PC Help on initial corruption spreading (read description)

When the initial “v” corruption shape is created during hardmode, will it pass through gaps when it spawns?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by gaps. If you mean an area like a hellivator or a subway you've created that's supposed to create a large amount of space between blocks, anything within the "V" that is corruptible will be corrupted. After the V is created, you can use structures such as Hellivators and Subways to quarantine off areas from getting infected, or make them and then purify an area you don't want infected, but they won't be able to stop the initial "V" that's created after the WoF is killed.

So if you were you surround the corruption pre-hardmode in a non-corruptible block then enter hardmode, would the initial “v” pass through said blocks?

The initial "V" Spreads independently of any prexisting Corruption. It can be a coincidence for Corruption already existing to be in the path of the V, but the V otherwise creates a brand new patch of Corruption.

If you put non-corruptible blocks in the path of the V however, that would prevent the V from corrupting those blocks, but it would not block the V from forming.

If the V generates Hallow over the Jungle for example, anywhere there are mud blocks will not be hallowed, but the V will still impact any block in it's path that can be corrupted/hallowed. It would be a heavy task to replace that large of an area with non-corruptible blocks to prevent the V from occurring. It can't really be stopped from passing unless you could dedicate many hours to massively Terraforming the center 1/3rd of your World before Hardmode begins.

In short: Yes. You can't make areas safe until after the big 'V' happened. When the ancients are unleashed, the V will travel across the screen, jumping all the gaps and barriers that you might have made.

Adding to prior comments: The V overlays anything in it's path. The point of chopping up the world with suitable hellevators and tunnels is to contain the results of that, including the preexisting Corruption/Crimson. So for example, if you have a quarantine-standard hellevator (basically, at least 3 tiles wide plus lined with non-corruptable blocks) from surface to Underworld, the Hallow etc. on one side cannot spread to the other side. If you've quarantined the original Corruption area, then you at least know that patch of Corruption won't spread outward, but you still have the new infected areas to deal with. (And one of the original Corruption areas will likely be overlaid by the Hallow stripe, producing a shared area.)
