible to use another weapon or their damage is vastly reduced when you hold it.
Like how you start with a copper shortsword, but now you can start with a wand of sparkling and only use magic weapons without changing the loot of the world. Or maybe you can just like how the Don't Dig Up seed changed the loot.

Here's something quick I made for this idea and some challenges in mind:

Swords only, starts the same but can't use anything that's not a sword
Bows only, starts with a copper bow
Wands only, starts with a wand of sparkling
Minions only, starts with the bird summon
Fishing only, starts with a fishing pole and maybe a bit of low tier bait (maybe a net). You can only use weapons and tools taken from fishing
One hit, you can only take one hit and die
Flails only, you start with a mace
Guns only, you start with a blowpipe
Books only, you start with water bolt
Whips only, you start with the leather whip
Yoyos only, you start with a wooden yo-yo
Spears only, you start with a spear
Hardmode start (unlocked when you get the Hardmode achievement)
No NPCs, you can't interact with NPCs to get stuff or heal from the nurse, or use their weapons when you kill them
No crafting, your character simply can't craft
Boomerangs only, start with a wooden boomerang
Consumables only, you can only use throwable weapons and you start with knives (Ale tosser might fit in here)
Magic guns only, you start with the space gun
Ore only, you can only use ore weapons/armor, no enemy loot, except for the bars the mech bosses give you. Unless you can get the ore to spawn in the world instead of the bars with that charcter, and get ore via shimmering the bars in a normal playthrough.
Loot only, you can only use stuff from enemies, you start with a copper shortsword or a zombie arm.

I know this is a dumb idea and there are some that might not work unless there's a newly added low damage option when starting the game, like a new craftable book before water bolt, a sentry before OOA, a rocket launcher before hardmode or others.

You already can do this by just doing the challenge for your own

But yeah, why not?

The only one of these challenges that has any merit to being an option in character creation is 1 HP.

Every single other option is easily achievable on your own.

I think there shouldn't be that many...

Character Settings:
Melee Only (copper broadsword)
Ranged Only (copper bow)
Magic Only (amethyst staff)
Summoner Only (finch staff)
1 HP
No Mining

World Settings:
Double Evil
Hardmode
Endgame (everything is post-ML)
No Enemies

Yeah. Part of what makes those challenges more appealing is that they’re not directly enforced by the game

In a previous suggestion, I suggested Secret Characters, which I think is a much more feasible implementation than forced challenge worlds. What if other players join? With items that dont meet the challenge requirements? Do other items just not drop in the world or can you just not use them?

But anyways in response to the original post, I think if you actually tried a lot of these, you would quickly realize how small each of these individual item groups is. Several would either be near impossible, with large gaps in progression before you can get the next one, and you would not be able to beat the world with an underpowered weapon. I dont think many of these are realistically feasible to encourage players to try.

That being said, you always have to option of just doing it voluntarily instead of needing to be forced.

EDIT: I just realized he did initially suggest this be done at the character level. I still feel like my point on many of these being next to impossible stands, so perhaps more creative challenges, as I suggested in my post, would be better than just "you cant use this" or "you can only use this".

I disagree, I love boomerangs and the main reason I never got a boomerang only run started was because I could not find a wooden boomerang. This feature would have solved that problems.

What you're asking for here is starting equipment, not hard locking your characters to only be able to use boomerangs.

I like the idea of a hard lock too because it removes some use of the wiki to see if a weapon counts

The wiki has extremely arbitrary rules as to what weapons go into what category as the wiki was made by players and not developers (seriously, solar eruption is listed as a flail even though it has nothing in common with flails both ingame and irl).
a weapon “counting” or not should be up to the player

I can see this being most feasible as a journey mode setting

I approve ONLY starter kit idea, where you can get Wooden Bow / Wand of Sparking / Finch Staff instead of Copper shortsword.
