How do I use the Portal Gun with a controller?

Do I have to use the keyboard? Or the mouse? (I don't even know how to use it with mouse/keyboard)

I just know that I tried every single button on my XBOX 360 controller, and with my current bindings, nothing changes the colour of the portal. The only way I can create a blue portal is through the Portal Gun Station (not very convenient, and kind of a pain to aim at different parts with a controller).
 
The interact button shoots one colour, the action button shoots the other. (that's R2 and circle on a PS3 controller, right trigger and B on an Xbox controller? Not sure)
