Mac Help with characters

I am currently playing on mac and i used to play terraria on windows steam build for mac. I noticed that all my characters were gone and i searched in the internet about it and found out that the location of player files has changed. some mod in terraria forums said it was in <User name>/My Games/Terraria and i went there i went to the players folder put all of the old characters there and still nothing. What am i doing wrong?

The only thing I can suggest is to make a fresh character, then search your mac for that characters name which should reveal the correct location and simply paste your old ones in. The best I could come up with.

If you are playing the most recent Open Beta Build 6, there was just a change to where the Save Folders are stored. You can get more info in the Open Beta Social Group (you'll need to join the group, it looks like you haven't yet) and specifically in Skiphs' post here: Open Beta Change Log
